Key moments:
Cody Rhodes celebrates championship; Dustin Rhodes congratulates him
Cody opened Dynamite alongside his wife Brandi, celebrating his championship victory over Goldberg at All Out. He said that a weight had been lifted and thanked the fans for believing in him and having his back. Much of this year has been a step back, but he’s looking forward now to facing all challengers and proving himself day-in and day-out.
This brought out his brother Dustin, who won the Casino Battle Royale at All Out. They’ll face off with each other at the upcoming Dynamite Grand Slam on Sept. 27 in historic Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. Dustin said that it will be an honor to fight for the World Championship, and he’s going to do his best to win the belt. They embrace briefly…before Goldberg’s music hits.
Goldberg gets a chance…at a different championship
Goldberg said he didn’t want to spoil the party, but Cody has to know that he’s coming after the World Championship again as soon as he can. He said that Cody showed a lot of toughness and grit; attributes he didn’t think Cody had.
Tony Khan popped up on the big screen and said that Goldberg would have to wait for any sort of rematch. However, because he’s been so dominant over the past year, Khan would give him another kind of opportunity: Battle of the Belts is coming up in October, and AEW has to name its challenger for the UWA Universal Men’s Championship. So, at Grand Slam, Goldberg will face Roman Reigns for the chance to face UWA Champion Chris Jericho in October.
Khan books a big tag team main event: Goldberg and Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns and Dustin Rhodes
Ronda Rousey recovers from a vicious match; Cargill interrupts.
Rousey also showed up on Dynamite, sporting a bandaged midsection from her brutal “I Quit” match with Paige VanZant, where Rousey made VanZant quit after burying a barbed wire bat in her stomach. Rousey said that VanZant might just be the toughest b**** she’s ever faced, and she’s glad to finally be AEW Women’s Champion and to put VanZant behind her.
This brings out UWA Women’s Champion Jade Cargill, who says she was here tonight to celebrate her continued success as undefeated Universal Women’s Champion. However, she had to come out early after hearing Rousey say VanZant is the toughest. See, Cargill is that b**** and the AEW Women’s Championship still rightly belongs to her. Cargill eventually gets to the ring, and the two women get nose to nose. Neither wants to back down. Cargill shoves Rousey! Rousey responds with a right hook that knocks Cargill down. Rousey walks off, holding the AEW Women’s Championship, while Cargill recovers and glowers from the ring.
Cracks continue to widen in the Chosen Bros partnership?
We see footage of Jeff Cobb and Matt Riddle working out, with Cobb taking things seriously, while Riddle is practicing his parkour. Cobb tells Riddle that miscommunication cost them the tag team championships last week. Riddle promises that he’ll be the best communicator when they get their championship rematch.
Natural Selection speaks
Brian Cage is livid that the UPW’s Shinsuke Nakamura eliminated him from the Casino Battle Royale, costing him a shot at repeating his feat from last year. Cage vows to come after Nakamura and deliver pain.
Shelton Benjamin and Cedric Alexander continue their assertion that they want to regain the Tag Team Titles. The first time they won, they defeated the legendary Steiner Bros. And now they will need to go through two more legends, whether they call themselves the Outsiders, Diesel and Razor Ramon, Vinnie Vegas and Diamond Studd, or Chet Lemon and Starship Coyote. They challenged Public Enemy to a match this week.
What’s up with Alexa Bliss?
Beth Phoenix tore through backstage on Dynamite, looking for Alexa Bliss, who double crossed her against the Beautiful People at All Out. Eventually, she came upon a Barbershop Quartet that was there to sing a song. They sang “Beth’s too ugly for the Beautiful People” to the tune of “Take me out to the Ball Game” and gave Beth a note. She read the note, then ripped it up and hit one of the quartet with the Glam Slam before storming off.
Britt Baker and Mick Foley talk about fairness and dentistry
Foley asks Baker if he should think about getting implants…dental implants…she says his toothless grin is part of his charm. She asks him what she should do about Tay Melo cheating to get a win over her; Foley replies that she should just keep bugging Melo until she agrees to another match. It always worked for Mankind with the Rock!
Foley looks to the camera and says that he’s none too happy about Sammy Guevara climbing back in the ring at All Out to eliminate him. He talked with Tony Khan last week, in fact, and due to Guevara’s cheating ways, he just earned a title defense against Foley’s craziest persona — Cactus Jack!
The Apex attacks the Bloodline
As the Bloodline comes to the ring to talk, The Apex races out with weapons and beats them down until they get dragged off by security. Jarrett yells that he told Roman their feud wasn’t over. This is just the beginning.
Malenko celebrates
Dean Malenko celebrated his victory over Miro and Ken Shamrock by going to Universal Studios Orlando. Vignettes throughout Dynamite show Malenko cutting in line; knocking a kid’s ice cream cone out of his hand; and riding the new Jurassic Park roller coaster with a stoic expression.
Carlito opens up Rampage
Carlito came out to a big round of applause and talked about being excited to be here in AEW, where he looks to bring a little more international flavor to the proceedings
