WCW Monday Nitro episode 33 for 08.07.23
Live from the Reed Green Coliseum in Hattiesburg, Mississippi
Ring Announcer: Gary Michael Cappetta
Interviewer: SoCal Val
Referees: Tommy Young, Joey Marella and Aubrey Edwards
The nWo are in the ring with Hulk Hogan waving a U.S. Flag with his good arm. The other arm is still bandaged. He talks about attacking Bret Hart last week at the end of Nitro and declaring a flag match for the WCW Wild Card Title at Great American Bash. This draws out the Hart Foundation with Bret Hart saying Hogan isn’t going to trick the fans into rooting for him on pure false patriotism, the WCW crowds are smarter than that. Hogan doesn’t think so. “Apple pie, baseball, fake boobs, sushi, hell yeah.” He waves the flag and the crowd predictably pops. Hart just kind of shakes his head. Hogan then challenges Hart to face Tony Atlas tonight. Atlas looks stunned, but Hogan says he’s got this to make the nWo proud.
Segment Notes
* Shane McMahon is really curious to see how this shakes out. While Hogan is playing the heel and Hart the face, he certainly knows roles could reverse with a flag match at Great American Bash in the heart of the U.S. McMahon, unlike his dad, likes unpredictability sometimes in the booking.

Brian Pillman Sr. and Ricky Morton wrestle to a 15 minute time limit draw. They shake handles after and put each other over.
Segment Notes
* This was to get over the friendly rivalry developing between the Pillmans and the Rock ‘n Roll Express.
-------
Randy Savage is on the entrance stage with SoCal Val. How he was jumped by the Stud Stable last week is recapped. He’s more than happy to face Steve Austin for the belt at Great American Bash, but he’s itching to put it on the line tonight and challenges Stud Stable member, Davey Boy Smith. The Stable comes out and Austin knows what Savage is doing. Trying to drive a wedge between them, but it ain’t happening. Smith will take the belt from Savage tonight and then they'll just figure it out from there.

Mickie James and Madusa Micelli defeated Tessa Blanchard and Molly Holly by pinfall of James on Holly via MickDDT at 9:11.

Kurt Angle is on the interview stage with SoCal Val for rebuttal to Ultimate Warrior’s promo from last week. “It took three guys to pin Warrior in the Elimination Chamber, but I’m the one he chose to go after. Supposedly, because I’m the one who claims to have intelligence, integrity and intensity; but don’t. The Warrior loses and cries about it. He says he adheres to the three Ws of Warrior, Warrior, Warrior. Well, I won a gold medal with a broken freankin’ neck and I believe in Kurt Angle, Kurt Angle, Kurt Angle. It’s true. It’s damn true.”
Segment Notes
* Angle will play a tweener here as there are certainly fans who siding with him over the crazed Ultimate Warrior.

“Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig with Col. Robert Fuller defeated “The Rocket” Owen Hart by pinfall at 13:40. Hart was up on the top rope and Orndorff came out to cause a distraction, so Fuller could pull Hart’s leg to crotch him on the top turnbuckle. Jim Neidhart comes out to scare off Orndorff. Hennig gets a superplex, but pulls Hart up two, wanting to win with the PerfectPlex. Hart suckers Hennig into a small package, but their near the ropes and Fuller pushes them over so Curt can steal the victory.
-----
Pre-taped promo shows Hugh Hefner surrounded by the Nitro Girls. He’s going to announce the WCW woman who will be posing for Playboy and reveal her cover at the Queen of the Ring Tournament. He wanted a woman who was not only sexy, but strong, tough and confident; which are all traits Hefner thinks are sexy as hell. He wanted a total package gal and he feels they found it. He knows Playboy is known for cheesecake, but this lady certainly isn’t soft.

Bret “The Hitman” Hart defeated “Mr. nWo” Tony Atlas by submission via sharpshooter at 5:55. Atlas comes out alone and keeps looking around for members of the nWo. Hart doesn’t have much trouble with him.
Segment Notes
* Continuing the storyline of Atlas on his way out of the nWo.
-----
Eddie Guerrero is on the interview stage with SoCal Val for a rebuttal to Jake “The Snake” Roberts. “Jake Roberts says I’m just playing at lying, cheating and stealing. Come down to the barrio with me, esse, and see how long you last. You talk about being pure evil and that’s all you are is talk and sneak attacks. You took me out of the Elimination Chamber just to cause chaos, just to have something to do. Well, if you’re bored, face me at the Great American Bash, homes, and we’ll see who the real dirtiest player in WCW is.”
-----
“Stunning” Steve Austin with Col. Robert Fuller defeated Tracy Smothers by submission via Rattlesnake Clutch at 4:58. Austin cuts a quick promo after on Randy Savage. If Davey Boy Smith doesn’t get the job done tonight, Austin will do it at Great American Bash.
Segment Notes
* Creative thought Austin needed something to do on the program.

“National Treasure” Nick Aldis defeated Rick Martel in the second match of their best of seven series for the WCW U.S. Title. The score is 1-1. During the match the Nitro Girls came out and started doing a strip tease around ringside to distract Martel. He turns around into a dropkick by Aldis, who then finishes with the Treasure Chest at 7:21. Commentators mention how turnabout is fair play as Aldis was duped last week by Madusa Micelli dressed as Mickie James, leading to Martel winning with a schoolboy rollup.

Shane McMahon is out on the entrance stage with Dusty Rhodes and Magnum TA. Steve Blackman is there with security. McMahon says he’s allowing Rhodes and Magnum to settle their differences at Great American Bash in an unsanctioned bout. A first blood I Quit match. You can’t quit until you bleed first, and the match will only stop when one of the bloodied combatants says they quit. And because it’s unsanctioned, Blackman will be the special guest referee. Magnum says he wants to sign the contract in Dusty’s blood, but I guess this pen will do. He signs the contract. Rhodes knows he’s going to bleed, but also knows he will never say I Quit. He signs. They stare down and Blackman gets in between them to keep the peace.

The WCW Trios Titles match ends in a no contest between the nWo (Taya Valkyrie, Eli Drake and Mike Bennett) with Maria Kannellis-Bennett vs. The Jive Soul Bros (Will Hobbs, Odyssey Jones and Ember Moon) with Dr. of Style, Slick at 12:43. Bennett is lined up for the Black Out (Hobbs spinebuster followed by a Jones splash), but Drake and Valkyrie drag him out of the ring and Jones misses the splash. They go to walk out, but the Hart Foundation runs out and tries to force them back into the ring. They fight and the Jive Soul Bros rush out to take part. We go to break with everybody fighting.

Order is restored and Shane McMahon announces a triple threat tag match for the WCW Trios Titles on the next Nitro. Same two teams as tonight, plus Natalya Neidhart with Keith and Bruce Hart.
-----
“Macho Man” Randy Savage successfully defended the WCW World Heavyweight Title against Davey Boy Smith, winning with the flying elbow smash at 14:04. The rest of the Stud Stable run out after to attack Savage, but he grabs the title belt and high tails it through the crowd. The last shot is Savage holding the title up high over his head with the fans around him.
