AEW Dynamite
July 5, 2023
The show starts with a tribute to America, and then Cody Rhodes comes to the ring, dressed in full patriotic ring gear. He talks about his journey over the past year and a half in AEW, from overcoming Malakai Black, to fulfilling his boyhood dream of being World Champion, and then Goldberg taking it away from him; then, finally, the Young Bucks turning on him and Kenny Omega coming in to cheat and beat him again.
But the American Nightmare won’t be held back. He may be alone — aside from his brother — but he vows to climb back to the top of the mountain.
This brings out AEW World Champion, Goldberg. He says he’s starting to admire Cody’s confidence, but it doesn’t change the fact that Goldberg’s entire goal in coming to AEW was to end Cody’s reign, which he accomplished. Now he has another goal — rid AEW of Cody Rhodes altogether. So he has a proposal - “On September 9, AEW will be live in Philadelphia for All Out. Cody Rhodes vs. Bill Goldberg. I’ll put my title on the line against your career.” Cody immediately accepts, but Goldberg continues - “Oh, it’s not that easy. If you want your shot, you’ll need to stay undefeated between now and then. And, furthermore — if anyone beats you before then, they’ll inherit your title shot. And your career will still be on the line. If Bill Goldberg walks out of All Out as Champion, Cody Rhodes’ career is over.” He walks to the back, as Eddie Edwards’ music hits. Edwards says he wants to be the first challenger, and wants Cody’s shot at the title. Rhodes pulls off his jacket and waves Edwards to the ring.
Match 1 - Cody Rhodes (14-4) vs. Eddie Edwards (2-3)
Rhodes wins with the CrossRhodes at 5:29. After the match, Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks emerge from the crowd and attack Rhodes. Omega hits the One Winged Angel and grabs a mic. He tells Cody that their feud isn’t over. He deserves the shot against Goldberg, and he’s going to take it in two weeks at Fight for the Fallen, when Omega faces Rhodes for the second time.
—
Raven is backstage in the boiler room. He says he’s always been comfortable in these surroundings. They help him think. Last week, Bray Wyatt and Malakai Black offered him a spot in the Wyatt Family. Raven says he works better as a lone wolf, but will think about the offer.
—
Match 2 - Brandi Rhodes (5-9) vs. Tay Melo (11-4)
Melo wins with the Tayogoshi (Utsuri goshi to swinging side slam) at 4:29. She promises to win the TBS Championship.
—
The Bloodline is out to the ring next. Roman Reigns talks about last week’s debut, where he beat JBL, and the coward Jeff Jarrett responded by hitting him over the head with a guitar. The Bloodline doesn’t take things like that lying down. He tells Jarrett that, if he wanted a war, he may just get what he’s asking for. Tonight, Solo Sikoa is going to teach Shawn Spears a lesson.
—
Match 3 - The Usos (0-0) vs. The Butcher and the Blade (3-8) w/ The Bunny
The Usos get the win over the re-debuting Butcher and Blade after hitting the 1D at 4:28.
—
Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows come out next. Anderson grabs the mic and asks the guys in the back to replay “Doc”’s win over Jeff Cobb last week, as the crowd boos his rampant cheating.
Anderson - “How quickly the turn tables! Two weeks ago, all o’ y’all were cheering the debut of the OC, my ‘Good Brother’ and I, here in All Elite Wrestling. But now that we’re here and ready to dethrone the self-proclaimed Chosen Bros, y’all want to boo us? Frankly, we don’t much care whether you like us or not. We’re here to prove, yet again, why we are the best tag team in the world. See you at Fight for the Fallen, Matt and Jeff.”
—
Match 4 - Sabu (1-0) vs. Kofi Kingston (3-2)
Sabu gets the win after a fast-paced, 15-minute match with a moonsault. They shake hands after the match.
—
Universal (UWA) Women’s Champion, and AEW’s own, Jade Cargill comes out next, holding the belt. “Yes, I am that b*tch. I’m fending off women here in AEW — Bianca Belair, your time is coming soon — and women across the world. While AEW is my home, and I plan to retake the AEW Women’s Championship that I never lost, you’re all going to be deprived of my awesomeness for a little while as I turn my attention to one Charlotte Flair in WCW. Charlotte, I know you’re a legend in this business already. But I’m a Legend-in-the-making. I am the present and future of women’s wrestling, and you’re already over the hill. I’ll see you at Phoenix Rising later this month.”
—
Match 5 - Miro (1-0) vs. Marko Stunt (0-7)
Miro makes quick work of the undersized Stunt, locking in The Accolade for the win at 2:18. When he didn’t immediately let go, Ken Shamrock’s music hit, and Miro let go and beckoned Shamrock into the ring.
They stand nose to nose before Shamrock asks for a mic. “I’ve seen your kind before, Miro. You’re big. You’re a bad-ass. People love you for some crazy reason. But you’re always just a step away from taking things too far. So why don’t you step in the ring with someone your own size. With someone who’s just about as crazy as you are.”
Miro thinks about it for a moment, then gets a big smile on his face and extends his hand. They shake hands and exit the ring separately.
—
Jeff Jarrett gives Shawn Spears a pep talk. He says they need to show the Bloodline who is the boss in AEW, and it starts with Spears tonight.
—
Main Event - Solo Sikoa (0-0) w/ Roman Reigns vs. Shawn Spears (11-5) w/ Jeff Jarrett
Spears and Sikoa put on a great match, but it comes to an end when Jarrett pulled the ref out of the ring at 14 minutes and slapped him. This led to Reigns attacking Jarrett and the remaining members of their stables to run out. The show ends with the Bloodline and the Apex brawling.
Rampage -
Sammy Guevara is the first out to the ring, with his TNT Championship and Tay Melo. He talks about Hook’s words last week on Rampage, that he wants a shot at the newly rechristened TNT Championship. The problem, Guevara says, is that Hook just doesn’t deserve the shot.
Hook comes out next and talks about how he worked hard last year to both make a name for himself and also make the FTW Championship mean something. “You’re right, the FTW Championship was something of a vanity title for my dad. But I didn’t treat it like that. I made it into a big deal; I made the title into something that others would want. Now I’m going to take the TNT Championship straight back from you and make it into a desirable championship.” Clearly, he added, Guevara is scared of giving him another shot.
In the ring, Tay Melo “holds back” an enraged Sammy from rushing down to Hook. Sammy tells Hook that he’s on, next week, provided that Hook survives tonight’s match against Konnan.
—
Match 1 - Big E (7-2) vs. Jake Hager (11-6)
Big E wins with the Big Ending at 9:58. After the match, he challenges Brian Cage. He wants the All-Atlantic Championship.
—
Kevin Nash and Scott Hall talk backstage about legacies. They sent the Steiner Bros. packing, but couldn’t quite get the job done against the Chosen Bros. The Outsiders are cooking something up. And it’ll be Too Sweet.
—
Match 2 - The Bunny (0-0) w/ The Butcher and the Blade vs. Serena Deeb (9-6)
The Bunny wins with a surprise roll-up at 8:19.
After the match, Ronda Rousey comes out. She lays The Bunny out with a punch and tosses Deeb from the ring. The Butcher and the Blade think about confronting Rousey, but decide to just pull the Bunny from the ring and walk off as Rousey grabs a mic.
“I was sitting at home and feeling down — I’ll admit it. When you get slapped, it can take a minute to get back up. But I’m back now. And, Paige, we’ve got some unfinished business to take care of. I’m coming for the AEW Women’s Championship. Your days are numbered.”
—
Main Event - Hook (18-4) vs. Konnan (2-1) w/ LAX
Homicide and Hernandez try helping Konnan defeat Hook, but eventually get banished to the back. Hook gets the win at 10:48 with the REDRUM.
After the match, Tony Khan comes to the stage and calls Sammy Guevara out. Khan announces that the TNT Championship match will be next week…and it’ll be a ladder match! Guevara doesn’t look pleased as we go off the air.
