AEW Dynamite
June 28, 2023
Dynamite is live this week, back in Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, after last week’s Road Rager event that saw the debut of both The OC — who became the number 1 contenders to the tag team championships — and the Uso Brothers. Sammy Guevara also became FTW Champion, as he continues to build his resume. And Goldberg defended the AEW Championship against Ken Shamrock — getting his win back after their meeting in a different promotion last year. A brief intro video recaps the action before we pan across the crowd…and get the entrance music for The Apex, bringing out the boos.
Jeff Jarrett, JBL, Wardlow and Shawn Spears walk to the ring, and all of them look unhappy. JBL grabs the mic and tells everyone to shut up, which makes them book louder. Jarrett gets the mic next, and says that last week’s Dynamite and Rampage were two of the biggest shows in AEW history, barring a glaring omission — The Apex was nowhere to be seen. Now, how can you have a huge show in AEW without its number 1 faction, and without the first champion in company history?
He is cut off by some new music, as the words “The Bloodline” appear on the screen, and Roman Reigns, Jimmy & Jey Uso, and Solo Sikoa walk out to a big pop. Reigns has the mic. He tells the crowd that he knows the Bloodline has had a love-hate relationship with the crowd in the past, but he hopes to get off to a fresh start in AEW. The Anoi’a Family is here, and expects to win championships. But they’re going to do things the right way. And that starts by getting the nincompoops in the ring to shut the hell up.
JBL gets mad and grabs the mic from Jarrett. He wants Reigns to back up his talk in the ring. Reigns replies, “tonight?” JBL nods, a little less enthusiastically. Reigns - “You’re on. Roman Reigns vs. John Bradshaw Layfield.” and he smiles. JBL looks a little worried as the Bloodline goes to the back.

Match 1 - Rob Van Dam (4-0) vs. Xavier Woods (2-2)
RVD and Woods have a great, athletic, back-and-forth match. Woods gets the upset win with the “Backwoods” small package finisher after 12 minutes.
—
Paige VanZant gets a nice ovation from the Jacksonville fans. The AEW Women’s Champion said she was confident going into her match against Madison Rayne, but she’ll never overlook an opponent, and she’ll never back down.
—
Match 2 - The Outsiders (6-3) vs. Los Parks (5-9)
Hall pins LA Park after an Outsiders Edge at 7 minutes.

Sammy Guevara comes to the ring with Tay Melo. She’s carrying a duffel bag, while he’s wheeling out a trash can, with the FTW Championship on his shoulder. They get to the ring, and he slides in, leaving the can on the outside.
“It’s about time that the Spanish God gets the recognition he deserves. I am now a champion in AEW, and on my way to the top. The only problem is that this belt is ugly as sin and belongs in the trash. The FTW belt is a vanity belt meant to stoke one man’s ego, and it was a gift to his son. With approval from Tony Khan, the FTW belt is going into the trash.” He makes a show of tossing it in the trash. “I’d like to introduce you to the brand new TNT Championship!” Melo opens the duffel bag and presents the TNT Championship to Guevara. He kisses it and lifts it high, then makes out with Melo.
—
Match 3 - Eric Young (1-1) vs. Raven (6-7)
Raven gets the win with the Evenflow DDT at 8:19.
The lights flickered, and Bray Wyatt appeared on the screen. “Raven. It’s time for you to be a part of something bigger. The Wyatt family is expanding. It’s time to put your differences with my associate, Malakai Black, behind you.” Raven shakes his head and walks up the ramp.

AEW World Heavyweight Champion Goldberg comes to the ring next, but doesn’t get too far before Cody Rhodes’ music hits.
Rhodes says that enough time has passed — he’s ready for his rematch, and wants to end Goldberg’s already too-long reign in AEW. Goldberg starts laughing and says he thought that Cody wouldn’t get another shot, after losing in the six-man tag match to the New Day two months ago. And, besides — didn’t Rhodes just lose a week ago to Omega?
Rhodes talked about last week, and said he and Omega have unfinished business. Goldberg - “I’d say you do” with a smile, as the Young Bucks and Omega come from behind and attack Cody. The Bucks hit the BTE Trigger on Rhodes, before Dustin Rhodes runs out from the back with a chair, and the Elite scatters. Dustin checks on his brother, then grabs a mic and says he wants to fight one of the Elite right now. He doesn’t care who.
—
Match 4 - Dustin Rhodes (1-4) vs. Matt Jackson (2-0)
Rhodes was fired up and pulled off the win with the Curtain Call (Lifting Falling inverted DDT) after 7 minutes. The rest of the members of the Elite were banned to the back after trying to interfere in the match.

Special announcement from Tony Khan, on the stage: Fight for the Fallen is coming up again, on July 19 and 21. In a follow-up to last year’s tournament for the All-Atlantic Championship, Fight for the Fallen will see the first round of a tournament for a new championship: the TBS Championship, a second women’s title. He praises the female talent and says that the division is just getting more packed with the addition of a new wrestler: Dr. Britt Baker!
Baker comes out briefly and tells Tony he forgot part of her title — “D.M.D.” — and the crowd already knew what to say. She says she’ll be in action this Friday at Rampage, teaming with Alexa Bliss against the dastardly Beautiful People.
—
Match 5 - Willow Nightingale (4-3) vs. Velvet Sky (1-7)
Nightingale gets the win with the Dangerous Babe Bomb (gutwrench powerbomb) at 6:49.
—
Jarrett gives JBL a pep talk backstage before his match. He says that Reigns is no longer the young punk they could push around back in WWE. JBL says he knows what he’s doing. He’s going to shut Reigns down now and chase them out of AEW before the Bloodline gets going. Jarrett nods his approval.
—
Main Event - Roman Reigns (0-0) vs. JBL (4-8)
JBL gives a great effort, but Reigns gets the clean win with a Superman Punch at 9:38. Both factions surrounded the ring, but nobody tried anything. During the match.
Afterward, Reigns celebrated on the turnbuckle. As he got down, he turned into a guitar to the head by Jeff Jarrett. The Apex then dragged JBL out of the ring and quickly went up the ramp, as the Bloodline looked on from checking on Reigns.
Rampage
Intro - Matt Riddle and Jeff Cobb come to the ring and celebrate their title defense over the Outsiders. He offers Cobb a champagne toast. He declines.
They talk up the new number one contenders, the OC, and Riddle remarks that Cobb is facing Gallows tonight. He asks Cobb what he’s going to do tonight. He replied that he’s going to give Gallows a Tour of the Islands.
—
Match 1 - Alexa Bliss & Britt Baker vs. Madison Rayne & Angelina Love w/ Velvet Sky
Baker got the pinfall after a Fisherman’s Neckbreaker on Love after 10 minutes.
—
Cactus Jack came out to the ring, with a little bit of a limp. He said that Taz wanted Cactus Jack. Mick Foley was ready to hang up his boots, but Taz wanted the magic one more time. And he and Taz tore the house down last week. Now, the fire is re-lit. Jack doesn’t know exactly what’s next for him, but he’ll be back in an AEW ring soon enough. Bang Bang!
—
Match 2 - Hook (17-4) vs. LA Park Jr. (2-3)
Hook gets back on the winning track with the REDRUM at 6:29. He gets on the mic and tells Guevara that the FTW Championship was anything but a vanity title for him. He made it that way when he beat Malakai Black and Raven in the middle of the ring. And he’ll be coming back for the TNT Championship now.
—
Natural Selection is backstage. Brian Cage, holding the All-Atlantic Championship, and sporting a healing cut across his forehead. Shelton Benjamin and Cedric Alexander flanking him and Cesar Duran.
Duran says that Cage beat the stuffing out of Samoa Joe, who is going to be out of commission for a long time. He might even be out of AEW forever, afraid to show his face again here. Who will the next challenger be? Benjamin and Alexander suffered a minor setback last week, but they’ll be on their way to becoming champions again soon enough.
—
Main Event - Jeff Cobb (7-7) vs. Doc Gallows (0-0)
Cobb was about to get the win, but Gallows poked him in the eyes. While the ref was checking on Cobb, Gallows rolled him up and grabbed his tights for leverage, getting the win at 10:39.
Next premiere event - July 19/21: Fight for the Fallen
Featuring - First Round of TBS Title Tournament
