ULTIMATE PRO WRESTLING
"COMBAT EVOLVED"
Friday, June 9th, 2023
Walter Pyramid, Long Beach, CA
The show opens with a video package that includes short interviews with all four wrestlers competing tonight in the semi-finals of the Premier Title tournament. We package starts with Jay White, who has this to say:
"Buddy Matthews, at 'Combat Evolved', you're going to find out why 'Switchblade' Jay White has main evented all over the world, wrestled the best on the planet, and even sold out the Tokyo Dome. I'm a true superstar in this sport, and I'm not even 30 fuckin' years old yet. You? You couldn't even main event at Full Sail University, mate, let alone sell anything out. You may have the money mark Freddie Prinze Jr. fooled into thinking you're some big shot, but I know the truth. Behind all of those angry scowls and those oiled up, juiced up muscles, you're insecure and you're scared shitless. Well, at 'Combat Evolved', you damn well should be, because you're about to be exposed."
We then see Buddy Matthews in a training facility wearing work out clothing along with two other men standing by his side:
"My mates here from Australia have met me here to train for maybe the biggest match of my life, as I get the pleasure of crushing Jay White's dreams as I achieve my own. Mostly, it's going to be a pleasure to just shut this guy up, because Jay? For all of your posturing and your brooding and tough guy talk, brother, you sure as Hell didn't want to mix it up with me back at 'State of the Art'. You had your chance to strike first and show me what you've got when I was weak, and you showed your hand to everybody. You're nothing but a paper tiger, and I'm going to shred you in Long Beach on the 9th. You see, me and my mates, we got a saying: The Mighty Don't Kneel. And Jay, I know you'd like for me to just bend the knee and let you go on your way to what you think is your destiny, but you've got a harsh reality about to slap you in the face. Iron strengthens iron in this gym, and I'm ready for war. I'm ready for anything and everything you've got. I don't care what you did in Japan, and I don't care who you've beaten to get here, because I'm hungry, I'm driven, and I'm done being overlooked. UPW's officials see what everybody's seen for a long time, and they aren't sleeping on Buddy Matthews. Neither should you. But it'd be my bet you haven't gotten much sleep at all, judging by the look on your face last time we came eye to eye. On Friday night at the Walter Pyramid, there's no more talk. There's no more games. And Jay, mate, believe me when I tell you at 'Combat Evolved' there's nowhere left for you to run or hide; you're going to have to face me and back up those words, and once I get my hands on you... heh... it's going to be a massacre."
We now head to Chris Dijak from a dash camera in his vehicle:
"Ilja Dragunov is the talk of the town here in UPW. Everybody loves this guy. He's just got that heart and that grit, and he calls himself 'Invincible', because seemingly... 'seemingly'... nobody can break him. Meanwhile, look at me. Christopher Dijak. A man clearly more gifted, much more impressive, with the same track record or better, and what do I get in return? Resentment. Resentment from fans who would like to see me fail because they know deep down I'm better than them. I guess my story doesn't resonate, because I've always just been better, you people despise me for it. That's fine. Hey, you know what? I'll be the bad guy if I have to, because the fact of the matter is, none of you matter. And Ilja Dragunov, your feel good story? It's about to come to an end, because this is real life, and in real life, the best man wins. And make no mistake about it, Ilja, Chris Dijak is the best man. The better man. And you are just an 'also ran' in my race to the top of the mountain here in UPW. So UPW fans, show up, tune in and feast your eyes, because it doesn't matter if you boo me or cheer me, love me or hate me, when the bell sounds and the match is over, it's going to be ME heading to 'Reign Supreme' to compete for the Premier Championship! And Ilja, you can call yourself whatever you want, put in your little eye contacts and little jacket, try to make believe you're some kind of superhuman, but I promise you, I PROMISE YOU... at 'Combat Evolved'... I'm going to break you."
We then go to an outdoor location in a wooded area, where we see Ilja Dragunov breathing somewhat heavily in work out clothes:
"Ah, isn't this thrilling!? Each night I've been here in UPW, I've done nothing but fight the fight of my life, because this is what it's all about! The gold and the glory! With each match, I grow stronger, I grow more dangerous, as I learn and adapt and have to dig deeper inside of myself to find that beast that lives there... that DRAGON that is trying to rip its way out! Dijak, the dragon is clawing inside of me, that fire is burning me alive! On Friday the 9th, I'm going to enter the Walter Pyramid a man on fire, ready for glorious battle! My mind, my body, and my soul have been forged in this fire, as I've been in war after war... and my campaign has just begun! 'The Mad Dragon' is here to conquer! The Czar of Professional Wrestling is here, in UPW, with one goal in mind, and that is REIGN SUPREME... and that's where I'm headed, Dijak! 'Reign Supreme', I will be one of the men challenging for that Premier championship belt, and it's kill or be killed between then and now. Do you have what it takes? You look the part, and you talk the talk, but do really have what it takes to fight FIRE WITH FIRE!? You haven't been tested just yet, Dijak, but on June 9th, 'Combat Evolved'... let us find out what kind of man you truly are, and if you're really man enough to stop me."
Ilja goes back to doing handstand push ups in the woods, and we then head to Kevin Kelly and Caprice Coleman at ringside, who are ready to call tonight's action! They discuss that video package before also showing a graphic for the X Division title qualifier matches that will take place tonight. Also tonight, we will have the semi-finals of the Tag Team title tournament. We then head to Mike Rome in the ring, who is ready to introduce our first competitors of the evening.
MATCH ONE
X DIVISION TITLE QUALIFIER
Justin Gabriel vs. Joaquin Wilde
This was a short, by the numbers spot oriented match that got the fans going early on. These two did a good job of keeping the energy up, as Wilde was heeling it up tonight and Gabriel was able to play a convincing baby face. The veteran Wilde would work over the back of Gabriel throughout, but the high impact, innovative offense of the South African proved to be too much for him, as Gabriel delivered a 450 Splash to get the pinfall victory to advance to the four-way Ladder Match at "Reign Supreme" to crown the X Division champion.
Winner by Pinfall: Justin Gabriel
MATCH TWO
TAG TEAM TITLE TOURNAMENT
Los Ingobernales: Rush & Dragon Lee vs. MSK: Nash Carter & Wes Lee
This was a wild match that almost completely went off the rails at times, but was pretty good fun had by all in attendance. Both teams showed they have great chemistry, but MSK just seemed to have more momentum and more heart throughout. In a spectacular ending, Carter would get Dragon Lee up on his shoulders in the Doomsday position, leading to Wes showing his amazing agility in springboarding and catching Dragon with a Doomsday Canadian Destroyer! Carter would kick Rush as he tried to come in to break things up and Wes would pin Dragon for the three count.
Winners by Pinfall: Nash Carter & Wes Lee
MATCH THREE
X DIVISION TITLE QUALIFIER
AR Fox vs. Kalisto
These two know each other well, as they've been both opponents and tag team partners many times in the past. The fans were maybe a little burned out by the nonstop action by this point, but these two tried not to overstay their welcome. This match had some great, creative, athletic reversals, but eventually Kalisto would manage to catch AR Fox with a Bridging Package Powerbomb to get the three count and advance to the four-way Ladder Match at "Reign Supreme".
Winner by Pinfall: Kalisto
MATCH FOUR
TAG TEAM TITLE TOURNAMENT
British Strong Style: Pete Dunne & Tyler Bate vs. Hart Dynasty: Teddy Hart & Tyson Kidd
We had a change of pace here, finally, as these guys, despite being very fast in their own right, would display technical prowess not yet seen on this show. The Hart Dynasty would take to slowing things down and milking their moves a bit, with Teddy Hart especially working the crowd for heat throughout. Tyler Bate would execute an amazing reversal to swing the momentum, popping off the mat to deliver a European Uppercut to counter a Shooting Star Press from Hart, following up with a tag to Dunne. Dunne and Kidd would then have a tough back and forth exchange, landing hard shots before Dunne managed to hit the Orange Crush and get the three count to advance his team to the finals!
Winners by Pinfall: Pete Dunne & Tyler Bate
MATCH FIVE
X DIVISION TITLE QUALIFIER
Matt Sydal vs. Shane "Swerve" Strickland
This match had some really stiff shots in it, as Strickland would land some nasty roundhouse kicks and Sydal hit a Bicycle Knee Strike at one point that looked like it knocked Strickland unconscious. Sydal thought he had the match won with a Lightning Spiral, but "Swerve" somehow managed to kick out at 2.999. Sydal would place Strickland on top and seemed to be looking for a Spanish Fly maybe, but "Swerve" fought out and hung up Sydal in the Tree of Woe, leading to a Hanging Swerve Stomp! Sydal stumbles up and Strickland catches him with another high Roundhouse Kick before lifting him onto his shoulders and delivering the Storm Cradle Driver! "Swerve" holds him down and it's an academic three count. Strickland's headed to "Reign Supreme" for the big X Division Ladder Match!
Winner by Pinfall: Shane Strickland
MATCH SIX
PREMIER TITLE TOURNAMENT
Chris Dijak vs. "Invincible" Ilja Dragunov
Dijak and Dragunov have a hard fought war here, as was expected. Both men wanted nothing more than to be in the main event of "Reign Supreme", and pulled out all of the stops to try to make it happen. Dijak would do his best to try to break Dragunov, as promised. He would use the ring steps at one point to smash him into the railing on the outside, and would hit a super impressive Corkscrew Moonsault on him once back in the ring, but somehow the Russian managed to kick out! Dragunov would show his strength, executing German Suplexes, an Exploder Suplex, and a Death Valley Driver into the buckles, but Dijak still wouldn't stay down! Dragunov would try to hit his Constantine Special Lariat at one point, but Dijak would manage to deliver a Spinning Big Boot to counter it! Dijak would get Ilja up for Feast Your Eyes, but Ilja would slide off and latch on with a Sleeper, but Dijak would fight him off, bashing him into the buckles until he finally let go. Dijak would attempt a Chokeslam, but Ilja would reverse with a Leaping Knee Strike, followed by a Jumping Enzuigiri, and then hit the Constantine Special, but only got a two count! Dragunov would attempt the Torpedo Moscow, but Dijak would catch him with a boot and then hit a Chokeslam Backbreaker for a two count. Dijak would once again try for Feast Your Eyes, but Ilja would land on his feet and block the knee strike! He falls back into the ropes and comes back with a Front Dropkick! Ilja rolls to his feet and Dijak stumles forward. Dijak tries for a clothesline but Ilja ducks and runs behind Dijak. Dijak turns and Ilja has a full head of steam... Torpedo Moscow! Ilja smashes him with the headbutt, and Ilja hooks the leg back hard! Ilja gets the three count and it's all over! Ilja is going to the finals and the fans are on their feet chanting for him!
Winner by Pinfall: Ilja Dragunov
MATCH SEVEN
X DIVISION TITLE QUALIFIER
Jay Lethal vs. Senshi
These two know each other well from the New York wrestling scene. Caprice mentions that Jay looked up to Senshi as he was coming up in the business, but he was showing him no respect here, goading him to bring it. These two really laid it in, as Senshi was absolutely vicious in his striking tonight. Lethal would eat all of it and keep fighting, yelling at Senshi that he wants more! These two would have a fast paced back and forth finale, with each man missing moves before Lethal manages to handspring and deliver his Lethal Injection to smash Senshi and hook the leg to get the win! After the match, both men shake hands in a show of respect as Jay Lethal is the final man to be added to the X Division Ladder Match at "Reign Supreme".
Winner by Pinfall: Jay Lethal
MATCH EIGHT
PREMIER TITLE TOURNAMENT
Buddy Matthews vs. "Switchblade" Jay White
There was a big fight atmosphere here, as the fans really wanted to see these two tear into each other. Buddy would come out draped in the Australian flag and the fans would chant "OI! OI! OI!" for him throughout his entrance and at various times in the match. At one point, Jay White, being a New Zealander, would grab the Australian flag and wipe his backside with it before using it to choke Matthews on the outside to get some heat. White would use every advantage he could to try to keep the bigger and more imposing Matthews down, but Buddy just didn't seem to have an ounce of quit in him. These two would have a big sequence that lead to a Blade Runner from White that seemed like it might end things, but Matthews managed to kick out in what was a big false finish. Matthews looked like he might win it with the Curb Stomp, but White would also kick out. White would manage to escape the Whale Hunt a few times, but Matthews would finally deliver it, but "Switchblade" would somehow kick out! Kevin Kelly wondered just what the Hell they would have to do to keep each other down, as both men hand landed their best shots. Jay White would catch Buddy with a low mule kick and deliver a Cross Leg Brainbuster, but Matthews still kicked out! White would use a throat slash motion to call for the end. White put Buddy up on the top turnbuckle. White heads up and hooks him in, but Buddy fights him off with punches to the ribs and then grabs his hair and headbutts him! And then again! And again! Buddy then pounds White repeatedly to the back of the neck with forearms! Referee Chad Patton yells at him to get down, but Buddy isn't having it. Buddy latches his arms around White and lifts him up on the top turnbuckle! Buddy shows his amazing strength, standing straight up with "Switchblade" in the powerbomb position on the top turnbuckle... AND THEN HE LEAPS OFF AND TO THE OUTSIDE! HE JUST POWERBOMBED JAY WHITE OFF THE TOP TURNBUCKLE THROUGH THE ANNOUNCER'S TABLE! "HOLY SHIT!" chants ERUPT in the Walter Pyramid as both men are down on the outside, but Jay White is covered in the wreckage. Matthews is rolling around on the floor, grabbing the apron to get back to his feet. White isn't moving at all. Chad Patton goes to the outside to inspect the situation, sort of counting and assessing the damage. Buddy gets back into the ring as Patton gets to around a 10 count, and Patton just decides to call it. White isn't moving, and so Chad Patton calls for the bell and signals for the medical staff to get out there immediately. This one is over, and these fans are buzzing and chanting! What a finish!
Winner by TKO: Buddy Matthews
Kevin Kelly manages to get back on the call and says he can't believe what he just saw. He says Buddy Matthews is heading to "Reign Supreme" to face Ilja Dragunov for the Premier Championship, as we get a camera shot of Buddy standing on the ropes looking down on the fallen Jay White, who is covered is broken wood and still selling like death. Kelly says fans need to make sure to tune in to "Reign Supreme", as the "Invincible" Ilja Dragunov faces the "Unstoppable" Buddy Matthews for the Premier Championship!
And with that, this show comes to an end.
