As All Elite Wrestling speeds toward the second annual edition of the Fyter Fest on April 26 and 28, AEW presents The Road to Fyter Fest, recapping the past few weeks of AEW action, broken down by storylines.
The King of Trios tournament:
The New Day defeated Jurassic Express in a hard-fought match. Jungle Boy caught Kofi Kingston in a Snare Trap, but Big E broke it up, and he got the pinfall on Marko Stunt after a Big Ending.
Cody Rhodes and the Young Bucks defeated Beer Money and Shaun Spears. There was heavy Apex influence in the match, but Jon Moxley and Chris Jericho helped to clear everyone out, and Rhodes scored the pinfall.
In the second round of the tournament, Rhodes and The Young Bucks defeated the New Day after a Super Kick Party and BTE Trigger on Woods.
The RVD/Sabu/Malenko vs. Chosen Bros and Gable Steveson match was also back-and-forth, but ended in controversy after Malenko and Riddle spilled to the outside. Both men were counted out, though they contended that the ref counted too fast. Cesar Duran and Natural Selection were quick to respond to the double countout, and said they deserved a shot at the tournament. It was unfair to hold them out of the tournament just because they are already the tag team champions.
This led to a setup of a triple threat, nine-man tag team match to determine the team that will face Rhodes and the Bucks at Fyter Fest. It’ll be Natural Selection vs. RVD/Sabu/Malenko vs. Chosen Bros/Gable Steveson during the April 19 edition of Dynamite. As a reminder, the winning team of the overall tournament gets both a tag title shot and an All-Atlantic Championship match at Double or Nothing in May.
Women’s Championships
Jade Cargill has continued her dominant run in AEW, as she has now passed more than 12 months undefeated. As of Fyter Fest, the inaugural AEW Women’s Champion will have held her belt for a full calendar year. She’s tightened her grip at the top of all women’s professional wrestling by defeating Sasha Banks for the UWA Women’s Title. Now the rest of the women in AEW want a shot. After weeks of bickering, there will be a battle royale on April 19 to determine who will face Cargill during Fyter Fest.
Jeff Jarrett’s quest for the UWA Men’s World Championship
Jarrett blames Chris Jericho for his earlier loss to Jon Moxley that saw Mox get a shot at Jericho’s belt. Since then, Jarrett has defeated Mox and attacked Jericho, while the two continue to be a thorn in the Apex’s side. Jarrett will face Jericho for the UWA Championship at Double or Nothing. At Fyter Fest, Jericho and Shawn Spears will team up against Mox and Jericho.
Samoa Joe
Joe remains the All-Atlantic Champion, following a great match with Rey Mysterio at March Madness. As he continued to attack Rey after the match, Taz and Hook ran out to end the attack.
Joe — while still getting his share of cheers from the audience — has called Taz washed up, and says he should have stayed behind the announce table. Taz responded by saying he’s had to scratch and claw his way to get everything in his life. Samoa Joe reminds Taz of himself; hungry and ruthless. But Taz always respected his opponents, while Joe clearly doesn’t respect anyone else. He vows to make Joe respect him and take the All-Atlantic Championship.
Joe vs. Taz is set for Fyter Fest.
AEW World Championship storyline
Following March Madness, MVP put his hat in the ring against Goldberg, while the champion scoffed and asked MVP who he thought he was to challenge him. Goldberg is unstoppable.
MVP continued winning matches, and Tony Khan booked the match for Fyter Fest.
