AEW Dynamite -
Jan. 11, 2023
Jan. 11, 2023
Fireworks and the cheering crowd greet us to this week’s Dynamite, live from Charleston, SC. We close in on Coach and Taz at the desk, who give us a rundown of tonight’s matches — Mick Foley takes on James Storm; Serena Deeb vs. Velvet Sky; and the main event of Jake Hager against Gable Steveson. Coach mentions that we’ll hear from AEW World Champion Cody Rhodes and wife Brandi later in the show, though they aren’t in attendance; and Goldberg will come out to address the crowd at the top of the hour!
But first, the Steiner Bros. come out, and they look like they’re all business. The crowd cheers and chants “thank you” to the tag team as Scott grabs the mic.
Scott - “I’ve got to say, we feel a little bit naked standing out here without the tag team titles around our waists. And I mean naked in a bad way. Not the sexy way.” Rick looks at him with a puzzled expression. “But the Steiner Brothers didn’t get to the top of this business by tucking our tails between our legs and giving up. Natural Selection, you can be certain of this: We’ll be coming back after you soon enough. But another opportunity has come up that we just can’t pass up. And that is the UWA Tag Team Championships.” Before he can continue, “Hey Yo” comes over the speakers and The Outsiders walk out.
Scott Hall - “This whole company is based on people who used to be relevant coming out here and demanding that they be handed the world. First it was Jeff Jarrett; then it was the two of you; hell, even Raven got a title shot right away; and now Bill Goldberg wants to go straight to the top. But Kev and I? We’re out here to take the world into our hands and run with it. So, tonight we’re going to take care of the Headbangers. It’ll be our warmup match before facing FTR later this month. Survey says the fans want to see The Outsiders vs. FTR more than the Steiners.”

Match 1 - Mick Foley (1-1) vs. James Storm (0-2) w/ Bobby Roode
Foley comes out in normal attire — not as any of his personas. Storm takes him lightly at first and Foley almost makes him pay with a Double Underhook DDT into a nearfall. Roode helps Storm get back on track after a distraction that allows Storm to low blow Foley and roll him up for the win at 8:54. Foley is upset afterward, while the heels walk up the ramp.
—
Backstage, Matt Riddle is playing charades with Jeff Cobb and The Hurricane. He pumps himself up and walks around like he’s tall and muscular, and has a cross eyed look on his face. Hurricane shouts out that he’s being Hernandez. Riddle says, “bro! You got it on the first try!” Then they high-five as we cut to…
—
Gable Steveson is in his locker room stretching for his match later tonight with Jake Hager. Samoa Joe walks in and says he just wants to wish him luck; he’s not here to cause any trouble. Know this: If Steveson wins tonight, Joe will sign off on an All-Atlantic Title shot. But a match with the Samoan Submission Machine isn’t exactly a walk in the park. “Good luck, kid,” and Joe walks out.
—
Sammy Guevara and Tay Melo recorded a promo earlier tonight, where Sammy said that MVP disrespected him last week. He can’t wait for Beach Break and the chance to put MVP in his place.
—
Match 2 - Serena Deeb (7-4) vs. Velvet Sky (1-2) w/ Madison Rayne and Angelina Love
Deeb gets the win when Sky taps to her Serenity Lock at 5:42. Rayne and Love jumped in afterward and started beating her down when the lights cut out.
When they come back on, Abadon and Alexa Bliss are in the ring. The Beautiful People are knocked out in the ring, and Abadon hits the Twist of Hate on Deeb. All four women are laying in the ring. Abadon looks over at Bliss, who responds by hitting Twisted Bliss on Deeb. The two of them walk slowly up the ramp as we go to commercial.

Commercial for new weekly show, AEW Rampage, debuting on Friday, Feb. 3. AEW Rampage will be an hour-long show filled to the brim with more exciting All Elite Wrestling action!
—
We are in the Rhodes family living room, with Cody and Brandi talking to the camera in a pre-recorded segment. Cody said he knows that he’ll catch some flack for not being there tonight to confront Goldberg; but he needs to be home with his wife after her vicious attack last week at the hands of Abadon. They’re tired of the sneak attacks. When the match is one-on-one in the ring, Brandi and Cody will prevail.
—
LAX is backstage. Konnan cuts a promo on Matt Riddle and says he really needs to stop disrespecting them. Tonight, LAX is going to teach Riddle, Cobb and Hurricane a lesson. Konnan is even going to tag in this time.
—
The House of Black comes out to the ring, then Malakai Black makes his more theatrical entrance. He mentions his loss to Raven, calling him a coward for running out of the cage last month. Or maybe he’s smart enough to get away. They do have a common enemy in Hook, and it’s time to finally end this three-way dance.
—
Match 3 - The Outsiders (1-1) vs. The Headbangers (0-0)
Nash and Hall make quick work of the Headbangers, who made a boisterous entrance. Nash pinned Mosh after a Jackknife Powerbomb at 2:23. After the match, Hall loads Thrasher up for the Razor’s Edge when Goldberg’s music hits and out walks Goldberg in jeans and a t-shirt. As he marches down to the ring, Hall drops Thrasher and the Outsiders scatter through the crowd.
Goldberg gets to the ring as Mosh and Thrasher each stand. He spears Mosh, then kicks Thrasher and delivers a Jackhammer before grabbing a microphone.
“The mistake everyone around here is making is that they think I’m asking for special treatment. I’m not asking for a damn thing. I’m here to get revenge and to kick some ass. Cody Rhodes, you’re on my list. Nash and Hall, you’re on my list, too. But I guess I should start with Cody — it’s not your fault, really. But while you were in the locker room looking up to me, your beloved daddy was working behind the scenes to stop my streak and cut my career short. Men like Dusty Rhodes are the reason why I stepped away from this business for 12 years. And when I saw you with the AEW World Championship, Cody? I decided right then that I wanted to come here and end your reign. So, Cody Rhodes — you’re next!” - commercial
—
After the commercial, Jake Hager is backstage complaining to Tony Khan that he should get a rematch without having to fight Gable Steveson. Tony tells him he should probably start warming up. Hager walks off in a huff.
—
Match 4 - Matt Riddle, Jeff Cobb & Hurricane vs. LAX (Homicide, Hernandez & Konnan)
LAX isolates Riddle early until he gets a hot tag to Hurricane, who runs wild on Homicide and Konnan until Hernandez clotheslines his head off. Cobb later gets a hot tag and hits the Tour of the Islands on Homicide, but just gets a 2-count when Konnan breaks up the pin. This brings all 6 men into the ring. Eventually, Riddle, Cobb, Homicide and Hernandez spill to the outside, while Konnan and Hurricane are the legal men in the ring. Konnan locks in the Tequila Sunrise on Hurricane and gets the submission victory at 14:20.

The Apex comes out to the ring and doesn't look particularly happy. Jeff Jarrett grabs a mic and the crowd starts chanting “na na na na, hey hey, good-bye.” JBL grabs the mic and tells the crowd to shut up when they’re in the presence of greatness. This brings out more boos, and Jarrett grabs the mic back.
Jarrett - “Yes, yes, I get it. All of you are jealous of my success; of our success. When you’re at the top of the mountain the only place to go is down. Unfortunately, I was pinned for the first time a couple weeks ago. And The Apex stands here without any championships.” The crowd cheers loudly. “This is, frankly, unacceptable. But we will bounce back starting with UWA Champion Chris Jericho later this month. Chris and I have crossed paths in the past…” Jarrett’s mic cuts out as the group looks around confusedly.
The opening chords of “Wild Thing” hit and the crowd goes wild as Jon Moxley walks out onto the stage. He smiles and soaks in the cheers before talking.
Jon - “I needed that. I really did. The last time I was in the ring, I got my ass handed to me by Samoa Joe. I took some time off to heal and to reflect. And now I’m ready to get back in the ring, just in time for the Battle of the Belts and a UWA Championship chance. Jeff, you’re in the ring, thinking you’ve got that belt all but won. But before you can do that, you’ve got to get past me. And it’s hard to get past me when I’m pissed off.” Mox walks off as Jarrett throws a fit in the ring.

A pre-taped video on Paige VanZant’s injury rehab airs. She expects to be back soon and wants revenge on Ronda Rousey.
—
UWA Champion Sasha Banks and AEW Champion Jade Cargill will be at Dynamite next week for an official contract signing for their Battle of the Belts match.
—
Main event - Jake Hager (6-5) vs. Gable Steveson (9-1)
Hager approaches the match cautiously and tries to avoid getting taken down by Steveson. After Steveson hits a couple of suplexes, Hager slides out of the ring continually. When Steveson finally follows, Hager slides back in and stomps on an entering Steveson. Hager controls things for a bit, leaning hard on Steveson’s neck and keeping the former Olympian down. Hager gets a little overzealous and goes for a diving elbow drop that Steveson rolls out of the way from. When Hager rises, Steveson ounces and hits the Olympic Slam! He goes for the pinfall and gets the 1…2…3 in 14:58.
After the match, Samoa Joe comes out with the All-Atlantic Championship and gives Steveson a slow clap as the show ends.
