WCW Monday Nitro episode 10 for 01.09.23
Live from the TaxSlayer Center in Moline, Illinois
Commentary: Gorilla Monsoon and Don Callis
Ring Announcer: Gary Michael Cappetta
Interviewer: SoCal Val
Referees: Tommy Young, Joey Marella and Aubrey Edwards
The show opens on the interview stage with SoCal Val and Magnum TA. She asks about him not being on last week’s show. “I was ready to challenge Paul Orndorff for the WCW World Heavyweight Title because I eliminated him from the Terrific Tussle. I asked Shane McMahon and he told me about the plan to give a title shot to Bob Holly, because Orndorff jumped him and took his spot in the Tussle. I held off, because unlike Orndorff I respect management and I respect my fellow wrestlers. There was nobody cheering for Holly more in the back last week than me, but he didn’t get the job done and now I’m asking for my shot at Starrcade.”
Col. Robert Fuller comes out. He says Orndorff isn’t there tonight, but you just don’t ask and receive from the world’s champion. If Magnum wants to prove himself, he can wrestle Tom Magee tonight. If he wins, maybe, just maybe, they’ll think about a title shot.
In the first match of a tag team tournament to determine who gets the UWA Universal Tag Team Title shot at Starrcade, the New Foundation of Owen Hart and Jim Neidhart defeat ReDRagon of Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly by pinfall of Hart on Fish via Hart Attack Clothesline at 13:32.

Back from break, Disco Inferno is out dancing with the Nitro Girls. The Honky Tonk Man comes out to smack Disco in the head with a guitar, but he turns, kicks HTM in the gut and gives Honky his own version of the Shake, Rattle and Roll. He then fakes playing the guitar and goes off with the Nitro Girls.
Shane McMahon in the ring announces the six men who are going to be in the Money in the Bank ladder match at Starrcade: The Resurrection. They’re going to compete in a six-man tag team match right now.
Eddie Kingston, Dolph Ziggler and Rocky Johnson defeated Kevin Owens, Ronnie Garvin and Marc Mero by pinfall of Kingston on Mero with a handful of tights on an O’Connor roll at 12:28. The heels beat feet after as the faces protest the cheating.

Tessa Blanchard defeated Gigi Dolin by pinfall at 7:21 via Buzzsaw. Ember Moon runs out after the match and tries to attack Blanchard, but Blanchard ducks the slingshot clothesline into the ring. Moon rolls through to her feet and comes off the opposite set of ropes with a moonsault crossbody to take Blanchard out. She then gets the sitout scoop slam piledriver to leave Blanchard lying. Callis mentions how Moon eliminated Blanchard at the Tussle and he guesses she’s not done with the former WCW Women’s Champion.
Hulk Hogan goes up to Kevin Owens in the back and tells him he has to wrestle “Killer” Kevin Kross tonight for him. Owens said he was just in a six man tag match. Wasn’t Hogan watching the show? He was doing the prayers, the training and the vitamins in the back. He can’t be watching Nitro, when he is Nitro, brother. But, he knows Owens can go twice tonight because he’s been saying his prayers, doing the training and taking his vitamins just like the Hulkster has been telling him. “Yeah, but it’s not as good as a dental plan.” “What, brother?” “Nevermind.”

“Superstar” Billy Graham is on the interview stage with SoCal Val. “The Superstar has his eyes set on Starrcade. He has his eyes set on the WCW Gulf Coast Title. He has his eyes set on his old foe, Bruno Sammartino. Bruno needs to remember that I’ve taken a title belt from him, but he’s never taken a title belt from me. I want that strap around his waist and I’m going to take it, simply by saying it. Bruno might be the Italian Superman by I’m Darkseid with the muscular backside, jack. And we get to the State Farm Arena in my hometown of Phoenix, Arizona, the sun will be shining on the Superstar.”
Bobby Lashley defeated The Warlord by pinfall at 8:12 via Dominator. Meng and Barbarian tried to charge the ring after, but were cutoff by Junkyard Dog and Tony Atlas. Everyone brawls to break.

Magnum TA defeated “Mega Man” Tom Magee with Col. Robert Fuller by pinfall via belly to belly suplex at 9:07. Magnum slides out of the Mega Driver and Magee turns around into a dropkick. He lines up the belly to belly suplex, but Fuller gets on the apron. Magnum slings Magee into Fuller, he falls off the apron, Magee stumbles back into Magnum and takes the belly to belly suplex for the loss.
SoCal Val has Thunder Rosa on the interview stage. “From out of nowhere, I proved myself and won the Terrific Tussle. It wasn’t Charlotte Flair. It wasn’t Tessa Blanchard. It wasn’t Mickie James-Aldis. It wasn’t Kamille Kaine. I saw the betting lines from Las Vegas and I know I wasn’t a favorite to win and I won’t be a favorite to win the UWA Women’s Title at Starrcade either, whether the champion is still Sasha Banks or someone else, like Jade Cargill who I know has a title shot coming. But I have overcome the odds and defied expectations my whole life. It’s the reason I’m standing here and it’s the reason I will be the new UWA Women’s Champion after Starrcade.”

Smith Family Legacy of Tyson Kidd and Harry Smith with Davey Boy Smith defeated The Varsity Blondes of Griff Garrison and Brian Pillman Jr. with Brian Pillman Sr. to advance in the tag team tournament for a UWA Tag Team Title shot by pinfall of Smith on Pillman Jr. after a double team power slam. Davey Boy and Brian Sr. get into it on the outside, creating a distraction to allow the double team. Kidd takes out Garrison from making the save.
SoCal Val has Kurt Angle on the interview stage. “For two weeks in a row, the UWA Men’s Champion Chris Jericho hasn’t been here on Nitro. Everybody jeered Nick Aldis for never showing up and now Jericho is doing the same thing. The Lionheart is a coward, because he doesn’t want to be in the same arena with me. The only reason he’ll show at Starrcade is because he’ll be stripped of that belt if he doesn’t. It could be someone else wearing that strap at Starrcade, but I hope it’s Jericho. Because if there is anybody in the entire UWA that needs to know what the three I’s of intensity, integrity and intelligence are, it’s Chris Jericho. It takes more than hitting the gym and a good diet plan to be a real man and a true champion. Oh, it’s true. It’s damn true.”

In a non-title match, the WCW Gulf Coast Champions Terry and Dory Funk Jr. defeated “The Cruncher” Larry Zbyszko and Tony Garea by pinfall of Terry on Garea by spiked piledriver at 10:27. Zbyszko throws his hands up and walks out on his partner after the bell, not checking on him. It’s mentioned on commentary how Zbyszko and Garea were former WWWF World Tag Team Champions.
The Patriot is out on the interview stage with SoCal Val. He’s waving a U.S. Flag. Patriot said he was wrong to look outside the greatest country in the world, the United States, for a team to go after the WCW Trios Titles. El Samurai and Blue Demon Jr. didn’t get the job done, because they weren’t Made in America. Blue Demon then comes out and starts speaking Spanish. Patriot tells him to speak English, son, you’re in America. Demon points at his mask. Then he points at Patriot’s mask. Val believes Demon wants a mask vs. mask match. He nods. And she would guess he wants it at Starrcade. He nods again. Well, maybe that’s what he’s saying, but we can’t be sure, the Patriot says.
Thunder Rosa then comes back out and translates. That’s exactly what he wants. Being a masked wrestler in Mexico has a long and storied history that the Patriot can’t understand or respect. Patriot doesn’t think Blue Demon said all that. He also wouldn’t be sure that Rosa isn’t lying, because you know…Is it because she’s Mexican or a woman or both. Well, you said it…Demon gets the drift Rosa is being insulted, strikes Patriot and they brawl.

“Killer” Kevin Kross defeated “The Prizefighter” Kevin Owens by pinfall via Doomsday Saito at 14:02. Kross strikes hard and fast and keeps Owens constantly on the move to wear him out. Owens is just out of gas by the time of the finish. Eli Drake and Mike Bennett run out for a beatdown. Terry and Dory Funk, who will face the Miracle Workers at Starrcade, run out to make the save. Once the heels runs off down the aisle, Hulk Hogan then appears and points at them. They dodge Hogan by going into the crowd. The Funks check on Owens on the outside while Hogan poses in the ring.
