Joey Styles: This is AWA Wednesday Night Warriors! Hello wrestling fans around the globe - we are live from the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas! We have six matches on the card tonight, every single one of them main-event quality, and completely indicative of the action you’ll see only in the American Wrestling Association. For example, there are two championships on the line tonight, and the only place to see those matches is right here – AWA Intercontinental championship Nigel McGuinness battles a former AWA champ in his own right, Rick Martel, and also, Tully Blanchard gets a rematch against the AWA Television title holder, the Japanese legend, the Great Muta, in a falls count anywhere match!
But that’s not all – and to tell you all about the rest of the card, my color partner, my main man, Josh Mathews! All yours, partner!
Josh Mathews: Hi everybody – it’s great to be here calling the action for you tonight and every week on AWA Wednesday Night Warriors. Also in action: Barry Windham battles Adam Cole! “The Pope” D’Angelo Dinero faces Petey Williams! In tag-team action, representing the HoRsemen, Beer Money meets the Midnight Express! And in another tag bout, Badd Company faces off against the BlueBloods! And if that wasn’t enough, tonight, we will find out who Daniel Bryan defends the most prestigious territorial title in wrestling against, the AWA Heavyweight championship, at Team Challenge Series!
Joey Styles: Thanks, Josh – now, let’s get to the ring where Christy Hemme is ready to announce our first tag match!
VS.
Badd Company (w/Kimberly Page) vs. the BlueBloods (w/Layla): Despite the contrast in styles, the two teams meshed very well. Throughout the contest, Barrett often paired off against Diamond, and Doug Williams tangled with Tanaka. The slight power advantage Barrett brought to the match paid off, as the BlueBloods controlled it at several key times, using throws and suplexes to wear their opponents down. Nonetheless, Badd Company rallied, and after a chaotic four-man brawl, Tanaka superkicked Williams to score the three-count.
VS.
Adam Cole vs. Barry Windham: Cole was accompanied to the ring by Ethan Carter III, one of his partners in the Team Challenge Series. Undaunted, Windham went on the offense early, but EC3’s constant chatter kept the Texan’s attention. The ROH stalwart took over, and went to work on Windham’s left leg and knee – elbowdrops, grapevines, and eventually a long figure-four that put the fans on the edges of their seats. But Windham would not stay down, and reversed the figure-four, using his long legs to trap Cole. As the referee checked on Cole, Carter hit the nearby hero with a chair, knocking him out – allowing “the Panama City Playboy” to reapply the hold; with Windham’s shoulders on the mat, the win was a given.
VS.
Tully Blanchard (w/JJ Dillon) vs. the Great Muta [C](w/Gary Hart): Dillon and Hart stayed in their corners, to avoid being ejected for a second straight week. With the “falls count anywhere” stipulation, the action flowed freely in and out of the ring, and even into the crowd, which was pro-Muta. They exchanged one- and two-counts all over the arena, neither man enjoying a sustained advantage. Eventually, the two men made it to the top of the ramp, and Muta rolled Blanchard into a small package, getting the one-two - - broken up by Beer Money! The three HoRsemen ganged up on the TV champ, until they were run off by Big Van Vader and Mike Awesome.
VS.
D’Angelo Dinero vs. Petey Williams: Fast-paced from the get-go. Dinero went in wanting to ground and pound the Canadian, while Williams wanted to work over “the Pope’s” midsection. Both men were up to the task of keeping it at a quick pace, and it was back-and-forth for the entire eleven minutes it lasted. It ended suddenly as well – Dinero missed a double-kneestrike in the corner, and Williams charged out of it, hitting his patented “Canadian Destroyer” for the then-easy win.
VS.
Beer Money (w/JJ Dillon) vs. the Midnight Express: The match didn’t last long, but it certainly featured a dizzying array of innovative offense. Roode and Storm jumped the Express to take the early advantage, but Lane and Eaton eventually battled back and frustrated their foes, forcing them to the outside. As Beer Money discussed strategy with their manager, Awesome and Muta bolted to ringside and attacked them, causing the disqualification. Officials ran down and restored order, but not before a few drops of blood were spilled.
Joey Styles: Before we get to tonight’s main event, we have a promise to fulfill. Earlier on, we told you that Daniel Bryan will be defending his AWA Heavyweight championship, live, on pay-per-view, at AWA: Team Challenge Series on April 20th. And we will tell you who his challenger is – right now. He is a former multi-time World champion, and a former multi-time World Tag-Team champion. He’s also an extremely shrewd businessman, as he negotiated a heavyweight title shot into his AWA contract! Fans, get ready to feel the bang – because in less than three weeks, Daniel Bryan goes one-on-one with Diamond Dallas Page for the AWA Heavyweight championship!
VS.
Rick Martel vs. Nigel McGuinness [C] (w/Layla): The competitors got the big fight announcements, courtesy of Christy Hemme, and then the match was on. Martel was on the attack early, using armdrags, dropkicks, and hiptosses to keep the Brit off-balance before grounding him with a grinding headlock. The Canadian was content to keep it on the mat, and it frustrated McGuinness as well. But he couldn’t hold him down forever, and McGuinness struck back with lariats, armwringers, and headbutts. The main event went almost 20 minutes, and as the champ wore down his foe, Scott Hall made an appearance and slowly walked down the ramp. As he approached, McGuinness yelled at him from just inside the ropes, allowing Martel to roll him up from behind. However, the shrewd title holder kept the momentum going, and with a handful of tights, stole the victory and retained the Intercontinental championship.
As soon as it ended, Hall charged the ring and tackled McGuinness. The two brawled as the cameras went dark, ending the show.
