WCW Monday Nitro episode 27 for 06.19.23
Live from the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, South Carolina
Commentary: Gorilla Monsoon and Wade Barrett
Ring Announcer: Gary Michael Cappetta
Interviewer: SoCal Val
Referees: Tommy Young, Joey Marella and Aubrey Edwards
“The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes is in the ring as we open. Rhodes apologizes for not being there last week and he was indeed filming car commercials for a friend of his that owns a dealership in Forsythe, Georgia, as Hulk Hogan said. The difference between Hogan and Rhodes is that Dusty has real friends who he’s happy to do things for and they’re happy to do things for him. That includes Sam Houston stepping up last week and helping out Ronnie Garvin while Rhodes was out.
This week Rhodes is going to be part of literally the biggest main event in Nitro history – a ten man tag of Rhodes, Houston, Garvin and the New Foundation against the nWo.
Rhodes is interrupted by Magnum TA. He won’t be forgotten and he won’t be ignored. Rhodes and Magnum might have different paths at Clash of Champions, but they will meet again. Magnum hopes Rhodes beats Hogan so he can smash his head into an Elimination Chamber pod at Phoenix Rising. He’s also sorry he couldn’t be in the main event to get at Rhodes there.
“Big Cat” Ernie Ladd then comes out. He also wanted to be in the main event to get at that no good, sick Tony Atlas. But since they both didn’t get what they wanted, why don’t they give the fans something they want and a match between Ladd and Magnum later on. The fans cheer and Magnum agrees. He then stares down Dusty again and says this isn’t over.

A limo pulls up and UWA Universal Men’s Champion Chris Jericho gets out. Curt Hennig tells him he’s late, the show’s already started. Jericho was coming from a personal appearance. Well, maybe he needs to keep a tighter schedule to get to his real commitments. Jericho says they can’t be at odds. It’s what Jake Roberts wants. Hennig wanted him there and he’s there.

Thunder Rosa and Tessa Blanchard defeated Charlotte Flair and Tamina Snuka with “Number One” Paul Jones by pinfall of Rosa on Snuka via Fire Thunder Driver at 10:30. It’s mentioned how Flair vs. Rosa will face off at Clash of Champions with the winner advancing to face Jade Cargill for the UWA Universal Women’s Title. Flair walks off in disgust after the loss. Jones berates Snuka for losing again. She punches Jones and then leaves him laying with a pump handle slam.
-----
SoCal Val has Kamille Kaine on the entrance stage. She demands Rhea Ripley to come out, who has been watching her matches the past three weeks. Ripley comes out and tells Kaine that she is a lioness. And a what a lioness does is survey the herd and pick off the weakest first. In her mind, that’s Kaine. Who couldn’t get the job done against Charlotte Flair, Lady Frost or Tessa Blanchard and win the WCW Women’s Title. Let’s get in that ring and see who’s weak as Kaine promises to spear Ripley out of her boots.

Magnum TA defeated “Big Cat” Ernie Ladd by pinfall via belly to belly suplex at 9:29. Tony Atlas walked out and distracted Ladd as he had Magnum up for the running shoulder breaker. Magnum managed to get out, hit a standing dropkick, followed with a scoop slam, a knee drop and then the suplex for the victory.
-----
SoCal Val catches up with Tamina Snuka in the back. Jones brought her into WCW but has done little to guide her career after losing the WCW U.S. Women’s Title. The Powers of Fear got so fed up with him after losing the WCW Trios Titles that they left for the NWA. Maybe she’ll split too. Maria Kannellis-Bennett then pops up and tells Snuka not to be so hasty. Let’s talk about the women’s wrestler opening in the nWo. They walk off.

The Rock ‘n Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson) defeated The Garvin Brothers (Terry and Jimmy) with Precious by pinfall of Morton on Terry via double dropkick on Terry at 12:21. Garvins attack the Express after and leave them lying.
-----
Kevin Owens and Kurt Angle are on the interview stage together. They have a match at Clash of Champions with the winner advancing to the Elimination Chamber at Phoenix Rising. However, Angle has had Owens back lately in his ongoing feud with the nWo. Angle knows the nWo is a poison to WCW, but, more than that, Angle wants Owens at his best come Clash of the Champions. He doesn’t want to defeat an Owens beaten down and laid low by the nWo. One of the three I’s is integrity and that won’t let him do it. Owens thanks Angle for his help and he promises to give 110% in their match. They then argue over how you can’t give more than 100%, but Owens waves it off and says that’s not important.

Tracy Smothers defeated Sir William Regal by pinfall via sunset flip at 12:37. Regal grabbed the ropes to block the sunset flip, but referee Tommy Young knocks his hands away and Smothers takes him over. Regal throws a royal fit after the match on the loss.
-----
SoCal Val has WCW U.S. Champion Rick Martel on the interview stage. Nick Aldis and Mickie James have the night off. He doesn’t doubt that they are trying to rekindle their romance, but no matter what sweet nothings Aldis might be whispering in her ear, James will be thinking of Rick Martel, because when you’ve had the best, you won’t settle for the rest. Martel asks what Val is doing later, he might be able to fit her between two of the Nitro Girls.

“Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff and Madusa Miceli with Col. Robert Fuller defeated “Macho Man” Randy Savage and Lady Frost by pinfall of Miceli on Frost via bridging German suplex at 12:43. Fuller pulled Savage’s ankle from the apron to prevent a tag, because Savage drops to the floor and goes after him. Orndorff attacks Savage from behind while the finish happens in the ring. Savage chases the heels off after and checks on Frost.
-----
SoCal Val has “Stunning” Steve Austin on the interview stage and he recaps the friendship and tag team he had in the past with Brian Pillman. But that all goes out the window at Clash of Champions as they both want in that Elimination Chamber at Phoenix Rising and get the WCW World Heavyweight Title. Brian Pillman Jr. surprisingly comes out and tells Austin he never liked “Uncle Steve,” who teased him when he came over to the house. Austin calls him a little boy and tells him to run along. He’s not a little boy anymore and he’ll prove it to Austin in that ring right now, if he’s man enough.

“Stunning” Steve Austin defeated Brian Pillman Jr. by pinfall via Stun Gun and a handful of tights at 8:20. Pillman Sr. runs out after to scare Austin off from any further beatdown.

Chris Jericho and Curt Hennig are on the interview stage with SoCal Val and demand Jake Roberts and Black Mamba come out. Roberts appears on the Shane-O-Tron and says he and Mamba aren’t there tonight, Roberts is videoing in remotely. He believes if Jericho can show up whenever he feels like it, Roberts can too. Maybe he’ll be there next week, maybe he won’t. Jericho will probably be off wherever claiming to do UWA work, when he’s really scared of being near Jake and Black Mamba. Jericho says he doesn’t believe Roberts for one minute and he’s probably just in the back. Well, Roberts only half lied. Black Mamba then appears out of nowhere and attacks Hennig and Jericho from behind and leaves them lying with choke slams. Roberts cackles with laughter from the Shane-O-Tron.

The nWo (Hulk Hogan, Tony Atlas, Killer Kross, Eli Drake and Mike Bennett) with Maria Kannellis-Bennett defeated Dusty Rhodes, Ronnie Garvin, Sam Houston, Owen Hart and Jim Neidhart by pinfall of Kross on Houston via Saito Suplex at 11:31. Everyone gets a chance to shine and get some signature moves in. It dissolves into a brawl and in the chaos, Hogan nails Houston in the back of the head with Maria’s hairspray can, letting Kross get the drop on him.
