"Heavyweight Grand Prix, Night One"
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Joey Styles and Jeremy Borash welcome all of the fans to the first night of the Heavyweight tournament to crown the first champion. We see vignettes for the different match ups and weigh ins for the evening and then get to the ring.
Match One
Bronson Reed vs. Rush
These two are both powerful guys, but the edge went to Rush when it came to killer instinct. Rush has yet to lose a match in IPW and it is because of his unique mixture of power, speed, and prowess, along with a great look and charisma. Rush is able to hit the Bull's Horn to get the pinfall and advance.
Match Teo
Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Chris Candido
Two former partners did battle here, and while Bam Bam certainly had the size advantage, Candido is a very crafty veteran and picked his spots well. Candido would try to use underhanded tactics to overcome the "Beast From the East", but would end up eating a Greetings from Asbury Park in the end, allowing Bam Bam to move on in the tournament.
Match Three
Lance Storm vs. Perry Saturn
Perry Saturn was recently fined for misconduct in the ring, and he's had a lot of attitude problems as of late. He doesn't seem to care and this match furthered that narrative. Storm said he was going to teach Saturn some respect in the build up. Saturn would lock Storm in a Guillotine Choke at one point, which Storm would get to the ropes to break, only Saturn wouldn't break it, so the referee disqualified him and Lance Storm advances!
Saturn looked like he might attack the referee when Commissioner Dan Severn stepped in and went nose to nose with him! "The Beast" got on the mic and said Saturn was suspended until further notice! Saturn looked like he might physically attack Severn but decided to turn and leave, looking enraged.
Match Four
Curt Hennig vs. Tommy Dreamer
Hennig would call Dreamer a loser and an untalented hack in the build up to this. Dreamer said he may not have the background or pedigree of Hennig, but he is a man of violence and would make Hennig's night a long one. Dreamer would manage to get some big shots in on "Mr. Perfect" in this match and the fans were well behind him, but Hennig would manage a roll up while putting his feet on the ropes for extra leverage to advance!
Hennig looked very proud of himself in his post match interview, saying it doesn't matter what happened leading up to the end, the only thing that matters is the result, and the result is that Curt Hennig is still "Mr. Perfect" and he will soon be the Heavyweight champion, whether anybody likes it or not!
Match Five
Rob Van Dam vs. Sabu
These two long time friends and rivals put on a great show for these fans. Sabu seemed like he had been more mentally prepared for this and seemed more animalistic in this match than in previous outings in IPW. RVD would try to use a Van Daminator late in the match, but Sabu ducked it and smashed him with the chair before coming off the top with the Arabian Skullcrusher for the win in what might be seen as an upset tonight!
Match Six
Davey Boy Smith vs. William Regal
"The British Bulldog" would put a hurting on Regal early, using his speed and power to rock the Blackpool native, but eventually Regal would manage to deliver a low blow and slow things down to a grinding halt, where he could inflict ground and pound damage. Regal had said in the build up that Smith was all muscles and no brains and he would tear him apart cerebrally but "The Bulldog" made that tough, establishing a pretty could comeback and nearly hitting his Running Powerslam. However, Regal would slide out of it and hit a Dragon Suplex, followed by the Regal Stretch to get the submission and move on in the tournament.
Match Seven
Chris Benoit vs. Owen Hart
Benoit would come out fast and furious in this one, taking Hart down and then beating on him, attempting many falls early and the fans were solidly behind Benoit. Hart would manage to use the energy and zeal of Benoit against him, catching Benoit with a reversal on the outside and sending him into the turn post. Hart would punish Benoit on the outside and then send him back into the ring, working over his back and mocking him on obnoxiously. Hart would lock on a Sharpshooter, but Benoit would manage to reverse into a roll up for a two count. Hart would manage to avoid a Diving Headbutt and rolled Benoit up afterward, holding the tights to get the win!
Hart would celebrate like he just won the Stanley Cup and Benoit flew into a fit of rage, bulling him over from behind with a firearm to send him out of the ring before he could be interviewed! The fans cheered this but Commissioner Severn hit the ring and told Benoit to get out of there and that he would deal with him later!
Match Eight
Kenta Kobashi vs. Mitsuharu Misawa
Now this was one hell of a main event to close the show, and these fans here in Pittsburgh got a special treat. These two have had many classic battles and five star matches, and they came to tear the house down tonight. Misawa would manage to send Kobashi to the floor and dive into him through the ropes with an elbow. Kobashi would catch Misawa with a half Nelson Suplex on the floor, which looked like it might kill him. These two would battle on the apron and Misawa would manage to deliver a Tiger Suplex to Kobashi off the apron to the floor! Back in the ring, these would exchange blows before Kobashi would deliver a series of chops to take back momentum. Kobashi would try for a Lariat but Misawa would duck and deliver a Rolling Elbow for a two count. Misawa would hit a Tiger Driver, but still a two count.
Kobashi would manage to escape a Tiger Suplex attempt and deliver a Spinning Back Chop, followed by a Folding Powerbomb, but only a two count! Kobashi would slam Misawa and call for the end, heading up top for a Moonsault, but Misawa would get up and rush the buckles, grabbing Kobashi and hitting a Super German Suplex! Misawa would for the cover, but Kobashi still kicked out somehow. Misawa would pick up Kobashi, signalling for the end and attempted the Emerald Flowsion, but Kobashi would slide off and pull him backwards, delivering the Burning Sword chop!
Kobashi would pick up Misawa and try for a Brainbuster but Misawa blocked it. Misawa would elbow Kobashi repeatedly and then try for another Rolling Elbow, but Kobashi would catch him with a spin kick to the gut, followed by a Burning Lariat! Misawa is done and Kobashi has the leg hooked, but still just a two count. Kobashi can't believe it, but he knows he has to keep going. He tries for another Powerbomb but Misawa reverses into a Sunset Flip for a two count. Both men are back up and Misawa delivers an Enzuigiri, staggering Kobashi. Misawa grabs him from behind and takes him over with a Tiger Suplex but still a two count!
Misawa is up and calling for the fans to get behind him and they are cheering, everyone on their feet. Misawa grabs Kobashi and is looking for a Tiger Driver maybe, but Kobashi blocks it. Misawa let's go and pounds on Kobashi, but Kobashi explodes to chops, sending Misawa is the corner and probably chopping him twenty times, getting a roar from the fans! Kobashi pulls Misawa out of the corner and yells, attempting another Burning Lariat but Misawa ducks it and grabs him from behind, looking for a German Suplex, but Kobashi blocks it and elbows his way out. Kobashi turns and tries for the Lariat again, but Misawa ducks and delivers a brutal elbow to Kobashi right on the button!
Kobashi staggers into the ropes and Misawa grabs him, scooping him up and drills him to the mat with the Emerald Flowsion! Misawa lamely hooks the leg, but it doesn't matter! It's all over! Misawa advances in the tournament!
In the post match, Misawa has his translator say that Kobashi is perhaps his greatest rival and it means a lot to beat him, but it's going to mean even more to finally have American gold around his waist and world wide recognition. He says he might not look like much when you see guys like Bam Bam and Curt Hennig, but he says he just showed everyone he can fight like no one else and he won't stop fighting until he has the gold around his waist and he can be the true greatest champion of IPW!
The fans give him a great ovation as the show comes to an end.
