UPW "Bad Blood" Results: 08/26/2023 from Oakland, CA
UPW arrives in the Bay Area for the first time, and the theme for this event is from Bay Area thrash metal legends, the appropriately titled "Raining Blood" by Slayer to kick us off for Bad Blood!
Undisputed Era vs. "Speedball" Mike Bailey & Tyson Kidd
Bobby Fish and Roderick Strong are representing the Undisputed Era here. Bailey and Kidd look good against the more seasoned team, but their partner Kyle O'Reily on the outside kicks "Speedball" into the crowd. Pure Champion Josh Alexander runs out and gets into it with his opponent later, O'Reilly, distracting referee Chris Sharpe so Roderick could low blow Kidd, and he and Fish hit a Sick Kick/Legsweep on the Canadian star to get the three count.
Winners: Undisputed Era
Buddy Matthews Will Defend Against All Comers
Buddy Matthews is backstage, and the Premier Champion says he wasn't surprised when he heard "Switchblade" Jay White wasn't going to make it here tonight. He said he wasn't surprised Jay White would delay the ass kicking of his life, and he says he commends Zack Sabre for stepping up like a real man, but it isn't going to matter. He says he doesn't care who he stands across from, because he will defend his pride, his name, his heritage, and his title against any man, and he will stand tall in the end! OATH!
Oney Lorcan vs. Ilja Dragunov
30 Minute Time Limit
Lorcan and Dragunov pick up right where they left off last month, where they wrestled to a 20 minute time limit draw at Extreme Heat. These two brutalized each other, but unlike their previous bout, this one ended up spilling to the outside of the ring. Lorcan would knock Dragunov out of the ring with a big running boot as the timekeeper announced 5 minutes remaining, and then flew out onto him through the ropes, crashing him into the railing. These two would fight on the outside until Dragunov rocked the Boston star and then CRASHED into him with the Torpedo Moscow, smashing him through the railing! Dragunov would drag himself up and roll back in under the ropes before referee Rudy Charles could make the twenty count. Lorcan would not make it. Dragunov gets the count out win.
Winner (by Count Out): Ilja Dragunov
Notable Moments and Observations
• Both men were bleeding pretty good in this contest.
• Lorcan is beside himself after this, with his CatchPoint teammates trying to console him to no avail. For what it's worth, Ilja doesn't seem very satisfied with this victory, either.
Brody King vs. Rush
This match has been brewing for almost months now between the leaders of VLNCE UNLTD and Los Ingobernales, respectively. This was a hard hitting contest, as expected, but the bigger Brody King was more dominant throughout, and would toy with Rush at times to play mind games with him. Rush would make a come back and hit a big Gore on King, leading King's teammates Chris Dickinson and Tony Deppen to hit the ring and try to interfere. Rush would duck, dodge, punch, and throw his assailants, leading to his brothers grabbing them on the outside. King would take advantage and kick Rush and try for the All Seeing Eye, but Rush would escape and shove King into the corner and deliver a Running Double Dropkick to his back! Rush follows up with another Gore, and "El Toro Blanco" gets the pinfall!
Winner: Rush
Logan Paul Has Arrived!
Blake Howard introduces social media influencer/celebrity boxing bad boy Logan Paul next on the stage, and the crowd here in the Oakland Arena greet him with a massive cacophony of boos! Logan Paul says that he is here to make UPW great, and the way to do that is to feature more Logan Paul! The fans do not care for that at all. Paul says that UPW will never be the same, and he's happy they all get to see him, and they all better get used to it!
Chris Dijak vs. Lance Archer
These two big guys were ready to settle some business. Dijak has been out of action after being suspended for attacking Jay White and Lance Archer after they abandoned him during a six man tag team match with TMDK. Dijak has been itching to get his hands on Archer, and Archer has been taunting him for the last few weeks to only exacerbate the situation. This match didn't go long, and would end up spilling to the outside. Referee Adrian Butler would try to get control, but the two near seven footers would fight up the ramp. Dijak looked like he was going to Chokeslam the big Texan off the stage, but Archer gouges his eyes and then headbutts him! Dijak is staggering, and Archer bull rushes him and BLASTS him with a Pounce Shoulderblock, sending Dijak flying off the stage and through two tables! Butler has seen enough and calls for the bell!
No Contest
Notable Moments and Observations
• After the match, Lance Archer runs and chases Adrian Butler off like a madman! One of the fans is giving Archer a piece of their mind, and he grabs him and yanks him over the railing! Kevin Kelly is flabbergasted on commentary! Security are very careful trying to deal with "The American Psycho" as he leaves, and Dijak is being attended to by medical staff stage side.
The Olympian Chad Gable is Coming to UPW!
We get a video montage for incoming wrestler Chad Gable, who talks about his talents and accolades. He says there aren't many men who could last 6 minutes with him in Greco Roman competition, and he knows he can beat any man in UPW in that amount of time. He says we should all prepare to be inspired!
UPW Pure Championship
Josh Alexander © vs. Kyle O'Reilly
These two got into it earlier in the show during the opener on the outside, but now it was time to put up or shut up. There is no interference to be tolerated, and with only three rope breaks and no closed fists, it was time to find out not only who the best pure wrestler is between these two, but who is the superior Canadian. These two put on a great technical wrestling clinic. O'Reilly worked the arm of "The Walking Weapon" throughout, but Alexander refused to give up. O'Reilly would get rope breaks with the Kimura and Cross Armbar. O'Reilly would force Alexander to use his last rope break with a Triangle Choke. Alexander would go attempt to lift O'Reilly into the C4 Spike, but his left arm would give out and O'Reilly would take advantage. O'Reilly would lock him into the Cross Armbar once more, and Alexander would get his foot on the bottom rope, but referee Chad Patton would not enforce the break. Alexander had nowhere to go and refused to tap, so O'Reilly would get a crazed look in his eye and snap upward with his pelvis and Alexander would scream out like his arm was broken! Corey Graves says Alexander is too tough for his own good and now he just had his arm broken as Patton dives on the hold to break it up and calls for the bell. We have a new Pure Champion, but Josh Alexander showed he is as tough as it comes.
Winner, and NEW UPW Pure Champion: Kyle O'Reilly
Zack Sabre Jr. Says It Should Have Been Him All Along
Backstage, Blake Howard asks newly named Premier Title challenger Zack Sabre Jr. how he feels tonight heading into this title match with Buddy Matthews on short notice. Sabre says he doesn't prepare for his opponents, his opponents prepare for him, and if anybody's been paying attention, they'd know it should have been him in this match all along! He just won a bloody two out of three falls match over Tim Thatcher a couple of weeks, what the hell has Jay White done recently? Bullocks, that's what! Fuck all! He says Buddy Matthews wishes he could've dealt with that tosser again, because he already beat him. That'd have been an easy night. Now he's got the longest night of his life to look forward to here in Oakland.
Notable Moments and Observations
• The Undisputed Era stand tall in the ring, with O'Reilly in the center with his new title belt around his waist as Alexander is helped to the back by officials with a towel and ice bag over his left arm. Alexander is yelling out in agony and anger as he is escorted to the back while the Undisputed Era are arrogantly celebrating a very successful night.
UPW Tag Team Championship
British Strong Style © vs. TMDK
This was a fantastic back and forth battle, as was expected. It was noted that Mikey Nicholls got a singles win over Tyler Bate last week, and British Strong Style seemed bound and determined to get that win back tonight. These two teams would go back and forth for 15 minutes, with both teams getting near falls, until Tyler Bate would make a mistake and try to dive out onto Nicholls, only to get side stepped and crash into the railing. Back in the ring, "The Bruiserweight" Pete Dunne tries to fight both of the Australian superstars himself, instigating the double team, only to get slammed with the Thunder Valley, but Dunne wouldn't stay down. They set him up for the Tank Buster, but Bate is back up on the apron and attacks Shane Thorne on the middle turnbuckle. Dunne gets off of Nicholls shoulders and then shoves him into the ropes, following up with a Running European Uppercut that sends both men out to the floor! Bate would try for a Superplex, but Thorne would punch him off and send him back onto the mat. From there, Shane Thorne flew off the top with the Phoenix Splash, and it was all over! TMDK are the new champions!
Winner, and NEW UPW Tag Team Champions: TMDK
Darby Allin vs. John Morrison
No Disqualification Match
John Morrison really milks the entrance on this one, showing Darby Allin absolutely no respect. As he is strutting around the ring and pulling down his robe, showing off his abs as the lights are low, into the ring slides CM PUNK! Punk has a chair in hand, and Kevin Kelly yells that he's about to get some retribution! BANG! Punk blasts Morrison in the back with a chair shot that sounds like a shotgun blast, and the fans are going nuts here in Oakland chanting "CM PUNK! CM PUNK! CM PUNK!" Punk looks at referee Rudy Charles and tells him to ring the damn bell. Punk then walks off up the ramp as Darby Allin delivers the Coffin Drop to the ailing Morrison, and the match is over in about 10 seconds. Darby Allin spits on Morrison as he writhes in pain on the mat, and the fans are buzzing with excitement, chanting "JOHNNY SUCKS!" as Morrison has to make the walk of shame to the back.
Winner: Darby Allin
UPW Paramount Championship
Shinsuke Nakamura © vs. Jay Lethal
Jay Lethal has been desperate to get championship gold, but he had a tough task ahead of him to try to take down the Paramount champion Nakamura. "The King of Strong Style" would play mind games with Lethal early, not immediately engaging and mocking him, not wanting to let Lethal get going too early. Kevin Kelly notes that Paramount Title matches are only contested with a 15 minute time limit, and that the champion is eating up a lot of that with his antics, knowing he has to be beaten, not the other way around, in order for the title to change hands. Nakamura would go to the outside and strut around, jawing with the crowd and doing his fidgety sort of dancing, and Lethal has seen enough. Lethal follows and tries to engage Nakamura, but that was a bit of a mistake. Nakamura would send Lethal into the turn post, busting his head open! Nakamura would target the forehead, and seemed to really enjoy causing Lethal pain, raking his bleeding forehead at one point as he pressed him against the middle rope, sticking out his tongue and gyrating as the fans boo him! Lethal manages to fight back and goes to the top and tries for a Flying Elbowdrop, but Nakamura turns and catches him into a Triangle Choke! Nakamura blasts him with downward elbows, but Lethal rolls him up and referee Chris Sharpe counts to two before Nakamura rolls and gets Lethal into a pinning combination! Kevin Kelly points out that Lethal's boots are under the botom rope, but Corey Graves shouts out that Sharpe doesn't see it, and Nakamura gets the three count!
Winner, and STILL UPW Paramount Champion: Shinsuke Nakamura
Notable Moments and Observations
• Lethal and his Foundation partners are with the referee after the match about his foot being on the ropes, but Sharpe just says he didn't see it and there's nothing he can do about it now as Nakamura laughs all the way to the back with his title belt in hand. Lethal deflates, his face covered in blood, and it takes about 60 seconds for Jonathan Gresham and Josh Woods to talk him to the back. Kevin Kelly says that he feels for the unfortunate turn of events that Lethal has suffered in his two title attempts thus far. Corey Graves says that this is the business, and maybe he's not made of the right stuff to be a champion if he can't deal with it.
UPW X Divison Championship
Shane "Swerve" Strickland © vs. Cameron Grimes vs. Ricochet
This was a wild spot fest of a match, and the fans were into it due to the build. Grimes got a pinfall in a three way tag team match over the champion last week, and tried desperately to get he pinfall here tonight by any means necessary. That would not be the case, however, as Ricochet would deliver the Recoil to nearly decapitate him towards the end. Ricochet would try for the cover, thinking he had the title won, but "Swerve" would fly off the top with the Swerve Stomp to his back, crushing both men! Ricochet rolls off of Grimes and to the outside in pain, and Strickland gets the pinfall back over Grimes to retain his championship.
Winner, and STILL UPW X Division Champion: Shane "Swerve" Strickland
Out Comes Logan Paul to Shake Things Up!
Buddy Matthews and Zack Sabre Jr. are in the ring for the main event when Logan Paul's music hits! Logan Paul says he's here to spice things up for the better, and when he saw this was the main event, he knew it wasn't going to cut it! He says there's only one man he's been impressed with all night, and he's adding him to this match, effective immediately, because he's the owner now and he can do whatever the hell he wants! He then introduces "The American Psycho" Lance Archer, and Corey Graves laughs and cheers on commentary, shouting that this just got interesting! Kevin Kelly says he can't believe they are letting this guy back out here after what he did earlier in the night.
UPW Premier Championship
Buddy Matthews © vs. Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Lance Archer
Archer just changed the entire complexion of this contest. What was sure to be a technical back and forth classic just turned into pure chaos, as the mountain of a man Archer came in like a Texas tornado to stir things up. Archer would send both of his opponents flying around the ring early, running around and striking with reckless abandon. Archer would toss Matthews to the outside and follow him out. Sabre would jump off the apron and grab him into a Sleeper hold. Matthews would kick his leg out and then both men would run and deliver Penalty Kicks to either side of the big man! Sabre would then turn on Matthews, sending a big kick into his head and sending him back into the ring. Matthews reverses a Penalty Kick attempt into a Half Crab, and then transitions into an STF, and Kevin Kelly notes that the Premier Champion is showing technical prowess of his own on the "Technical Wizard"! Archer, though, goes to the top rope and flies into the ring with a chair and smashes Matthews with it! Referee Chad Patton grabs the chair and gets in Archer's face, and Graves says that he must not value his life, as Archer grabs him by the throat and tosses him through the ropes to the outside! There's no referee now, as Archer picks up the chair and whacks Sabre over the head with it! Archer then throws the chair into Matthews into the corner, knocking him loopy. Archer picks up the relatively diminutive Sabre and delivers the Death Penalty (Inverted Razor's Edge) and covers him with his knees on his chest and abdomen. Out to the ring runs LOGAN PAUL, AND HE'S IN A REFEREE'S SHIRT! Kevin Kelly calls him a no good son of a bitch and Corey Graves can't believe his broadcast partner's language as he cheers on Archer and Paul! Paul goes to make the three count, but Matthews flies in out of nowhere and clips Archer with a BEAUTIFUL Running Bicycle Kneestrike to seemingly knock out the big man and break up the fast count! Paul and Matthews go face to face, and Matthews grabs Paul by the shirt and rips it down the middle! Paul is incensed, and winds back, looking for a big right hand haymaker, but Matthews ducks it and shoves him out of the ring! Sabre is picking himself up on the ropes and Matthews runs and delivers a Bicycle Kneestrike that sends the English star to the floor! Archer staggers up and then runs at Matthews, but Matthews ducks down and counters, lifting Archer and spinning him with a variation of the Whale Hunt! Matthews hooks the leg and Chad Patton rolls back in, and slowly makes the three count! Buddy Matthews gets the victory!
Winner, and STILL UPW Premier Champion: Buddy Matthews
Notable Moments and Observations
• After the match, Matthews's TMDK teammates come down and all three men pose with their championships as Logan Paul holds his head and stares at the ring, looking very displeased. Matthews gets on the ropes and tells Paul to stay out of his damn business as the show comes to an end.
