NWA Championship Wrestling taped Tuesday, June 20th and broadcasted on Saturday, June 24th at 10 AM on ESPN.
The show kicks off with highlights of the National Wrestling Alliance Champions in action before going to the desk and Gordon Solie. Solie briefly discusses today's show and announces that the winner of the main event between “Dirty” Dick Slater and the “Universal Heartthrob” Austin Idol will be the top contender for the United States Heavyweight Championship, currently held by Greg “the Hammer” Valentine. Solie also reminds the viewers that the next pay-per-view broadcast, Beach Party Beatdown, is scheduled for tonight from the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida. Solie then announces that NWA Championship Wrestling will be changing networks next week as it will now be broadcast on the Superstation WTBS at 6:05 PM on Saturday evenings and taped from the WTBS Sports Arena in Atlanta, Georgia every Saturday morning at 10 AM. Solie then sends the show to the ring for the first match of the day.
Stan “the Lariat” Hansen vs. “Chief” Wahoo McDaniel
… McDaniel connects with a stiff chop to Hansen’s chest, which has been beaten to a bright red. Hansen responds with a right hand, but McDaniel quickly throws another chop. Both men trade shots back and forth until the Minnesota Wrecking Crew hit the ring. Ole attacks McDaniel from behind, driving him into the corner. Gene & Lars begin pummeling Hansen, who tries to fire back but is quickly overwhelmed. McDaniel is now slumped in the corner as Ole begins stomping his chest. “Cowboy” Bill Watts rushes to the ring and quickly spins Ole around and drops him with a right hand. Ole is back up quickly but reeling as Watts peppers him with right hands, sending him back into the corner. Gene unloads a forearm to the upper back of Watts and catches him with a kick to the gut as he turns. Ole follows up with a knee lift and both men are soon stomping on Watts. Bruiser Brody now rushes to the ring with a chain and the Minnesota Wrecking Crew begin their retreat. Brody swings the chain wildly from the center of the ring, screaming at the Andersons as they head for the dressing room.
Solie welcomes an infuriated Bruiser Brody and a beaten Stan Hansen to the desk and quickly asks about Hansen’s condition considering his match this evening at Beach Party Beatdown in Tampa, where he and Brody will be defending their World Tag Team Championships against the Road Warriors. Brody impatiently answers “Road Warriors… we all know tonight is going to be a battle in Tampa and Stan & I expect nothing less… but Andersons… you’re some new kind of cowards… you want to jump the Cowboy and the Chief… so be it… I know them boys can handle themselves… but attacking Stan and talking about challenging us for the World Tag Team Championships is biting off a bit more than I think you boys can chew right now… but I’m going to call your bluff… right here… right now… Two of yous are going to face Watts & McDaniel tonight for those US Tag straps and the two of us are going to beat Hawk & Animal… and then… you can have your shot… that’s right… after the dust settles in Tampa, we gon’ ring the bell one more time… two of y’all against the two of us… World Tag Team Championships to the winners!”. Brody & Hansen leave as Solie reiterates the challenge to the Minnesota Wrecking Crew before sending the show to commercial break.
Solie welcomes the viewers back from the break and reminds them that NWA Championship Wrestling will be changing networks next week as it will now be broadcast on the Superstation WTBS at 6:05 PM on Saturday evenings and taped from the WTBS Sports Arena in Atlanta, Georgia every Saturday morning at 10 AM. Solie then welcomes “Playboy” Gary Hart to the desk and Hart announces that he has secured a contract for a match to feature the debut of the Great Muta for tonight at Beach Party Beatdown at the Amalie Arena in Tampa against the winner of the next match. Solie then sends the show to the ring to find out who will face the Great Muta later tonight.
Larry Zbyszko vs. “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert
>Winner: Zbyszko (8:56) with a swinging neckbreaker
Solie welcomes the Worlds Heavyweight Champion “Magnificent” Don Muraco to the desk and asks the Champion about his match this evening against former Worlds Heavyweight Champion and now the new United States Heavyweight Champion Greg “the Hammer” Valentine. Muraco smiles before answering Solie, “Mr. Solie, I know exactly what to expect tonight in Tampa… in fact, I know Greg Valentine all too well… you see he has become something of a poor man’s excuse for something Magnificent… Valentine has decided to copy my ascension to the Worlds Heavyweight Championship… and there are few things we have in common… I know Valentine is former Champion and I’m the current Champion… and therefore he’s a top contender and so was I before I won this gold… now he has gone as far as to capture the US Heavyweight Championship and I was the United States Heavyweight Champion when I won the Worlds Heavyweight Championship… but that is where the similarities end… and end badly for Greg Valentine because I’m not losing to the US Champion… I’m not losing to a top contender… and I’m not losing to a former Champion… I refuse to be a former Champion… imitation is the best form of flattery so try doing everything I did to attain this Championship… train harder… train longer… train faster… bring JJ… bring Bob… bring whatever you can find in the back… hell, bring a hammer… cause you’re going to need it Valentine”. Muraco walks away as Solie reminds the viewers that Beach Party Beatdown will be this evening at the Amalie Arena in Tampa.
