AEW Dynamite: Beach Break
Jan. 25, 2023
The show opens with a preview of this week’s big events — including Beach Break and this weekend’s Battle of the Belts. The promo ends with a package on Jeff Jarrett and Jon Moxley both saying they’re the man to end Chris Jericho’s brief reign this weekend.
The camera pans across the crowd, who goes wild when UWA Men’s World Champion Chris Jericho’s music hits, and out walks the champ, with the UWA Belt across his waist. He has a mic, welcomes fans to Dynamite is JERICHO and says that doesn’t sound quite right. He’s excited to be here today, and looks forward to wiping the smile off Jeff Jarrett or Jon Moxley’s face on Saturday. He heads to the announce table to commentate during their match.
Match 1 - UWA World Title Contendership match
Jeff Jarrett (9-3) w/ JBL vs. Jon Moxley (2-2)
Jarrett stays wary of Mox, who constantly pursues Jarrett. Mox eventually gets frustrated and lunges toward Jarrett, who dodges into a drop toe hold and locks in an STF. Jarrett works on keeping Mox down, using the ropes for leverage until the ref sees him. Mox hits a quick Cutter and locks in an armbar. They reverse each other’s moves on the mat until Jarrett pokes Mox in the eyes and follows that up with a snap suplex and a swinging neckbreaker before locking in the Figure Four.
He keeps the hold for a long time, until Mox is eventually able to turn it over, after a lot of damage was done. Jarrett continues attacking the legs with a variety of chop blocks and leg holds and goes for another Figure Four, until Mox reverses that into a roll-up for 2. As they both stand, Jarrett rushes toward Mox straight into a Paradigm Shift. Mox goes for a pin, but Jarrett is just able to get his foot on the ropes.
Jarrett rolls out of the ring to recover, while on the other side of the ring, JBL gets up on the apron and starts yelling at the ref. Jarrett reaches under the mat and pulls out an acoustic guitar. He slides in the ring and gets ready to smash Mox over the head, but Jericho also slides into the ring and grabs the guitar from Jarrett! He marches over and gets the ref’s attention and points back to the action in the ring. Jericho smashes JBL in the head with the guitar!
Jarrett recovers and hits Mox with the Stroke! He goes for the pinfall…1…2…Mox kicks out! Mox hits the Midnight, and over the shoulder belly-back piledriver, for a nearfall of his own. Both men are exhausted. When they get to their feet they exchange punches until Mox gets the upper hand with a spinning side slam. He lifts Jarrett up again and hits another Paradigm Shift in the middle of the ring. This time, he gets the pinfall and the win at 18:53.
After the match, Jericho enters the ring and extends his hand. Mox asks why he helped out, and Jericho replied that he just wanted to see the best man earn the win the right way. Plus he’s tired of that weasel, Jeff Jarrett, cheating his way to the top. Mox nods his head, but doesn’t shake his hand. He tells Jericho that he’d better be ready for the fight of his life on Saturday.

Cody Rhodes comes out to the ring and calls for Goldberg to come out. He wants to settle things tonight. Goldberg stays on the stage and says that tonight isn’t the night. These Miami fans don’t deserve to see Goldberg wrestle. But at Revolution? Goldberg will walk out as AEW Champion. Cody says he’s ready whenever, wherever, when Tony Khan pops up on the screen. He likes the sound of that: Cody Rhodes vs. Bill Goldberg at Revolution. But Cody hasn’t had a title defense in over a month now. Before the match can be finalized, Cody will have to defend the belt on next week’s Dynamite against the winner of tonight’s match between Sammy Guevara and MVP.

Match 2 - All-Atlantic Championship match: Samoa Joe © (3-2) vs. Gable Steveson (9-1)
Joe and Steveson have a physical match, filled with a variety of suplexes. They start off with big moves — Joe hits a belly-to-belly; Steveson a fireman’s carry; Joe hits a signature twisting Enziguri, followed by his Chimera-plex. Then Steveson hits an early Olympic Slam, which Joe kicks out of at 1.
Things slow through the middle portion of the match as they start mat wrestling and trading armbars and headlocks back and forth until Steveson hits a surprise dropkick, and locks in an ankle lock, which Joe breaks at the ropes. Later, Joe applies the Coquina Clutch, but can’t get Steveson down. The former Olympian is able to get leverage on the ropes and pushes Joe over into a pinfall attempt, forcing Joe to break the hold.
At the 25 minute mark, an announcement went out reminding fans that there is a 30-minute time limit on championship matches on Dynamite. Immediately after this, both competitors tried picking up the pace. Joe hit a Muscle Buster and went for a pinfall. 1…2…no! Steveson popped up and hit his second Olympic Slam, then collapsed to the mat. The ref started a 10-count and both men got to their feet at 8 as the announcer said 1 minute remained. Steveson went for the double-leg takedown, but Joe resisted. They got to their feet. The clock was at 20 seconds. Steveson rushed toward Joe to make something happen, but the veteran side-stepped him and locked in another Coquina Clutch, taking Steveson to the mat. Time expired for a 30-minute, time limit draw. Joe refused to break the hold as the ref tried pulling him off. Steveson tried fighting his way out of it, but eventually passed out. Joe finally let go, then got up and walked away with the belt.

Sammy Guevara and Tay Melo are backstage. Sammy questions her about last week’s interaction with MVP, and wants to know what she’s doing. She shrugs him off and walks off.

Match 3 - Big E Langston (4-0) w/ New Day vs. Brian Cage (8-3) w/ Natural Selection
Big E and Cage had a big hoss fight with both guys continuously clubbing on each other. Cage gets the upper hand after Shelton Benjamin trips up Langston, and Cage hits an early Drill Claw that Big E kicks out of. E hits a running body block and follows it up with the Big Ending for a nearfall of his own.
Outside the ring, Benjamin and Alexander attack the New Day out of nowhere. While Big E is distracted, Cage hits another Drill Claw and gets the pinfall at 8:23.

After the match, Natural Selection is informed that they’ll be defending their tag team championships against the New Day during the debut of AEW Rampage on Feb. 3.

Match 4 - UWA Tag Titles Contendership match
UWA Tag Team Champions FTR come to ringside for commentary
Steiner Bros. (9-1) vs. The Outsiders (3-1)
Rick and Hall start the match with a feeling out process that Hall gets the upper hand with a wristlock and shoulder blocks. He tags Nash in and whips Rick into a big boot, then he hits a sidewalk slam and a backbreak. Nash and Hall controlled Rick for a while, until he elbowed Hall and got to his brother for the hot tag.
Scott Steiner rushed in and clotheslined both opponents down, then hit a belly-to-belly suplex on Hall and body slammed Nash and hit an elbow drop. Nash rolled out of the ring for a breather and walked over to the announce table and grabbed Dax Harwood’s glass of water. Harwood stood and slapped it out of Nash’s hand. Nash responded with a slap to Harwood’s face. Before Harwood could respond, Cash Wheeler backed him off.
The action returned to the ring, where the match ended after Hall tried hitting Rick Steiner with a bat, but Rick ducked and Hall hit Nash instead. Rick tossed Hall from the ring, then hit a bulldog on Nash and scored the pinfall at 10:45 to earn the chance to face FTR on Saturday.

After the break, Taz is in the ring with the FTW Championship belt. He calls out Hook, who comes reluctantly and reiterates he doesn’t want to be handed anything. Taz replies that he’s proud of his son, and he’ll get the chance to earn the belt on Saturday in a falls count anywhere triple threat match against Raven and Malakai Black.

Main Event: Dynamite Diamond Ring Final: Sammy Guevara (11-4) w/ Tay Melo vs. MVP (2-0)
Guevara seems distracted at the start of the match, which allows MVP to get the upper hand with a facebreaker into his knee, then a powerslam. Guevara tries kicking him in the stomach, but MVP catches it and hits a Dragon Screw takedown. MVP whips Guevara into the corner, then hits a running big boot into Guevara, who crumples to the bottom turnbuckle. MVP follows it up with a running knee to the face, then pulls Guevara away into a pinning attempt that gets 1.
Melo on the outside of the ring moves around to MVP’s corner. He looks quizzically over to her, then continues the offensive with a Playmaker, followed by the Ballin’ Elbow. He looks over to Melo, who smiles at him, before picking Guevara up for another Playmaker. This brings Melo to the apron, asking MVP to just pin Guevara instead of doing another move. Guevara uses the momentary distraction to spin out of the move and roll MVP up for a quick 2-count.
Guevara finally gets going with a springboard dropkick, followed by two more quick dropkicks. He DDTs MVP and locks in a crossface, but MVP won’t tap. Guevara hits a back suplex and a Standing shooting star press that gets another nearfall. He bounces off the ropes, but MVP pops up and hits The Play of the Day! (Leaping reverse STO). Then MVP is unable to make a pinning attempt right away. The ref checks on both men, and Melo slides in to check on them, too. She helps MVP to his feet. While Guevara is standing, he is talking to the ref and saying he thinks he broke his jaw. With the ref looking to Guevara, Melo kicks MVP in the groin, then slides out of the ring.
Guevara comes up behind MVP and hits the GTH before heading to the top rope and hitting the 630 senton splash. He pins MVP for the win at 14:52.
Melo comes into the ring to celebrate with Guevara and present him with the Dynamite Diamond Ring. They make out as MVP walks off, telling Guevara this isn’t the last time he’ll see MVP. The show ends with Melo admiring the ring on her finger.
