AEW Dynamite: Summer Smash - July 27, 2022
Live from Chicago, Illinois
We get a stylish intro package, with clips of some of tonight’s competitors facing off with each other during the build up to Summer Smash. We also get a brief recap of last week’s Fight for the Fallen tournament that saw Gable Steveson win to become the inaugural AEW All-Atlantic Champion.
Live shots of the crowd, then Jake Hager’s music hits to boos, and he grabs a microphone. “Welcome to Summer Smash, Chicago! My opponent tonight is going to be much like your beloved Chicago Cubs this season, a loser!” More boos. “Tony Khan wouldn’t tell me who I’m facing tonight, which only tells me that this opponent is a loser who needs all the advantages he can possibly have. So let’s get this party started!”
Music hits and the camera focuses on Hager in the ring. The crowd erupts as Hager’s opponent steps out, and Hager’s face falls.
Taz - “Oh. My! IT’S SAMOA JOE! Samoa Joe is All Elite!”
The crowd chants “Joe’s gonna kill you!” as the wrestling legend makes his way toward the ring with a scowl on his face.
Match 1: Jake Hager (2-2) vs. Samoa Joe (0-0)
Joe starts fast, while Hager bails. Eventually, Joe is able to get a hold of Hager and hits a few signature moves - Chimera-plex, Ura-nage and the Island Driver. Joe notches the win at 8:28 with the Coquina Clutch.

Before the next match, we see a recap of Matt Riddle and Jeff Cobb each losing to Jeff Jarrett in World Championship matches, as well as Beer Money costing them opportunities, and Cobb and Riddle talking about what they should name their team.
When Cobb and Riddle make their entrance together, they’re wearing shirts that say “The Chosen Bros”
Match 2: Beer Money (0-0) vs. The Chosen Bros (2-0)
Cobb and Roode start with power vs. power. The two teams have a good back-and-forth match. Riddle tags in and goes on a brief run before Storm and Roode start to wear him down, and Riddle gets steadily dismantled…until he gets a hot tag to Cobb, who unleashes a slew of suplexes and hits the Tour of the Islands on Roode for a 2-count. Later, while Roode is distracting the ref in the ring, Storm pulls Cobb off the ring apron and knocks him out by hitting him in the head with a 12-pack. Beer Money wins at 11:32 with the DWI, pinning Riddle.

Backstage, Paige VanZant is taping up her ankle to get ready for the Lights Out match later tonight. From offscreen, someone else says “Ew. That tape isn’t very flattering.” Paige looks up as the speaker walks into the screen. It’s Angelina Love, flanked by Velvet Sky and Madison Rayne - The Beautiful People.
Paige - “Who the hell are you?”
Angelina - “Who are we? As you should be able to tell by our looks, we are the Beautiful People, and we have finally decided to grace the AEW roster with our beauty. You might have had a chance to join us once, but after tonight, I don’t think you’ll be pretty enough any more.”
Paige stands up and gets nose to nose with Angelina. “I don’t have time for you right now. But after I end Serena Deeb, I might just have to make some time.”

Match 3: Winner’s Team gets Advantage at Blood & Guts (No DQ)
Konnan (0-0) vs. L.A. Park
The combatants had a physical brawl, and members of LAX and 5150 repeatedly interfered, with the remaining members of Los Parks and the New Day fighting them off when possible. Konnan got the win after Hernandez hit the Border Toss on Park, and Konnan locked in the Tequila Sunrise at 8:13.

We get a recap of the Steiners’ feud with the American Wolves, including clips of their previous match that saw Scott Steiner dominate Eddie Edwards at the end of the match.
Match 4: Tag Titles - Tornado Tag Team match
Steiner Bros © (3-0) vs. American Wolves (4-1)
Rick squares off with Eddie; Scott with Davey for most of the match. The Wolves constantly tried to chop down the stronger Steiners and hit them with dropkicks and highflying moves. The match turned when Rick rushed toward Eddie on the outside, only for Eddie to duck and trip Rick into the steel steps, knocking him out for a while. Eddie and Davey then double-teamed Scott in the ring. Davey locked in the 14:59 Keylock on Scott, while Eddie used a Figure Four. Scott was close to tapping out, but Rick came to his aid. The match ended with Rick hitting a bulldog from the top rope onto Davey, while Scott locked in the Steiner Recliner on Eddie, Rick got the pinfall at 13:46.

Match 5: Non-Title: Jade Cargill (8-0) vs. Rok-C (0-0)
Cargill defeats Rok-C at 2:12 with the Jaded Finisher. She grabs the mic afterward. “Once again, the Queen has won in short fashion. It just plain doesn’t matter who AEW finds to toss out at me, I’m always going to win…” She gets cut off by the static and the ticking clock. The clock ticks to midnight and the lights go out.
When the lights return, Alexa Bliss is in the ring with a big smile on her face, and the crowd pops. She is wearing white contact lenses. Alexa makes a move toward Jade, but the champion rolls out of the ring and walks to the back, while Alexa looks on with a smile.

Match 6: Cody Rhodes (3-2) vs. JBL (2-0) w/ Shawn Spears
Cody and JBL fought back-and-forth for a while. Cody hit the CrossRhodes at about 8 minutes, only for Spears to pull JBL out of the ring. JBL hit the Clothesline From Hell and got a 2-count. Spears tried to distract the ref, but Gable Steveson ran to ringside to chase Spears off! Cody got the win at 12:02 with another CrossRhodes.

Main Event: AEW World Championship
Jeff Jarrett © (7-0) vs. Raven (2-0)
Jarrett and Raven have a hard-hitting brawl of a match. Jarrett tries a lot of his usual heel tricks - poking the eyes, low blows - but Raven is able to block them all. A high point in the match comes when Jarrett hits a superplex on Raven off the top rope and both men recover. This brings the rest of the Apex out from the back, with the intention of helping Jarrett. He stands and waves them off, only to turn around into an Evenflow DDT from Raven! 1…2…NO! Jarrett kicks out, and Raven is stunned. Raven goes for another DDT, but Jarrett suplexes his way out of it. Jarrett wins after hitting The Stroke at the 16-minute mark. The Apex comes out to celebrate with Jarrett.

We see a recap video of Paige VanZant and Serena Deeb’s feud. VanZant won their first match despite Deeb hurting her ankle; then Deeb attacked and injured the ankle further. VanZant is not medically cleared for this match, but wanted to fight Deeb as soon as possible.
We have a referee, but only to count the pinfall or acknowledge the submission.
Lights Out Match:
Paige VanZant (3-2) vs. Serena Deeb (4-2)
VanZant and Deeb wasted no time in attacking each other, with Deeb going for VanZant’s injured ankle. They grabbed weapons from under the ring - VanZant hit Deeb in the back with a kendo stick repeatedly; Deeb later responded with a steel chair. VanZant tried to powerbomb Deeb through the announce table, but Deeb back-body dropped her through the table.
Later in the ring, Deeb grabbed a bag of thumbtacks and spread them on the middle of the mat. She suplexed VanZant onto the tacks, which stuck in her back. VanZant tried a few times to lock in the rear naked choke, but Deeb kept avoiding it. Deeb grabbed a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire; VanZant ducked the swing, but later Deeb used the barbed wire against VanZant’s face to make her bleed.
The match ended when VanZant hit Deeb with a Pedigree in the middle of the ring, with Deeb’s face going face first into the thumbtacks. VanZant got the pinfall at 22:13 and the crowd cheered.
VanZant limped to the back, holding her hand high in the air as the show ended.
