AEW Dynamite: Fight for the Fallen - July 20, 2022
Live from Cleveland, OH
We get live shots of the crowd in Quicken Loans Arena, and Tony Khan is in the ring, holding the All-Atlantic Championship and a microphone. “By the end of tonight, we will crown the inaugural All-Atlantic Champion, and I can’t tell you how excited I am. We have also got a huge show on-tap for next week’s Summer Smash, where we will see the debut of a couple of new Elite wrestlers. Without further ado, let’s get to the action!”
First Round:
Gable Steveson (3-0) vs. Sammy Guevara (3-2) w/ Taynara Conti
Guevara uses his speed to work on Steveson, but eventually Steveson is able to use his mat wrestling skills to ground Guevara. He locks in an ankle lock, but the ref is distracted by Conti while Guevara taps. The ref sends Conti to the back. Eventually, Steveson wins with the Olympic Slam at 13:32.

A Summer Smash promo briefly recaps the feud between Los Parks and LAX. We see Los Parks’ table match challenge from before Double or Nothing, when L.A. Park vowed to put Konnan through a table. LAX won the match after Hernandez pulled Homicide off a table as L.A. Park was jumping. Fast forward to last week when Cesar Duran challenged LAX to a Blood and Guts match in August. The winner of next week’s Konnan vs. L.A. Park match will see their team get the man advantage during Blood and Guts.
—
Jungle Boy (1-0) vs. Billy Kidman (2-2)
Jungle Boy controls the match until The Butcher and the Blade come to ringside. The Blade tries to interfere, but is warded off by the ref. The Butcher slides in a pair of brass knuckles that Kidman uses to knock Jungle Boy out. The tag team backs off as Kidman hits the Seven Year Itch and gets the win at 5:44. Following the match, The House of Black starts stomping on Jungle Boy until Jurassic Express runs out. The heels bail up the ramp, where Malakai Black is standing. The two squads stare each other down as we cut to break.

We get a promo for next week’s Summer Smash, previewing the Lights Out Match between Serena Deeb and Paige VanZant, highlighting their feud so far and VanZant’s injured leg. It’s noted that the match will happen during an “extended” edition of AEW Dynamite. Due to its potentially violent nature, and that the match is not officially sanctioned by AEW, the match must take place after the normal show. TNT will still air the match in its entirety.
—
Jeff Cobb (5-2) vs. Baron Corbin (2-2)
Cobb and Corbin have a good back-and-forth match for about 5 minutes, until Cobb takes control with a series of suplexes. He pins Corbin after a Tour of the Islands at 8:28.
—
Shawn Spears (2-2) vs. Matt Riddle (4-3)
Riddle and Spears have a great back-and-forth match. Spears hit the C4 after about 9 minutes, but Riddle kicked out at 2. Beer Money makes their way to ringside after this. Riddle hit a Bro 2 Sleep into a German Suplex for a pin attempt that was interrupted by Storm and Roode sliding into the ring. The ref yells at them to leave, as all four men are arguing. Storm slaps Spears in the face and the ref calls for the bell! Shawn Spears wins by DQ at 12:40. Riddle looks perplexed and argues the result, as the Apex members attack Riddle. Jeff Cobb and The Hurricane run out from the back. Storm and Spears bail, but Cobb is able to grab Roode before he can get away. He chokeslams Roode, then hits the Tour of the Islands on him as Riddle recovers. Riddle, Cobb and Hurricane stare down the members of The Apex as we head to commercial.
—
Another preview for Summer Smash shows Jake Hager asking Tony Khan for a match, and Khan agreeing to put him up against a mystery wrestler. But who will that be?
We also see a brief recap of the Steiner Bros. vs. American Wolves feud. The Steiners will defend the titles against the Wolves in a Tornado Tag Team match next week.
—
Second Round:
Gable Steveson (4-0) vs. Billy Kidman (3-2)
Steveson pins Kidman with an Olympic Slam at 2:11 in a dominant performance.
—
Jeff Cobb (6-2) vs. Shawn Spears (3-2)
Before the match began, it was announced that if any members of The Apex, Riddle or Hurricane came to ringside, the match would be thrown out and Steveson would be awarded the championship.
Cobb and Spears had a good back-and-forth match, with Spears trying to pull out all the stops in the heel playbook — raking the eyes; low blow behind the ref’s back; begging off, then attacking; — and Cobb stayed in the match, hitting a variety of suplexes. Cobb hit a standing moonsault that got a two-count. Cobb went for a Tour of the Islands, but Spears twisted out of it, then rolled Cobb up for a pin with his feet on the ropes for leverage. The ref didn’t see the feet, and Spears got the win at 14:02.
—
We get one more promo for Summer Smash, focusing on The Apex’s various matches - Beer Money vs. Riddle & Cobb; Cody Rhodes vs. JBL; and Jeff Jarrett’s title defense against Raven.
—
Finals:
Gable Steveson (5-0) vs. Shawn Spears (4-2) (The Apex are still barred from ringside)
Spears and Steveson have a good match, with Spears attempting to put Steveson away quickly, hitting big moves like the Tye Breaker and the Slingshot Jackhammer early on. Spears caps off his early flurry of big moves with the C4 for the pin attempt. 1…2…No! Steveson kicks out, and is able to start controlling the match. Spears avoids the Olympic Slam on 3 occasions, then Steveson hits a running powerslam that gets a 2-count. Steveson locks in an ankle lock, but Spears gets to the ropes. Steveson goes for another Olympic Slam, which Spears wiggles out of and rolls up Steveson with his feet on the ropes again. 1…2… and the ref stops counting as he notices Spears’ feet on the ropes. While Spears is arguing with the ref, Steveson finally is able to hit the Olympic Slam and gets the 1…2…3 at 18:54. And Gable Steveson is the inaugural AEW All-Atlantic Champion!
Spears storms off as Tony Khan comes to the ring to present Steveson with the championship. Steveson grabs a mic - “Since the day I signed on the dotted line to become a professional wrestler, I have wanted to win a championship. I am honored to have been given the chance to win this title, and I knew that all I needed was a chance. I look forward to representing AEW and our fans all around the globe as the All-Atlantic Champion. I proved tonight, I am Gable Steveson, and I am the Real Deal.”
He holds the belt high with both hands and we end the show with a highlights package from throughout the night, and a final rundown of the Summer Smash card for next week.
