AEW Dynamite, June 29, 2022
Live from Daily’s Place in Jacksonville
**Match results from this week’s AEW Dark -
Hook (3-0) def. Slice Boogie (0-2) in 4:10
Jungle Boy (1-0) def. Peter Avalon (0-7) in 3:43
Taynara Conti (0-0) def. Jamie Hayter (0-5) in 5:56**
Cameras pan on the Dynamite crowd, then zoom in on the announce table.
Taz - “We are back home in Jacksonville, after an explosive Road Rager event last week. Tonight we’ve got two more qualifier matches for the Fight for the Fallen tournament, the Dynamite debut of Cheerleader Melissa, and more fallout from Road Rager!”
Coach - “We’ll also hear an injury update on Paige Van Zant. But first, it looks like we’re going to hear from Cody Rhodes!”
Cody’s music hits to large cheers, and out walks the American Nightmare with a big smile on his face. He gets to the ring and has a mic. “Finally, I can feel a weight lifted off of my shoulders. I have vanquished Malakai Black, and I’m ready to move on. But before I get to my plans in AEW, I have a little something to say about this weekend’s Colossal Showdown - a supercard to rival all supercards in this business. I will have the chance to tag with my big brother and my daddy, and, man, if I can’t say I’m excited.
“As for what is next for me in AEW. It’s about time for me to call my shot. I’m coming for the AEW World Championship. Jeff Jarrett, I am coming for you.” Cody leaves the ring.
Match 1 - Fight for the Fallen Qualifier
Baron Corbin (2-2) vs. Luchasaurus (0-0)
They have a hard-hitting match, and Corbin wins at 9:34 with the End of Days.
—
We are backstage, and Andrade El Idolo is talking with Tony Khan.
Andrade - “How are you running things around here? Can people just come out and declare their intentions for a title shot without earning anything. I am El Idolo. You put that gold around my waist, and you will see your numbers skyrocket.”
Tony smirks and replies, “Our numbers are doing quite all right, thank you. But I do hear you. Cody is certainly in line for a shot. But he needs that one more big win to really get there. I’ll have an announcement later tonight about the next challenger to the AEW World Championship, at Dynamite: Summer Smash on July 27.”
—
Match 2 - Cheerleader Melissa (1-0) vs. Brandi Rhodes (1-3)
Brandi gets the win on a surprise roll-up at 6:12.
—
We are backstage with Matt Riddle and Jeff Cobb.
Riddle - “Jeff, I really wanted to win that belt, man. But Mr. Double J just keeps pulling rabbits out of his sleeve. He’s like a magician.”
Cobb - “I think you mean his hat, not his sleeve.”
Riddle - “His hat? It’s a cowboy hat, not a magician hat. How would he pull a rabbit out of a cowboy hat?”
Cobb - “You got me there. What are we going to do about The Apex? And Beer Money. We need a plan.”
Riddle “Are…are you saying we’re a team, bro!? Riddle & Cobb. That could be like a TV show or something!”
Cobb - “Yes, Matt. We’re a team. And we need to work together to break The Apex apart.”
Riddle nods his head, they bump fists.
Riddle - “Dude! We need a sweet tag team name! What should it be?”
Cobb shrugs his shoulders, while Riddle scratches his chin and we cut to commercial.
—
Paige VanZant emerges from backstage, with a crutch to support her ankle. She stays on the stage. “I wanted to take a moment to revisit last week. It was great to get back on the winning side and defeat a strong opponent like Serena Deeb. But she did a number on my ankle. I’ve been told by the doctors that I have a sprained ankle. It’s not that bad, but I’ll be out of action for a short while. Once I recover, you can bet that I’ll be back on the move toward Jade Cargill and the AEW Women’s Championship!”
Serena Deeb runs out from backstage and clobbers Paige in the back with a chair! Paige falls to the ground and drops her crutch. Serena picks it up and starts hitting Paige’s injured ankle. Serena places the ankle in-between the chair and the stage, then stomps on it, and Paige is hurt badly. Officials come to pull Serena away, and she walks off with a smile on her face as Paige writhes in pain.
—
Match 3 - Kofi Kingston (1-0) vs. Homicide (0-0-1)
Kingston gets the win with the Trouble in Paradise at 9:52. Konnan tried to interfere in the match, but L.A. Park ran out and attacked Konnan, who then ran off through the crowd.
—
Tony Khan comes out to the stage following the break.
“I am proud of the way that All Elite Wrestling has come onto the scene. It is my intention that all accolades will be earned in this promotion. We won’t be handing out title shots left and right. So, with that in mind and a premiere edition of Dynamite coming up, next week’s Dynamite will be headlined by a five-man match with a title shot on the line. Cody Rhodes, Andrade El Idolo, Scott Steiner, John Bradshaw Layfield and a Joker to be revealed next week. The first man to score a pinfall or submission wins the match. Good luck, gentlemen!”
—
Jade Cargill comes out to the ring, wearing the AEW Women’s Championship and a big smile on her face. “The baddest b**** on the planet did it again. I demolished Riho two weeks ago and remained undefeated. In fact, I have been so dominant that I am going to throw down an open challenge. Every week until someone proves she can hang with me. If anyone manages to beat me, that will earn them a title shot. So, who has the guts to try me?”
Music hits and out walks indie wrestler Sky Blue.
Taz - “That’s Sky Blue! She’s an up-and-coming independent wrestler, now out of a job after the shuttering of the Women’s World Wrestling Alliance.”
Coach - “That’s right, Taz. I knew she’d be getting a tryout in AEW, but she is out to make a splash by going straight for the top star. I’ve been informed that, if Sky wins tonight, she will be offered a full contract.”
Match 4 - Jade Cargill (4-0) vs. Sky Blue (0-0) - Non-Title
Cargill wins with her Jaded Finisher at 1:34.
She grabs her title and poses over Sky Blue, until she is interrupted by the staticky video, with a slightly clearer swing. It ends again with the clock getting closer to midnight, as we cut to commercial.
—
The Apex comes to the ring, and is all smiles. Jarrett is holding the belt and a microphone.
Jarrett - “It feels good to be king. I have conquered all-comers in AEW, and regardless of who wins next week, I know that I will persevere at Summer Smash. But that’s a long way away right now. For tonight’s celebration, I want to introduce The Apex at full strength. Each of us has a little something to say, I think.”
Spears - “Thanks, Jeff. I joined the Apex for two reasons - I believe in Jeff Jarrett, and aligning myself with the best this business has to offer will only help me get there faster. You will have a chance to witness my prowess when I qualify for the Fight for the Fallen tournament in tonight’s main event. You are looking at your first All-Atlantic Champion!” He passes the mic to JBL.
JBL - “The Apex is quickly taking charge, as I knew we would. Double J is the first and only AEW World Champion. Shawn, here, is about to be the All-Atlantic Champion. And my friends over here, Beer Money, will surely be on their way to becoming tag team champions. Since I came to AEW, people have been asking why I would align myself with the champion. Don’t I aspire to hold that exact belt? The truth is - I do want to be the AEW World Champion. But I also want my friends to succeed. My number one concern right now is to keep The Apex at the top of the mountain. And right now, that means supporting the King of the Mountain himself, Jeff Jarrett.” He hands the mic to James Storm, but before Storm can start talking, Matt Riddle, Jeff Cobb and The Hurricane come out on stage.
Riddle - “Man, this sure is a nice little party. Did you get an invitation, Jeff?” Cobb shakes his head. “Mr. Hurricane?” He also shakes his head. “Man, Jeff, I know you have my number. I mean…Jeff Jarrett. There’s too many Jeffs.”
Storm - “I don’t particularly appreciate being interrupted.”
Cobb - “I don’t really give a damn what you appreciate. We are here to put you on notice. I’m going to win the All-Atlantic Championship, and then we are going to set our sights on James Storm and Bobby Roode. We are tired of your entire group costing us our shot.”
Riddle - “So how about a match. Beer Money vs. Matt Riddle and Jeff Cobb. We can throw down right now.”
Storm looks down at his watch - “I think we’re out of time for this week, bro. And we’re a little bit busy next week.” Roode asks why they’re busy. Storm replies with a shrug, “Probably drinking.” They fist bump.
While they’re talking, Riddle, Cobb and Hurricane walk down the ramp to climb in. The Apex confers briefly, then slides out of the ring as the faces slide in. The two groups stare each other down as we go to commercial.
—
Back from commercial, everyone has cleared the ring and ringside except for Spears, whose qualifier match is next, and JBL, who is managing Spears.
Main Event - Fight for the Fallen Qualifier
Shawn Spears (2-2) w/ JBL vs. Hijo de la Park (2-1-1)
Spears picks up the win at 10:45 with the C4. Park had Spears down after hitting a spear, but JBL placed Spears’ foot on the rope without the ref seeing. Spears got the win and celebrated with JBL as the show ended.
