AEW Dynamite - June 1, 2022
Live from Phoenix, Az.
The show kicks off with a highlights package from Double or Nothing, ending with JBL’s debut, helping Jeff Jarrett to defeat Jeff Cobb and win the championship. We get some fireworks and a shot of the crowd as Jeff Jarrett’s music hits, and he walks out with the AEW World Championship around his waist, flanked by Shawn Spears and John Bradshaw Layfield. They go to the ring, and Jarrett grabs a mic.
Jarrett - “I said it before, and I’ll say it again - Jeff Jarrett is the top name in All Elite Wrestling, and I proved it at Double or Nothing. There was never a doubt that I would walk out of that arena as the World Champion. And, speaking of World Champions, I’d like to introduce all of you to a man who needs no introduction, and a former champion in his own right, John Bradshaw Layfield.”
JBL, with his big smile and cowboy hat, takes the mic. “Thank you, Jeff. Thank you very much. It is wonderful to be here in Phoenix alongside my good friend, and with another future champion in Shawn Spears. In fact, the men in this ring represent something special. We are the top of the mountain; the ideal that everyone in the back strives for. We are The Apex!”
This brings out an angry Jeff Cobb, who stands on the stage with a mic.
Cobb - “I am generally not the kind of man to complain, but I think that I’ve got a legitimate beef with your so-called Apex. Between Shawn pulling the ref from the ring, and the idiot cowboy interfering, I was fighting with a severe handicap. So I demand a rematch, and a fair fight!”
Jarrett - “You just can’t handle that I pinned you, flat on the mat, in the middle of the ring. You can’t handle losing because you’re a sore loser. Get to the back of the line. I’ll see you when you have a little more seasoning.” This brings out Tony Khan.
Khan - “Actually, Mr. Jarrett, I think that Mr. Cobb has a point. As the owner and general manager of AEW, I think I’m going to answer his plea and give the fans in Phoenix a little surprise. Tonight, Jeff Jarrett will defend the AEW World Championship against Jeff Cobb! And Shawn Spears and JBL are barred from ringside. If either of them interfere in tonight’s match in any way, I will strip you of the title and you will never have another chance to win it!”
Jarrett looks on furiously as we cut to commercial.

We come back to a recap of Riho winning a women’s gauntlet match at the buy-in to the PPV, during which Serena Deeb attacked Paige VanZant to deny Paige a shot at the win.
Match 1 - Riho (3-0) vs. Serena Deeb (2-0)
Riho picks up the win at 8:42 with a running knee strike. After the match, VanZant hits the ring and locks a rear naked choke in on Deeb, holding it until officials pull her off.

We are backstage in a locker room with The Apex. Dean Malenko walks in with a slight limp from his “I Quit” match against Matt Riddle.
Dean - “Jeff, why didn’t you invite me out to the ring with you earlier?”
Jarrett - “Unfortunately, Dean, you just aren’t enough of a winner to be a part of The Apex. Hell, you couldn’t even take care of Riddle. And because of that, he’s next in line for a title shot after I finish Cobb off. Get out of my locker room.”
Dean moves to go after Jarrett, but Spears gets in his way. Malenko turns to walk out of the locker room.
Jarrett - “Tell you what, Dean. You’re an old friend. I’ll give you a chance to prove you belong with The Apex. If you can beat Shawn next week, you’re in.”
Dean stares toward Shawn, then walks out.

Match 2 - Eddie Edwards (0-1) vs. Orange Cassidy (0-3)
Edwards pins Cassidy in 1:44 after a Boston Knee Party.
He grabs a mic and turns to address the crowd. “I’m going to share a little piece of trivia that I want everyone here to remember as AEW moves forward. At Double or Nothing, Davey and I were placed on the pre-show in what can only be described as an insult. But at that event, we defeated SCU to become the number 1 contenders to the titles. And do you know what happened to them after the match? They were let go from AEW. Rick and Scott Steiner? It’s time for the two of you to ride off into the sunset. The American Wolves are the future of this business, and we are going to take the championships off of you at Road Rager in three weeks.”
—
Match 3 - Jurassic Express (Luchasaurus and Jungle Boy) (2-3) vs. 5150 (Slice Boogie and Rivera) (0-1)
Jurassic Express picks up the win in 8:54 after Luchasaurus chokeslams Rivera.
—
We see highlights from Double or Nothing’s matchup between Gable Steveson and Brian Cage, including Steveson picking up the win and Cage going nuts on the ref afterward. We also see Tony Khan’s announcement that Cage is suspended indefinitely from AEW.

Jeff Cobb is backstage with Matt Riddle and Shane Helms.
Riddle - “Bro, I know you’ve got this. I’m stoked that you have a chance to set things right in the Battle of the Jeffs 2: Electric Bro-galoo. Then we’ll get to have a match for the title at Road Rager, and that match will be Bro-riffic!”
Cobb - “Look, man. I know that JBL and Shawn are barred from ringside tonight. But I’ve got a feeling that Jarrett has something up his sleeve. Can you two have my back if anything goes down?”
Shane - “Absolutely, brother. We are here for you.”
Riddle - “Speaking of feelings, Shane, man. I owe you big-time. Your suggestion to challenge Dean-o ultimately gave me a shot at the championship. You’re a smart dude. But I seem to have lost touch with the green weatherman. Do you know where I can find him?”
Shane smirks, then replies - “Nope. But what does that have to do with feelings?”
Riddle - “I dunno. But I think I feel my tummy rumbling. I’ve got the munchies. Let’s go get a snack.”
Riddle and Shane walk off, while Cobb looks on.
—
Match 4 - Billy Kidman (0-2) vs. Marko Stunt (0-1)
Kidman picks up the win in 5:45 with the Seven Year Itch. As he starts walking to the back, Cody Rhodes emerges from the back, with an angry look on his face. Kidman sees Cody and tries to hop the barrier and walk through the crowd, but Cody catches him. CrossRhodes to Kidman on the floor! Cody picks him up and does it again. And a third time, until security from the back comes to pull Cody off. Rhodes storms to the back.

We are backstage with The New Day, who are consoling each other about their loss to the Steiners.
Kofi - “Man, I really thought we could have won the titles, Xavier. We were so close! I got greedy by going for that hurricanrana.”
Xavier - “No sweat, Kofi. We have nothing to be ashamed of in losing to the Steiners. Now we just need to regroup, reset and build back up for another match with them.” There’s a knock at the door. Kofi answers it, and the LAX stable is standing there, with Konnan. “Visitors!”
Konnan - “I don’t know who you two think you are, or what your problem with me is. But I’ve come to tell you to knock it off, before we knock you out!”
Kofi whispers to Xavier - “You think he knows we beat him up in Revenge?” Xavier replies - “I think you might be right.”
Xavier - “Man, we were just having a little bit of fun. I’d never want to offend K-Dawg.”
Konnan - “Well, hombres. You need to lay off.” LAX departed, while the New Day shrugged their shoulders and went back to playing games.

Main Event - AEW World Championship Match (JBL and Shawn Spears are barred from ringside) (30-minute time limit) (Dynamite matches each have time limits. 20 for non-title; 30 for title, unless otherwise noted)
Jeff Jarrett © (5-0) vs. Jeff Cobb (4-1)
Jarrett and Cobb have a great back-and-forth match, in some ways reminiscent of their match at Double or Nothing. Jarrett pulled out a lot of tricks - eye pokes, a low blow behind the ref’s back, and keeping his legs on the ropes for leverage during a pin - but struggled to get the win. Cobb tried hitting the Tour of the Islands, but Jarrett reversed it 3 times. Cobb hit a delayed vertical suplex and picked Jarrett up to go for another Tour. He whipped Jarrett toward the ropes, but the ref got in the way and took a bump. While Cobb checked on the ref, Jarrett slipped out of the ring and grabbed a guitar from under the apron. He gets in the ring and taps Cobb on the shoulder. Cobb stands and turns straight into a shot from the guitar.
Jarrett shoves the evidence out of the ring, then hits The Stroke as the ref comes two. Jarrett pins Cobb. 1…2…3! Jeff Jarrett is still the AEW World Champion! Match time - 24:11. He starts to stomp on Cobb, until “Watch out, there’s a Hurricane Comin’!” hits and Riddle and The Hurricane run out. Jarrett bails with his championship as the show comes to an end.
