AEW Dynamite: Fyter Fest - April 27, 2022 - Live from the AmWay Center in Orlando, Fla.
AEW Commentary Team - Taz and Jonathan Coachman
Coach - “Good evening and welcome to a special edition of AEW Dynamite! We are on the road in a new location for the first time, and we’ve got a great show on-tap for tonight’s Fyter Fest, presented by Universal Studios! We will be crowning the first ever AEW Women’s Champion and Tag Team Champions.”
Taz - “That’s right, Coach! We’ll see the in-ring return of The Steiner Brothers. And if I was the winner of tonight’s Casino Battle Royale, I’m not sure I’d be too excited about facing the Steiners.”
Coach - “We’ve also got the in-ring professional wrestling debut of Olympic Gold Medalist and 2-time NCAA heavyweight champion, Gable Steveson, as well. He’ll be squaring off with Jake Hager, an accomplished college and professional wrestler and MMA star in his own right!”
Taz - “That should be one helluva match, Coach. It’s time to get Fyter Fest kicked off with a bang! Let’s head to the ring for the beginning of the Casino Battle Royale! We’ll start off with 2 competitors. A new wrestler will join every minute, until all 16 competitors are in the ring. Eliminations are over the top rope, and the last wrestler left in the ring will earn his team a title shot against the Steiners later tonight!”
Match 1 - Tag Team Casino Battle Royale - Winner faces Steiner Bros. in the Main Event for the tag team championships
Xavier Woods and Slice Boogie start off the match with a strength test. Armdrag by Woods; Boogie pops right up and hits a clothesline. Woods recovers and sends Boogie into the ropes; Woods hip tosses Boogie, then locks in a sleeper hold. Next entrant is Homicide, who rushes in and kicks Woods in the head. The LAX stablemates double-team Woods and try to lift him over the top rope. This continues until the next competitor, Eddie Edwards, comes out and starts brawling with Boogie. Woods fights off Homicide and hits a back body drop. Next up is The Blade, who immediately attacks Woods. Homicide and Blade work together to try eliminating Woods, while Boogie gets the upper hand on Edwards. Next up is Frankie Kazarian. He goes straight for The Blade and eliminates him, then works with Woods against Homicide. Next up is Hernandez!
Hernandez comes straight to Homicide’s aid against Woods and Kazarian. They are able to toss Kazarian. Woods is recovering in the corner, while Edwards starts to get the upper hand on Boogie. Homicide and Hernandez come to Boogie’s aid, and the three team up to eliminate Edwards. Now the three members of LAX/5150 are in the ring with Woods. LA Park Jr. is the next entrant! He runs in like a house on fire, knocking Boogie down with a shoulder block; then Homicide with a flying cross body; he goes for a shoulder block on Hernandez, but runs into a brick wall. Body slam to Park Jr. LAX/5150 go to work on Park Jr., while Woods rests in the corner. Jungle Boy is next, and the order shuffles to see Woods, Jungle Boy and Park Jr. forming a temporary alliance to battle LAX/5150. The Butcher is next in, and gets eliminated immediately by running toward Park Jr., who ducks and tosses the Butcher straight over the ropes. Scorpio Sky and Davey Richards are the next two entrants, with no eliminations. Rivera comes next, and LAX/5150 are at full strength. The others have fractured a bit, allowing the LAX team to focus their efforts. They eliminate Richards and Sky, then go to work on Park Jr. Next up is LA Park, who saves junior. While the Parks and LAX are fighting, Woods is able to eliminate Homicide. This turns Hernandez onto Woods. He Irish Whips Woods hard to the ropes for an elimination, but Woods skins the cat! Hernandez moves on to Jungle Boy. In comes Luchasaurus! He saves Jungle Boy and exchanges blows with Hernandez. LA Park eliminates Slice Boogie, then Rivera tosses Park. Park Jr. and Rivera are brawling; Hernandez and Luchasaurus are brawling; Woods and Jungle Boy are fighting, too. Luchasaurus tries lifting Hernandez, but he tosses the dinosaur out. Hernandez grabs Jungle Boy by the hair and tosses him, too. Body slam to Woods, then Hernandez teams with Rivera to toss Park Jr. out. As they high-five, Kofi Kingston comes out as the final entrant!
It’s down to Kofi, Woods, Hernandez and Rivera. Kofi goes after Hernandez, while Rivera and Woods battle. Kofi hits Trouble in Paradise, but Hernandez doesn’t fall! Kofi tries again, but Hernandez catches him in the air and tosses Kofi over the top rope. While he’s doing this, Woods ducks away from Rivera and lifts him over the top rope, too. It’s down to Xavier Woods and Hernandez as the final two. Woods is too gassed, and Hernandez eventually gets Woods in the Border Toss, launching him out of the ring for the win. LAX (Homicide and Hernandez) will face the Steiner Brothers later tonight for the AEW Tag Team Championships! (Hernandez wins in 25:46)
**A commercial for Universal Studios airs, featuring Matt Riddle and The Hurricane riding various rides.**
Match 2 - Fatal Four-Way - Winner gets a shot at AEW World Championship at Double or Nothing - no DQ
Sammy Guevara (1-0) vs. Dean Malenko (1-0) vs. Andrade El Idolo (1-0) vs. Jeff Cobb (1-0)
Guevara and Malenko square off, while Andrade and Cobb start fighting. Malenko works to keep Sammy grounded. Side headlock takedown; Sammy stands and hits a back body drop, but Malenko keeps the hold. Meanwhile, Andrade and Cobb have spilled outside the ring. They’re fighting by the fan barriers, exchanging punches and kicks.
Back in the ring, Sammy has escaped the hold and hits a dropkick! Cross body block by Sammy. He goes for a running senton, but Malenko gets his knees up to block. Malenko locks in a bow-and-arrow hold to slow things down again. Outside the ring, Cobb hits a German Suplex to Andrade, sending him into the barrier, where he hits his head and is KO’d for the time being. Cobb heads into the ring and kicks Malenko in the head. He picks Guevara up and hits a belly-to-belly suplex over the ropes, sending Sammy out onto the floor! Malenko and Cobb face off now, with some mat wrestling. Malenko hits a brainbuster for a two count! Then locks in a side headlock.
Cobb breaks the hold with some elbows, stands and hits a European Uppercut, followed by a gutwrench suplex. He pulls Malenko up and Irish whips him to set up the Tour of the Islands, but Andrade is there to pull down the top rope, sending Malenko to the outside. Andrade springboards into the ring and hits a Dragonrana on Cobb! He lifts Cobb back up and sends him into the turnbuckle. Running splash in the corner sends Cobb down, and Andrade follows up with a dropkick to Cobb’s face! Sammy has recovered and starts attacking Andrade. After some back-and-forth, Andrade has Sammy set up for a vertical suplex from the top rope! Cobb has recovered and gets behind Andrade. He locks in a German suplex on Andrade, who completes the vertical on Sammy! All 3 wrestlers are down in the ring as Malenko slides back in. He picks Sammy up and hits a Double Underhook Powerbomb, then locks in the Texas Cloverleaf!
Sammy is close to tapping out until Andrade hits Malenko with the La Sombra DDT to break up the hold. Before he can pin Dean, Cobb Irish Whips Andrade into the ropes and hits the Tour of the Islands! He pins Andrade for the 1…2…3! Jeff Cobb is going to Double or Nothing to fight for a chance to become AEW World Champion! (Time - 19:32)
*Before the next match, we get a brief recap of VanZant and Cargill’s dominant first victories, as well as VanZant knocking Cargill out with a rear naked choke during last week’s Dynamite.*
Match 3 - AEW Women’s Championship: Jade Cargill (1-0) vs. Paige VanZant (1-0)
As the bell rings, Cargill goes straight after VanZant with a Lou Thesz Press. She picks Paige up and bodyslams her; bounces off the ropes and hits a leg drop. Jade mounts Paige and continues punching her. After a few punches, Paige finally blocks one and then headbutts Jade from the mat. This gets Jade off of her long enough for both to get to their feet. Kick to the head by Paige, and she moves behind Jade and goes for the rear naked choke! Jade stays on her feet, though, and runs backward to slam Paige into the turnbuckle and break the hold. Jade keeps Paige in the corner and kicks her down, “stomping a mudhole” before breaking away with a large scream.
Jade runs toward Paige to hit a dropkick while she’s down in the corner, but Paige rolls out of the way. They both get to their feet in the middle of the ring and exchange punches. Paige eventually catches Jade’s arm and hits an arm drag into an armbar! She locks it in for a long time, and it looks like Jade might tap! But Jade stands up while Paige is still holding onto her arm. Jade powerbombs Paige, but VanZant hangs on! Jade stands again and hits another powerbomb, this time breaking the hold. Jade and Paige recover for a little, then Jade lifts Paige up, locking her arms in - she’s going for her Jaded finisher! Jade hits it and rolls Paige over for the pin. 1…2…3! (Time - 7:24) Jade Cargill is the first AEW Women’s Champion! She celebrates with the belt, holding it up high. While she is celebrating, new music hits the speakers, bringing Jade’s celebration to a pause. She looks toward the ramp, and out walks Michelle McCool with a big smile on her face! Michelle McCool is All Elite! She points toward Jade and mimes the belt around her own waist. Jade just shakes her head and raises the belt high in the air.
*Before the next championship qualifier, we see a recap of Jarrett and Riddle’s interactions, ending with Jarrett hitting Riddle with the Stroke last week. We also see Baron Corbin’s victory, and Cody Rhodes’ attacks at the hands of Malakai Black*
Match 4 - Fatal Four-Way - Winner gets a shot at AEW World Championship at Double or Nothing - no DQ
Jeff Jarrett (2-0) vs. Matt Riddle (0-1) vs. Baron Corbin (1-0) vs. Cody Rhodes (1-0)
During Cody’s entrance, a man dressed in all black and wearing a hood runs in to attack Rhodes with a bat. The attack is vicious and sudden. He tosses Rhodes off the ramp and through some tables to the side. Cody is out and gets stretchered to the back. The masked man walks off.
This is now a triple threat match between Jarrett, Riddle and Corbin. As the bell rings, Jarrett motions to Corbin and says they should team up. Corbin shrugs his shoulders and nods, and they both go toward Riddle, who punches back and forth between Jarrett and Corbin. Eventually the duo gets the upper hand and hits a double-team vertical suplex! They stomp away at Riddle together, until Riddle escapes to the outside. Corbin follows, while Jarrett sits on a turnbuckle and rests.
On the outside, Riddle runs toward Corbin and hits him with a flying knee to the face, knocking Baron down. Running Bro-ton! Riddle bends to pick Corbin up, and Baron rakes the eyes. Spinebuster to Riddle on the floor! Corbin locks in the STO to stretch Riddle out, but can’t get a submission on the outside. He rolls Riddle in and slides in after him. This prompts Jarrett to hop out of the ring. He grabs a chair and watches from ringside.
Riddle and Corbin exchange moves until Corbin whips Riddle into the corner and hits a clothesline, followed by a boot to the face! He picks Riddle up and prepares to hit the End of Days, but Riddle wriggles away, runs toward the turnbuckle and hits the Floating Bro! Riddle tries for the Bro-to-Sleep, but can’t keep Corbin up long enough. Corbin lifts Riddle up into a chokeslam, then a backbreaker (the Black Hole Sun). After Riddle recovers, He tries for a cross body block and is caught by Corbin in a bear hug. This brings Jarrett out of his chair, not wanting Riddle to submit. But Riddle fights out of the hold with elbow strikes. A kick to the head! And Corbin is down; Riddle goes for the Bromission! This brings Jarrett in the ring to pull Riddle off.
Jarrett and Riddle trade blows! Riddle tries a roundhouse kick that Jarrett ducks. Snap suplex by Jarrett. Riddle pops up; Jarrett Irish whips Riddle and hits him with a dropkick, then locks in a sleeper hold. Before Riddle fades, he fights back and stands up. He runs toward the ropes and springboards off of them, flipping over Jarrett and escaping the hold. Bro-to-Sleep into a German suplex on Jarrett! Riddle heads to the top rope. He jumps off to hit a flying senton onto Jarrett, but Corbin has recovered and he catches Riddle in the air! Powerbomb to Riddle. Corbin lifts Riddle up and hits the End of Days! Corbin covers Riddle…1…2…NO! Jarrett with a boot to the back of Corbin’s head!
Corbin stands up angrily and gets nose-to-nose with Jarrett. Double J punts Corbin in the groin, then turns him around into the Stroke! Jarrett pins Corbin! 1…2…3! Jeff Jarrett wins, and will face Jeff Cobb at Double or Nothing for the AEW World Championship! (Time - 16:24)
After the match, Jarrett slides out of the ring and walks up the ramp, bragging. Riddle and Corbin stand in the ring, looking on at Jarrett. Riddle is disappointed, while Corbin looks mad.
**Before the next match, we get a video recapping Gable Steveson’s amateur wrestling career, from his NCAA championships to his Olympic medal. The video ends with a brief Gable promo, stating “I’m excited to be in AEW and have the chance to show everyone in the locker room why I am all elite.”**
Match 5 - Gable Steveson vs. Jake Hager
Steveson and Hager meet in the middle of the ring. Gable extends his hand to Jake, but Hager slaps it away and says “bring it on.” The bell rings and Jake immediately goes for a double leg takedown. Gable extends his legs out to prevent the takedown. They maneuver around the ring, each trying to score a takedown. Gable gets a side headlock. Jake pushes him off and Gable hits the ropes, runs back; Jake hits the mat and Gable runs past and hits the other ropes. Hager pops up and hits Gable with a big boot. Gable hits the mat, but pops immediately back up.
Two-leg takedown by Gable! And he applies a wrist lock to Hager on the ground. Knees to Hager’s midside. Jake fights out of it; stands up and bearhugs Gable. Belly-to-belly suplex. On the mat, Hager locks in an abdominal stretch on the ground. Gable works his way up out of the hold and hits a belly-to-belly suplex of his own. Steveson locks in a grapevine on Hager’s left leg. Jake gets to the ropes to break up the hold. Gable tries to Irish whip Jake into the corner, but Jake reverses it and hits a splash into the corner. Jake lifts Gable up onto the top rope and sets up for a super vertical suplex. But Gable punches him out of it and pushes Hager to the mat. Steveson is on the top rope! Hager stands up and Gable jumps and hits a cross body block into a pin! 1…2…Hager kicks out!
They both stand, and Steveson locks Hager up from behind. Hager maneuvers behind. German suplex to Gable! They stand. Jake kicks Gable in the gut and hits the Swagger Bomb! He goes for the pin. 1…2…Gable kicks out! Hager goes for another Swagger Bomb, but Gable stands and flips Jake over his head. Steveson goes to stomp on Hager, but Jake catches his ankle! Hager locks in an ankle lock! He drops to the mat and has it locked in tightly! Gable uses his upper body strength to get to the ropes and break the hold! Hager is growing frustrated and starts stomping on the ankle. Gable rolls away and then rolls Hager up for a quick 2-count. Hager hits another German suplex and gets a 2-count. He then argues with the ref.
Gable gets up, stumbling on his ankle. He grabs Jake from behind and hits the Olympic Slam. Goes for the pin. 1…2…3! Gable Steveson defeats Jake Hager at 12:31. After the match, Gable celebrates, while favoring his ankle. Hager looks upset.
Backstage
Konnan is standing with Homicide and Hernandez of LAX.
Konnan - “Earlier tonight, these two men proved they have what it takes to win on a big stage. And it doesn’t get too much bigger than facing Rick and Scott Steiner for the Tag Team Championships. Tonight, my boys will show the Steiners what it truly means to live and die in LAX.”
**Due to injuries sustained earlier tonight, Cody Rhodes will be unable to compete against Malakai Black during next week’s episode of Dynamite**
Main Event - AEW World Tag Team Championship
Steiner Bros. vs. LAX (Homicide & Hernandez)
Homicide and Rick Steiner start off the match. They lock up and Steiner shoves Homicide to the ground. Homicide pops back up and they lock up again. Hip toss by Steiner and Homicide pops up again. He runs toward Rick and tries a cross-body block. Rick catches him in the air and falls back for a fall-away slam. He drags Homicide to his corner and tags Scott in. Scott goes to work quickly. Hits a Military Press Drop, then locks in a sleeper hold. Homicide is able to put his leg on the ropes, and Steiner breaks the hold.
They stand and Steiner hits an overhead belly-to-belly suplex on Homicide, then stops to flex. When he picks Homicide up, the smaller man pokes him in the eyes and hits a quick dropkick to stun Steiner. And Homicide makes a hot tag! Hernandez runs in and hits a flying shoulder block on Scott to knock him down! Big boot to Rick on the apron knocks him to the floor. Hernandez whips Steiner into the ropes and hits a powerslam that gets a one-count. He locks in a cobra clutch to slow things down and wear Scott down. After a lengthy hold, Scott is able to stand up and falls back on Hernandez to break the hold!
They stand up and circle each other. Hernandez raises his hand for a test of strength. Scott reaches for it, but Hernandez kicks him in the gut. He whips Scott into the ropes; Rick hits a blind tag on Scott, who rebounds into a shoulder block from Hernandez, who doesn’t know Rick is the legal man! Rick stands on the top rope and hits a diving bulldog onto Hernandez! Pin! 1…2…and Hernandez kicks out!
Rick keeps on the offensive with a running Lariat, followed by an STF. Hernandez seems like he’s fading, but gets a second wind. He drags Rick to the corner and hits a hot tag onto Homicide! He springboards into the ring with a dropkick onto Rick. A lariat, but Rick stays standing; another lariat; and another, and still Rick stands. Homicide runs behind Rick and dropkicks the back of his knees. This finally drops Rick to his knees. Dropkick to the face, and Steiner falls. Homicide goes to the top rope for a diving leg drop. It connects! He pins for a two-count. Then tags a recovered Hernandez back in. He wastes no time and hits a Border Toss on Rick! Goes for the pin…1…2…NO! Rick gets his shoulder up at the last second, and Hernandez is stunned. He complains to the ref.
While he complains, Rick tags Scott in! Scott comes in like a ball of fire. German suplex; picks Hernandez up and hits a Reverse DDT; picks him up again, Irish whips into a Steiner-Line lariat and goes for a pinfall - but Homicide snuck in a tag, so he’s the legal man again! Homicide hops in the ring and runs straight into a Steiner-Line lariat. Scott tosses him to a corner and lifts him to the top rope. Frankensteiner!
Scott tags Rick in, then lifts Homicide into an Electric Chair. Rick hits a diving bulldog to complete the Steinerizer! Rick pins Homicide. 1…2…3! The Steiner Bros. are the inaugural AEW Tag Team Champions! (14:58)
The brothers celebrate with the championship belts as the show goes off the air.
