AEW Dynamite - April 20, 2022 - Live from Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, Fla.
AEW Commentary Team - Taz and Jonathan Coachman
We get the Dynamite intro video and fireworks, then cut to Coach standing in the ring with a mic.
Coach - “In just one week, AEW Dynamite will air a special edition event, known as Fyter Fest, sponsored by Universal Studios! The show will feature limited commercials, and air live from the AmWay Center in Orlando!
“At that show, we will crown the first women’s champion and tag team champions. We will also learn who will contend for the AEW World Championship at Double or Nothing in May. Those contenders will be determined in two fatal four-way matches. One match will feature Sammy Guevara, Dean Malenko and Jeff Cobb; the other will include Jeff Jarrett, Matt Riddle and Cody Rhodes! The final competitor in each match will be determined in matches tonight, starting with Baron Corbin and Shawn Spears!”
Match 1 - Winner is placed in Fatal Four-Way #1 at Fyter Fest for a shot at the World Title
Baron Corbin vs. Shawn Spears
Corbin wins after hitting the End of Days at the 8:43 mark after a back-and-forth match.
Corbin grabs a mic after the match. “Next week, I will do the same thing to anyone who gets in my way. Matt, Cody and Jeff. You will meet the end of your days at Fyter Fest, then I’ll go to Double or Nothing and become the first AEW World Champion.”
Match 2 - Cody Rhodes vs. Peter Avalon (0-1)
Cody hits the CrossRhodes for the win at 42 seconds. Avalon tried for a clothesline that Cody ducked. Cody hit the trademark Dusty Rhodes elbow before picking Avalon up and hitting the CrossRhodes for the win.
While Cody is walking up the ramp, the lights cut out. When they return, Malakai Black is standing over Cody, who is knocked out on the floor. Black smiles into the camera and the lights cut out again. When they return again, Black is gone and Cody slowly comes too, shaking off the cobwebs.
Match 3 - Hijo de la Park (1-0) vs. Homicide
Hijo has the upper hand after 12 minutes, when the three other members of LAX/5150 rush to ringside. This brings out LA Park and LA Park Jr. Everyone jumps in the ring and starts brawling. The match gets thrown out.
We come back from commercial to 3 stools in the ring. Paige VanZant comes out first, and then Jade Cargill. Coach is in the ring to talk to them about their upcoming Women’s Championship match at next week’s special Fyter Fest edition of Dynamite.
Coach - “I am standing in the ring with the two women who will fight each other for the first ever AEW Women’s Championship. We’ve got the ever-dangerous Jade Cargill facing off with the fiercely competitive Paige VanZant. Paige, what would winning this match mean to you?”
Paige - “I am one of the toughest women in the world. Winning the AEW Women’s Championship will validate everything I have been working for during my entire life. Next week, I am going to make Jade tap out.”
Jade - “You might think you’re the toughest woman here, but I’m the baddest b**** on the planet. You aren’t tapping me out anywhere other than in your dreams. Next week, I am going to chew you up, spit you out and win the championship.”
This brings Paige to her feet, and Jade gets up, too. They get face to face. Jade pushes Paige away. Paige returns with a forearm to Jade’s face! Coach rolls out of the ring. Jade grabs a stool and swings it at Paige, who dodges and trips Jade up. Paige grabs Jade from behind and locks in the rear naked choke! Jade scrambles to get to the ropes, but Paige pulls her back. Officials from backstage run out and pull Paige off of Jade, as Jade passes out from the choke. Paige walks away with a smirk while officials attend to Jade.
Match 4 - Jeff Jarrett (1-0) vs. “The Hurricane” Shane Helms
Jarrett defeats the Hurricane in 8:03 with The Stroke. Jarrett initially was overconfident, which allowed Hurricane Helms to get in some big moves. Helms hit the Eye of the Hurricane at the 5 minute mark for a 2-count. After that, Jarrett took control to eventually notch the victory.
Following the win, Jarrett grabs his guitar. When Hurricane stands up, Jarrett smashes the guitar over his head. This brings out Matt Riddle, who gets in Jarrett’s face.
Riddle - “What are you doing, Double J? Not only did you destroy another beautiful instrument, but you hurt the green weatherman!”
Jarrett - “Stop talking to me. I’ll see you next week, when I kick your a** and get one step closer to the World Championship.”
Riddle shoves past Jarrett to check on Helms, but at the last moment, Jarrett grabs him and hits him with The Stroke before walking off.
Match 5 - Winner is placed in a Fatal Four-Way at Fyter Fest for a shot at the World Title
Andrade El Idolo vs. Colt Cabana
Andrade wins in 7:04 with the La Sombra DDT. While celebrating the win, he makes a belt motion with his hands around his waist, indicating that he’s going after the title.
We are backstage with Cody Rhodes, looking straight into the camera. “Malakai Black, I don’t know what your problem is with me, or what you think you are accomplishing by attacking me like a coward. I’m a little busy next week going after a world championship opportunity. But I want you in the ring in two weeks. No sneak attacks. None of your lights-out bullcrap. Just one-on-one, Cody Rhodes versus Malakai Black.”
Match 6 - The American Wolves and The New Day vs. SoCal Uncensored and The Butcher & the Blade
This eight-man tag team match is balls-to-the-wall action for the first 5 minutes, until The Butcher tags in and starts to wear down Eddie Edwards. The heel team takes control for a while, until Kazarian accidentally clotheslines The Blade. They start fighting, which leaves Scorpio Sky alone in the ring. Kofi Kingston gets the pinfall victory after the Wolves hit the Force of Nature, at 14:18.
After the ring gets cleared out, The Steiner Brothers come out to a large ovation. Rick and the crowd bark back and forth at each other. Scott gets on the mic first.
Scott - “It’s great to be back and teaming with my brother! We — yes, we — are one of the most decorated tag teams out there, and we can’t wait to add the AEW Tag Team Championship to our long list of accomplishments.”
Rick - “There are a lot of great teams in AEW already. But we are the top dogs. The road to the championship goes through Rick and Scott Steiner!” A lot of barking back-and-forth with the crowd.
This brings out the Latin American eXchange stable, with Konnan on the mic.
Konnan - “Welcome back, Scott and Rick. What, is the real estate business too hard for you?” Rick scowls at Konnan. “Hombre, the first AEW tag team champs are standing on this stage, and not in that ring. We’ll see you next week.”
Rick - “Why wait until next week? If you want some…come get some!”
LAX starts walking to the stage, ready to attack the Steiners! Los Parks comes out through the crowd and gets in the ring beside the Steiners. This stops LAX, while the Steiners look a little uneasily at the Parks. The show ends with the teams staring each other down.
