I waited a long time to finally see Banned in Boston and it didn't disappoint. It was one hell of a fun ride. Going into the event, I thought that the undercard was a bit lacking, but it ended up coming together nicely in the end. Stardust vs. The Great Muta was a great show opener. The 6-man tag titles were defended in a pretty sweet fantasy wrestling dream bout. Things really started to pick up steam with Kevin F'n Owens vs. Hayabusa. That was a brilliant booking. Maybe the main reason that I thought the card seemed a bit lacking was because I recognized that the Mount Rushmore of Wrestling and AJ Styles didn't have matches. You fixed that with a nice impromptu 6-man tag match, which brought Jake "The Snake" Roberts out for a surprise appearance. I loved it!
André The Giant vs. Roman Reigns and Mankind vs. Sheamus were the highlights of the undercard, at least on paper. The were outshined by some of the matches that preceded them and the main events that were still to come. That's not to speak ill of either match. I think the right guys went over. André is a behemoth, but I think it must be hard to figure out ways to book him long-term. I think it was to your benefit to use him to put over an up-and-comer with untold potential. Reigns has a bright future, especially with this win under his belt.
Of course, the happy ending was produced with the victories of Crusher Casey and John Cena in the double main event. Both matches were built up for quite some time. Seeing Crusher get his revenge on JBL was sweet justice. However, then, having Big Match John save the day in the do-or-die final match of the Banned in Boston series was a fantastic way to cap the evening. All things considered, the main event really stole the show. It was a 10 star effort on a 5 star scale. It was the perfect blend of professional wrestling and sports entertainment all wrapped up in one. That match alone was well worth the wait.
I'm excited for BCCW to get a fresh start. I can't wait to see what a new season of BCCW television will bring us. MVP and the Montréal Mafia have finally been vanquished, but new villains will have to emerge. I think the Mount Rushmore of Wrestling will now really start to take off and I'm intrigued by Kevin Owens retaining the Middleweight Title despite the group he is affiliated with getting crushed and ostensibly Banned in Boston. He seems to have survived to fight another day. I think that is a wise move.
Bring on a fun summer of fresh new ideas. I'm looking forward to it!
