WCW Monday Nitro episode 9 for 01.02.23
Live from the James A. Rhodes Arena in Akron, Ohio
Commentary: Gorilla Monsoon and Don Callis
Ring Announcer: Gary Michael Cappetta
Interviewer: SoCal Val
Referees: Tommy Young, Joey Marella and Aubrey Edwards
The show starts with highlights from the Terrific Tussle. We then go live to Shane McMahon in the ring. He congratulates Kurt Angle and Thunder Rosa on winning their Tussles, but there are two men he has to deal with right now about their actions. He first calls out Paul Orndorff.
Orndorff comes out with Robert Fuller. Orndorff said he came out because he wanted to, not because McMahon ordered him to. McMahon chastises Orndorff for taking out Bob Holly and stealing his spot in the Tussle. Orndorff says that spot belonged to him, because if Hulk Hogan was getting in the Tussle, so was he. Hogan doesn’t deserve anything Orndorff doesn’t get too. McMahon ordered Orndorff to defend the WCW World Heavyweight Title tonight against Bob Holly. Orndorff laughs and says he appreciates the light workout. He leaves.
Before Shane can call him out. Nick Aldis comes out with ReDRagon of Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish. Aldis knows McMahon is going to try to punish him somehow tonight for buying Bobby Fish’s Tussle slot from him. McMahon actually praises Aldis for taking advantage of a loophole in the rules as selling a spot does have precedence. But, who he has a problem with is ReDRagon for not appearing for a show as advertised, especially after they were given special permission to attend the WCCW tag tournament. Fish claims he was injured and that caused them to miss their flight. McMahon tells him their doctors have cleared him to wrestle tonight, so it’s going to be ReDRagon and Aldis vs. the Dominators of Lashley, JYD and Atlas.

Back from break, we get Gorilla Monsoon and Don Callis at the announce table. Monsoon says McMahon has allowed Kurt Angle to pick Thunder Rosa’s opponent tonight and her to pick Angle’s. She went with her fellow countryman, Blue Demon Jr. Callis reveals Angle picked Madusa Micelli, because she has that one patriotic outfit, so it’s two cases of U.S. vs. Mexico tonight.
Thunder Rosa defeated Madusa Miceli with Col. Robert Fuller at 7:11. Rosa blocks the German Suplex by grabbing onto the rope. Micelli splats on her back and Rosa gets a slingshot double stomp to the gut off the ropes. Inverted DDT sets up the Thunder Fire Driver for the win.
SoCal Val has Hulk Hogan on the interview stage. “The 45.2 million Hulkamaniacs across the seven continents, including Antarctica, brother, knew the Hulkster was destined to win the Terrific Tussle, but ‘Killer’ Kevin Kross got the drop on me when I was trying to fight off 12 guys and a horse. He cheated by existing, brother. But, he ain’t no god killer, jack, he’s the latest nobody big man to be taken out by the immortal 24-inch pythons, brother. And, if he’s any real man, he’ll come out and face me tonight.”
Maria Kannellis-Bennett comes out and tells Hogan that her god killer specializes in immortals and when he destroys Hogan it will be on WCW’s biggest stage at Starrcade. However, she’ll offer him the Miracle Workers of Eli Drake and Mike Bennett if he can find a tag partner.
“I’ve got a tag partner, brother, my new best friend forever Owen Kevins will stand by the Hulkster’s side and the new Am-Can Connection will run wild all over the Miracle Workers tonight, brother.”

The Barbarian with “Number One” Paul Jones defeated “The Man with the Hands of Stone” Ronnie Garvin via pinfall by scoop power slam at 10:10. While going into the ropes, Jones pulls Garvin’s leg from the floor, so he goes after him. While Barbarian distracts the referee, Meng runs out and jumps Garvin. He rolls Garvin back into the ring for the finish.
Paul Jones on the microphone afterward says he heard the Dominators whining about having no real competition in WCW, well they’ve never faced the Powers of Fear yet. His guys have gold now as the WCW Trios Champions, but they want more like the WCW Tag Team Titles the Dominators have.
We then cut to the back where Hulk Hogan is talking with Kevin Owens. Owens is happy to tag with the Hulkster tonight, but his name is Kevin Owens, not Owen Kevins. Is that what he said, brother. Sorry, dude, the Hulkster got so worked up he forgot himself. What’s important is they drag the Miracle Workers of Mike Drake and Eli Bennet back down to earth, brother.

Kurt Angle defeated Blue Demon Jr. by pinfall via Angle Slam at 14:25. Demon goes up top, but The Patriot comes out waving a U.S. Flag to distract him. This allows Angle to get the pop up belly to belly superplex for a close two count and then he finishes with the Angle Slam.
SoCal Val has Jake “The Snake” Roberts on the interview stage. “Ever since the Terrific Tussle, everyone has been asking me why I suckered in my brother and attacked him. Well, I say I don’t have a brother. Anybody that gullible and that stupid could never be blood kin to me. I’ve got no sister, I’ve got not father and I’ve got no mother. The only family I have is Damian in this green bag right here. He’s the only family, the only friend and the only ally I need in or out of that ring. Here in WCW I’ve got one goal and that’s to become the UWA Universal Men’s Champion. And if Sam Houston has any brains whatsoever, he’ll stay out of my way. And since me, him and everybody in this arena knows he doesn’t, he’ll come after me. Well, I’ll be ready. Trust me.”

“Universal Treasure” Nick Aldis and ReDRagon (Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly) defeated The Dominators (Bobby Lashley, Junkyard Dog and Tony Atlas) by pinfall of Aldis on Atlas via Macho Man elbow drop at 13:43. The Powers of Fear run out and get into it with Lashley and JYD on the apron. This distraction allows the heels to hit Chasing the Dragon on Atlas behind referee Joey Marella’s back and Atlas then finishes. Powers of Fear leave the faces lying on the outside via the three on two advantage. Paul Jones on the microphone tells the Dominators to be careful what they ask for, because they’ll get it.
Maria Kannellis-Bennett talks with Kevin Owens in the back. She’s always looking for new talent and Owens could do better with her than Hogan. Her managerial services do come with certain special benefits. Owens asks if her husband is cool with that. Well, he gets it too. At the same time as Drake and Bennett? Well, they usually go one at a time, but they can all go at the same time if they want…wait, no, not that. Maria meant she offers a dental plan. She gets disgusted and walks off.

Ember Moon defeated Kamille Kaine by pinfall via slingshot helicopter leg drop at 8:12. Moon reverses a suplex and goes up top, but takes too long and Kaine falls into the ropes. Moon falls off the top to the floor. Referee Aubrey Edwards checks on her. Charlotte Flair then runs in and spears Kaine. Moon comes back in with the leg drop for the win. Monsoon guesses Edwards thought Kaine fell back down after getting half up from the suplex. Callis reminds us that Kaine eliminated Flair, the women’s champion, at the Terrific Tussle and Flair didn’t like that.
The Smith Family Legacy of Davey Boy Smith, Harry Smith and Tyson Kidd are out on the entrance stage with SoCal Val. Harry tries to talk first, but Davey Boy slaps him in the back of the head. What happened at the Terrific Tussle was a tragedy and he can’t believe Harry got them both eliminated by a never-was and a never-will-be father and son duo. Brian Pillman Sr. comes out with Brian Jr. and Griff Garrison (who is wearing dark sunglasses and looks hungover).
Davey Boy tells Brian Sr. that he’s once again late to the party. He’s been MIA in his son’s life while he’s been there for Harry since day one. Brian Sr. said they were separated by different promotions and after he was signed by WCW, Shane McMahon wanted to keep his debut at the Terrific Tussle a surprise. But he did put those notes in Brian’s locker as a way to reach out. (Garrison in the background, “that wasn’t a chick, bummer”) So, Brian is blaming him being a bad father on UWA contracts and Shane McMahon. Just suck it up and admit he’s a terrible father. Brian Jr. steps up for his father and says he’s here now and that’s all that matters to him and if there are any bad dads on this stage, it’s Davey Boy. Davey Boy goes to slug Brian Jr., but his dad steps in the way and takes the shot and goes down. Davey Boy calls him pathetic, spits on him and walks off. He snaps his fingers for Harry and Kidd to follow him off.

“The Immortal” Hulk Hogan and “The Prizefighter” Kevin Owens defeated the Miracle Workers (Mike Bennett and Eli Drake) with Maria Kannellis-Bennett by disqualification at 12:45. Owens works the bulk of the match after Kross comes out and brawls off with Hogan. Owens hits the Stunner on Bennett, but Maria sprays him in the eyes with her hair spray. Double beat down on Owens until Hogan eventually comes back and scares them off.
“Grizzled” Sam Houston is out with SoCal Val to address what his brother Jake Roberts said earlier. It’s true he and Jake weren’t really raised together and never got along. But he was thrilled to see him at the Terrific Tussle and maybe he shouldn’t have trusted him so quickly, but maybe he hoped a bit too hard for reconciliation. Houston is then attacked from behind by Roberts. He floors Houston and covers him with Damian. SoCal screams and runs away. Security comes out, but doesn’t get near the stage because of the snake.

“Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff with Col. Robert Fuller retained the WCW World Heavyweight Title over Bob Holly via piledriver at 16:45. Holly backdrops out of a piledriver. Hits the Alabama Slam and covers for one…two…thr…shoulder up. Robert Fuller jumps up on the apron and Holly goes after him. He grabs Fuller by the jacket lapels. Orndorff with a low blow from behind. Back suplex sets up the piledriver.
