RECAP OF WWE EXTREME RULES
During the Extreme Rules kickoff show, #DIY defeated The Dudley Boyz in 11:14 after Tommaso Ciampa put Bubba Ray Dudley through a table with a Fairy Tale Ending off the second turnbuckle. Earlier in the match, D-Von Dudley went through a table in the corner of the ring when Johnny Gargano hit him with a shotgun dropkick. Later, Bubba Ray eliminated Gargano with a Bubba Bomb off the turnbuckle through a table.
The premium live event broadcast began with “Ravishing” Rick Rude defeating CM Punk in 16:07 to win the Ambulance Match. In the middle portion of the match, their brawl turned bloody. Both men were busted open. Punk gave Rude a Go to Sleep and tossed him into the ambulance, but he was prevented from slamming the door shut on Rude when the ambulance inched forward. The ambulance inched forward each time Punk tried to grab the ambulance door. He ran over and forced the driver’s side door open where he found Bobby “The Brain” Heenan! He tried to pull Heenan out of the driver’s seat. Heenan put up enough of a fight that Punk was eventually blindside with a hit from a defibrillator to the back of the head by Rude, who then tossed him head-first into the side of the ambulance before giving him a Rude Awakening. Rude picked him up and threw him into the ambulance to get the win.
“Stone Cold” Steve Austin successfully defending his WWE UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP in his first title defense by scoring a pinfall victory over Sheamus in 10:35. Austin and Sheamus spent a lot of time brawling outside the ring. Copious amounts of Budweiser and Guinness beer were spilled in equal measure. Sheamus swung the shillelagh at Austin, who ducked it, then hit the kick and a Stone Cold Stunner on Sheamus to incapacitate him and get the win.
The Usos defeated the Lucha Bros. by pinfall when Jey pinned Rey Fénix at 15:17. There were superkicks all over the place during this briskly paced match. Jimmy and Jey went for a pair of frog splashes on Fénix and Penta, but both lochadores got their knees up. They double superkicked Jey and threw him into the side of the cage, then gave Jimmy the diving double-foot stomp package piledriver combo. Penta went for the cover. As he did, Umaga showed up and ripped open the cage door. Fénix tried to stop him from interefering, but that only got him placed on top of Umaga’s shoulders and dropped on top of Penta with a Samoan drop to break up the pinfall at the count of two. Umaga gave both luchadores a Samoan spike, after which the Usos threw Penta into the side of the cage and then gave Fénix the 1D.
Rhea Ripley defeated Becky Lynch and Shayna Baszler when Baszler quit the match at 14:41. Baszler had the first chance to win the match when she got Lynch in a Karifuda Clutch, but Ripley was able to break that up. Later on, Lynch put Ripley in the Dis-Arm-Her, but Baszler broke that up. It was only after Lynch was taken out of the match with a powerbomb of Lynch by Ripley through the Spanish announce table that Big Time Becks was removed from any possibility of factoring into the finish. While Baszler came close to ending it, Ripley fought back and locked Baszler into the Prism Trap to end that match.
Adam Cole emerging from the 10-man hardcore battle royal with his WWE INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP title reign intact. It was an improbable ending to a 20-minute contest that saw many of his opponents score pinfalls to put them in position to be deemed the champion at the end of the match. Neither Roman Reigns nor Keith Lee factored into the match very much. Around the 5-minute mark, Reigns speared Booker T, Eddie Guerrero, Shawn Michaels and Randy Orton. Around the same time, Keith Lee pounced The Miz, Adam Cole, Miro, and Randy Savage, leaving the two bitter enemies alone to brawl. That brawl took them away from the ring, where pinfalls or submissions had to be registered. Over the remaining 15-minutes, everyone else held the advantage at least once. The Miz scored a pinfall on Booker T with a Skull Crushing Finale onto a steel chair to put himself in position to win it with two-and-a-half minutes remaining in the contest. This was following help from his new associated, “All Ego” Ethan Page and Scopio Sky, formerly known as the Men of the Year, now known as Men of The Mizennium. Page and Sky stuck around to help The Miz protect the victory. But with 30-seconds to go, Brock Lesnar arrived and went full beast mode on the Men of The Mizennium. His assault culminated with The Miz receiving a F-5. Shawn Michaels saw the opening and made the pinfall, but as he started to lift up off of The Miz, Adam Cole struck from behind with a Boom! knee strike and made the pin with only 5-seconds remaining.
Bianca Belair successfully defended her WWE WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP by defeating Lita by pinfall in 9:53. Lita was thought to have the advantage as being extreme was in her wheelhouse. But while he did a fair bit of damage to Belair, the entire match unraveled for her when she attempted a Litasault on Belair after laying her out on a table. Belair rolled off the table and Lita went through it. The champion then picked up Lita and gave her the Kiss of Death through another table and pinned her for the win.
FTR successfully defended their WWE TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS at 15:38 by defeating The Hardy Boyz in a Tables, Ladders & Chairs match. The match stipulation was chosen by Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler, who are also the reigning UWA UNIVERSAL TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS, because they wanted to prove that they could beat Matt and Jeff Hardy at their own specialty match. Jeff Hardy did an obligatory swanton dive off the top of ladder onto Harwood, putting him through some tables outside the ring. Matt Hardy climbed the ladder to go for the titles, but Wheeler pulled him down to the mat, where he attempted to clothesline him. Matt ducked and tried for a twist of fate, but Wheeler shoved him into the ladder, then gave him a piledriver onto a steel chair. With both Hardy Boyz incapacitated, Wheeler had a clear path to the top of the ladder to retrieve the title belts for his team.
John Cena defeated Rowdy Roddy Piper at 22:27 to win their Last Man Standing match. Piper did not go quietly. He took Cena on a brawl from the ring to the ringside area, into the crowd, up into the concession stands, and back to ringside, where gave Cena a piledriver onto the steel ring steps. Miraculously, Cena managed to beat the standing 10-count by a second. Piper went to the German announce table to try for another piledriver, but this time, Cena countered with a back body drop that sent Piper through the English announce table. When Piper got up from that, Cena hit him in the back with a steel chair before hoisting him onto his shoulders. Before he could put Piper through the German announce table with an Attitude Adjustment, Piper clawed at Cena’s eyes and nose to break free. He slipped behind Cena and gave him a low blow. Piper smashed Cena’s face off the turnbuckle post and then ripped up a part of the floor mats and gave him a running bulldog onto the exposed floor. Piper returned to the ring to gloat as the referee counted Cena down. But you can’t keep a good man down. The Face that Runs the Place pulled himself up using the ring apron. Piper blasted him with a baseball slide that sent Cena into the barricade. Piper took him back into the ring, then dug under the ring to find a bag of thumbtacks, which he emptied in the ring. Piper started boxing with Cena’s face, chest, and abdomen. He set up for a suplex, but Cena countered to avoid landing in the thumbtacks. Cena picked up a chair and went to swing it at Piper, but he dropped it back into his face, causing him to stagger backwards. Piper charged at Cena, who ducked the attack and gave him a spinout powerbomb onto the thumbtacks! Piper was writhing in pain. He pulled himself up at the ropes. Cena gave him a clothesline out to the floor. He picked up Piper, hoisted him onto his shoulders and gave him an Attitude Adjustment through the German announce table. Piper still managed to pull himself up with the help of the announcer’s chairs and the barricade to beat the standing 10-count. Cena gave him one more Attitude Adjustment, this time through the Spanish announce stable. All three announce teams were on their feet watching Piper fail to respond to the count of the referee. After the referee counted to ten, he called for the bell and declared Cena the winner.
Triple H successfully defended his WWE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP by defeating Ricky Steamboat when he pinned him at 19:05. This extreme rules match turned into a bloody brawl very early on. Both men got their fair share of shots in on the other. Steamboat reverse a figure four leg lock and rallied to get in position to win the match with a diving crossbody, but Bobby “The Brain” Heenan grabbed onto Steamboat’s foot to prevent him from jumping off the top turnbuckle. Triple H hit him with a steel chair, knocking him off the top rope. He gave Steamboat a Pedigree onto the steel chair and made the pin, but Steamboat kicked out at the very last moment. Heenan dug under the ring to find Triple H’s trusty sledgehammer but when he tried to pull it out, the sledgehammer tugged back. Heenan pulled with all his might. He didn’t just pull the sledgehammer out from the under the ring. He also pulled out STING! Heenan looked as white as a ghost. Triple H came out of the ring to try to attack Sting, but he fought off the champion. Heenan picked up the sledgehammer and hit Sting between the shoulder blades with it, but the Icon no sold it. He turned around and chased Heenan away from the ring. Triple H picked up the sledgehammer and entered the ring. He came at Steamboat, who blocked with a dropkick. Steamboat picked up the sledgehammer and hit Triple H across the forehead with it. He went for the pin but “Ravishing” Rick Rude broke it up once again. The Heenan Family’s handsome enforcer repeatedly hit Steamboat in the back with a steel chair until CM Punk ran out to make the rescue. Still, the damage had been done, and when Triple H recovered, he gave Steamboat a Pedigree and pinned him for the 1-2-3!
