Ring of Honor Presents: Best in the World
Saturday, January 25th, 2020 Manhattan, New York Announcers: Mauro Ranallo, Steve Corino & Tazz
Cue the music! Cue the pyro! The very first Ring of Honor PPV is live on the air broadcasting from Manhattan New York, it’s time for RoH Best in the World!
We go live to our commentary team who recap the events of last night’s episode of Ring of Honor Wrestling before going over the match card for tonight’s event. We then head right to the ring, as this PPV kicks off with some tag team action!
Match #1: Tag Team Match Best Friends (Chuck Taylor & Trent Barretta) vs. Mystery Team Winner Gets the Final Spot in the RoH Team Team Championship Tournament
The mystery team is revealed to be Jay Lethal and Michael Elgin who come out together to a massive pop from a very surprised Ring of Honor crowd! Elgin and Lethal work together very well for a team, who are tagging for their very first time and spend the vast majority of this match working over the more established tag team of Chuck Taylor and Trent Barretta. Though the Best Friends manage to get in some of their own offense as well, it’s Elgin and Lethal who walk away victorious after Michael Elgin gets the pin on Chuck Taylor after an Elgin Bomb! Solid opening match to kick off the PPV.
Winners: Jay Lethal & Michael Elgin by pinfall @ 15:01.
After the match, Elgin and Lethal attack Chuck Taylor and Trent yet again, beating them down much to the distain of the RoH crowd. This bring out Orange Cassidy for an attempted save, but Cassidy is easily squashed by Elgin who plants him with an Elgin Bomb of his own before tossing him over to Jay Lethal to hit a Lethal Injection.
Elgin and Lethal clear the ring of Cassidy and the Best Friends before grabbing microphones to address the booing crowd and explain their actions. Lethal says that he came back to Ring of Honor because it’s truly felt like home to him, but this place is a lot different than he remembers. Elgin says there’s no honor or respect in this company anymore, which are they two things RoH was founded on. Gone are the days of handshakes before and after matches, we have men in masks constantly interfering in other people’s matches, and the original RoH superstars aren’t even being booked most nights. Lethal says that all changes after tonight! He explains that he went to see Elgin after their tournament losses and proposed they team up and enter the tag team tournament in order to gain the opportunity to teach these superstars the fundamentals that RoH was built on. Elgin says their team name is Unchained Honor, and they’re here to put the entire company on notice!
{We get a brief video recap of the events that led up to this next match.}
Match #2: Singles Match Joey Mercury (w/ Tall Masked Man) vs. Ken Kennedy
Mercury is out to the ring with only the tallest of the masked men, while Kennedy comes out with his own insurance policy in the form of a kendo stick! This match never really officially gets under way as Kennedy charges in to the ring going right after Mercury with the kendo stick, catching him with a couple solid shots to the back that causes Mercury to retreat to the outside of the ring! With Kennedy in hot pursuit, the taller masked man decides to intervene in the match, leveling Kennedy with a clothesline as he passes by in pursuit of Mercury. With Kennedy on the ground, Mercury and the masked man proceed to put the boots to him before rolling him in to the ring where Mercury nails Kennedy with a few kendo stick shots of his own. Mercury picks up Kennedy and tosses him in to the masked man who levels him with a big boot before picking him up and tossing him over to Joey Mercury who lays him out with a Double Arm DDT. Mercury places his foot on the chest of Kennedy and demands the referee count to 3, but the match was never officially started. Thanks to some “persuasion” from the taller masked man, the referee gets down and counts a mock 3-count declaring Joey Mercury the “winner” of this match.
Winner: No Contest
{We head backstage to Seth Rollins who is in his locker room getting ready for tonight’s Main Event Championship Match, when there is a knock at the door.}
In walks Seth’s opponent for tonight’s match, Kurt Angle, who is looking concerned. Angle brings Rollins’ attention to what just happened to Kennedy in the ring and Rollins voices his sympathies, though somewhat sarcastically. Angle brings up Joey Mercury and the two masked men who have interfered in almost every match since Rollins came to RoH, and questions if they would be showing up again tonight, to which Rollins says no. Seth places his hand on Angle’s shoulder before beginning to proclaim his respect and admiration for the Olympic Gold Medalist. Rollins then looks deep in to Angles’ eyes before promising him that if anyone tries to interfere in this match tonight, they’ll need to go through him first. Satisfied, Angle thanks Rollins for giving him his word and the two opponents wish each other luck as we head back to the ring for more PPV action.
Match #3: Singles Match Austin Aries (w/ Scarlett Bordeaux) vs. Brian Kendrick
Not much to build on here in terms of rivalry. Kendrick beat Aries in the first round of the RoH World Heavyweight Championship tournament, and Aries cost Kendrick his match in the Quarter Finals, so if this feud is to continue, a slow build like this could be just what is needed. Aries takes control of the match early, working over Kendrick and taking some time to show off to both the crowd, and to his girlfriend Scarlett Bordeaux much like in their first match. Kendrick does manages to get control of the action, and tries to catch an unsuspecting Aries with the Sliced Bread #2 which would have been a complete re-do of their first encounter, but Aries is able to sidestep it and regain momentum. The end of the match comes after Aries sets Kendrick up for the Brainbuster, but Kendrick manages to slide down behind Aries and lock him in a Bully Choke right in the middle of the ring!
Seeing Aries trapped, and wanting to save her boyfriend from tapping out, Scarlett charges in the ring and hits Kendrick with her shoe, forcing the referee to call the match and causing the RoH crowd who were enjoying this match to boo in disapproval.
Winner: Brian Kendrick by DQ @ 12:07.
Kendrick gets up after the bell and begins to walk towards Bordeaux, who slowly backs herself up in to a corner, trapping herself as Kendrick comes in looking to hit her, but instead he plants a big wet kiss on Scarlett’s lips as she tries desperately to squirm away, much to the approval of the crowd. Seeing this enrages Aries, who grabs Kendrick by the hair and pulls him off Scarlett, before to pummeling him with rights and lefts! Aries then grabs his girlfriend by the hand and leaves the ring with a furious look on his face. Kendrick sits up in the ring, licking his wounds with a smile on his face, while Scarlett who is trying as hard as possible to look disgusted, can’t help but crack a smile.
{We get another video highlight package. This one looking at Bobby Lashley’s reign of dominance in RoH before ultimately losing to Kurt Angle, and RVD’s tournament progress and subsequent loss to Seth Rollins as well.}
Match #4: Singles Match Rob Van Dam vs. Bobby Lashley Winner Receives a Future RoH World Heavyweight Championship Match
Both men come in to this match looking fired up, but it’s Bobby Lashley who continues his unstoppable run of dominance in this match, absolutely picking RVD apart for the majority of the contest. Lashley completely squashes Van Dam in what was expected to be a very competitive match, but end up being more of an opportunity to further but Lashley over in Ring of Honor. The end of this match finally comes after Lashley gets sick of toying with a defenseless RVD, and finishes him off with a Spear for the 3-count just under the 10-minute mark of this match. The commentary team wonder how short of a title reign tonight’s World Heavyweight Championship tournament winner is going to have if Bobby Lashley truly is the next man in line after tonight’s win.
Winner: Bobby Lashley by pinfall @9:53.
Lashley leaves the ring after a dominant performance, while the referee checks on RVD who is down and looks to be really hurt. The referee signals for help as two more officials come running down the ramp to assist in helping a dazed RVD up to his feet while the RoH crowd applauds his effort.
As the officials roll RVD out of the ring, and begin to help him up the entrance ramp, Elias comes out from behind the curtain, heading towards the ring for his match which is scheduled to take place next. Elias passes by RVD and laughs as he watches the referees assist him in leaving the ringside area, before suddenly stopping. Elias turns around and grabs Van Dam, tossing him in to the steel barricade as the referees try to intervene. Elias manages to push through the three much smaller refs, and pulls RVD back up to his feet before breaking his guitar over his head, and leaving RVD down on the entrance ramp. Elias backs away laughing to himself as boo’s reign down from the crowd. He then slowly heads back towards the ring, ready for his match.
Match #5: Singles Match Elias vs. Jeff Jarrett
Jarrett is out and not looking happy at what Elias did before the start of their match. Tazz comments on how Double J and RVD are acquaintances from their time together in various promotions and wonders if that attack was done deliberately by Elias to further get under the skin of his opponent. Double J and Elias exchange hard right hands in the middle of the ring once the bell rings causing the fans to get fired up right away! Elias takes control early after a knee to the stomach catches Jarrett off guard, allowing Elias to administer some offense of his own on the veteran Jarrett. Elias goes for the Drift Away early, but Jarrett counters in to a DDT that manages to score a 2-count from the referee and turns the slides slightly for Double J. After punishing Elias with some old school wrestling, Elias is back in control thanks to a thumb to the eye of Jeff Jarrett that was missed by the referee! Elias signals for the Drift Away on a temporarily blinded Jeff Jarrett, but Jeff manages to counter again in to a roll up, and grabs a hold of Elias’ tights, getting the 3-count and causing the crowd to go wild!
Winner: Jeff Jarrett by pinfall @ 7:07.
{We get a video recap of Eric Bischoff’s announcement for the RoH Tag Team Championship Tournament. The commentary team then remind the fans at home of Michael Elgin and Jay Lethal’s victory over the Best Friends at the beginning of the show, which has added them to the tournament as well. Steve Corino reminds Mauro Ranallo that the team of Elgin and Lethal are now going under the name Unchained Honor. Tazz comments that they might be his new favourite to win it all after their performance earlier tonight.}
Match #6: Triple Threat Tag Team Match Motor City Machine Guns vs. Sanity (w/ Eric Young) vs. All Night Express Winner Advances to the RoH Tag Team Tournament Finals
This very well could have been the match of the night! Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin have proven time and time again that they can work with just about anyone, and their styles matched perfectly with ANX’s Kenny King and Rhett Titus. Sanity, being the bigger and less agile of the three teams did a great job playing the powerhouse team that would work together to wear down their smaller and quicker opponents. Repeated interference by Sanity leader Eric Young had it looking like they’d walk out of this match victorious, until the referee manages to catch Young in the act and send him to the back, which turned the tides in this one. One notable moment of this match had ANX hit the Muff Diver on Chris Sabin, but Killian Dain quickly takes out both King and Titus, covering Sabin himself! Shelley though manages to break up the pin just before the referee’s 3-count, saving the match for his team!
Shortly after this, we have all 6-men in the ring brawling, as the referee struggles to maintain order in this match, Killian Dain takes out Kenny King with a flying Crossbody, before planting the Ulster Plantation on Rhett Titus.
A double dropkick to the back by the Motor City Machine Guns, sends Dain tumbling over the top rope where he appears to land awkwardly on the outside. Alexander Wolfe then rolls up Sabin from behind, but doesn’t notice that Alex Shelley was the legal man. After arguing with the referee as to why he didn’t count the pin on Sabin, Wolfe turns around in to the Shell Shock from Alex Shelley who covers him for the 3-count! Motor City Machine Guns are the first team to advance to the RoH Tag Team Championship Match!
Winners: MCMG by pinfall @ 20:14.
{We get a video recapping Kurt Angle and Seth Rollins’ paths to the tournament final followed by a Tale of the Tape comparing both superstars as the commentary teams make their pics for who they believe will walk out of this match as the first ever Ring of Honor World Heavyweight Champion.}
Main Event: Single Match Kurt Angle vs. Seth Rollins Ring of Honor World Heavyweight Championship
The crowd is electric for this one from bell to bell as two of the top superstars in the world today finally meet one-on-one for the right to be named Ring of Honor’s first World Heavyweight Champion. The match starts off slow with multiple tie ups, most of which won by Kurt Angle’s superior technical wrestling skill which allows him to start off the match with control as he wrestling Rollins to the mat with waist locks, legs sweeps and a German Suplex to get the crowd going early.
Rollins appears frustrated in the early goings of this match, but still determined not to be bested by Angle, refusing to stay down for long as Angle proves his wrestling superiority. Rollins does eventually gain control of the match, blocking Angle’s Belly-to-Belly attempt, and hitting Angle with a knee to the gut, freeing himself enough to step back and pull Angle in to the Revolution Knee!
Rollins quickly covers Angle, but only manages to get a 2 count, as Angle gets a shoulder up! Rollins then begins to work on Angle in the corner and in the center of the ring, trying hard to wear down the legs and back of the Olympic Gold Medalist. Needing a moment to catch his breath after a suplex, Angle takes a moment to roll out of the ring to regain his composure, but Rollins is hot on his trail, waiting for Angle to turn around before taking him out with a suicide dive!
The referee begins a 10 count, but Rollins is up and rolls Angle in to the ring before the referee can reach 8. Back in the ring, Rollins maintain his advantage in the match, working on Angle to try and wear him down enough to finish this bout off. After taking Angle down with a slingshot neckbreaker, Rollins heads to the corner signalling for The Stomp, but Angle manages to roll out at the last moment, getting behind Rollins and plating him with an Angle Slam!
Angle covers Rollins as the crowd counts to 3, but the referee doesn’t. Angle looks up to see the referee laying on the mat unconscious as an instant replay shows the fans watching at home, that Rollins’ foot accidentally caught the referee in the face when going down for the Angle Slam as the referee was standing just a little too close to the action. Disappointed, Angle rushes over to the referee to try and wake him up when Joey Mercury and the 2 masked men come running down the ramp and slide in to the ring attacking Angle! The masked men continue to lay the boots to Kurt Angle as the crowd boo’s heavily. Rollins slowly gets back to his feet and sees what is happening. He rushes over and grabs the smaller of the two masked men, tossing him aside before grabbing Joey Mercury and pulling him in to the corner, shouting at him to take the two masked men and get out of here! Seeing the commotion, the tallest of the masked men separates Rollins and Mercury as Rollins rushes over to help Kurt Angle back up to his feet. Angle stands slightly dazed beside his opponent Seth Rollins as the two men stand across the ring from Joey Mercury and his two masked allies. Just then, a fourth masked man rushes in to the ring from the crowd and stands beside Joey Mercury. Rollin and Angle look on slightly nervous, but notice a look of confusion on the face of Mercury as well. That confused look soon turns to a confident small as the masked men opens his arms to embrace Mercury much to the boos of the crowd. Mercury goes to hug this fourth masked man, only to find himself getting Mic Checked by the masked man who quickly rips off his mask to reveal himself as Ken Kennedy!
Kennedy rolls out of the ring after Mercury as the crowd roars in approval. Mercury tries to retreat through the crowd, but Kennedy is hot on his tail as he follows him, leaving Rollins and Angle in the ring now with only the two masked men. On cue, Rollins and Angle rush the two men, but the smaller masked man jumps out of the ring, leaving the larger one to fend for himself as Angle and Rollins rush him in to the corner where Angle begins to unload with rights and left, but Rollins stops, keeping his eye on the other masked man who is now on the outside of the ring. The larger masked man pushes Angle back, sending him staggering in to Rollins and then catches the oncoming Angle with a Big Boot! With Angle down momentarily, the taller man turns his attention to Seth Rollins. Instead of attacking Rollins though, the man leans back in the corner as the smaller man has now joined him, perched on the top rope. After exchanging words with the smaller masked man, the larger man slowly pulls off his mask to reveal himself as none other than Luke Harper!
Angle is back up, seeing Luke Harper standing in front of him, he charges at Harper, but Luke Harper ducks under Angle’s arms and catches him on the rebound with a Discuss Lariat, knocking him right back down to the mat as the crowd continues to boo heavily.
Rollins stands in the ring in shock, staring at Luke Harper who stands perfectly still in front of him. The final masked man who is still perched on the top rope reaches over to his side, the grabs a pouch. He then hands the pouch to Luke Harper who slowly offers it to Seth Rollins. Rollins nervously grabs the pouch and reaches inside, pulling out a railroad spike. Shocked, Rollins looks back up at the man on the ropes and gasps as he pulls off his mask as well, revealing himself to be Jimmy Jacobs!
Rollins’ look of shock soon turns to an evil smirk as Harper and Jacobs begins to laugh. On the command of Jacobs, Harper pulls the dazed Kurt Angle back up to his feet and faces him towards Rollins. Confused, Angle asks Rollins what’s going on, only for Rollins to nail Angle in the forehead with that railroad spike much to the joy of Harper and Jacobs. Rollins then sets up in the corner, delivering a Stomp to Kurt Angle before covering him as Harper pulls the referee over to the action and forces him to the count to 3!
Winner & NEEEEWWWWW RoH World Heavyweight Champion: Seth Rollins by pinfall @ 28:51.
Rollins celebrates his Ring of Honor World Heavyweight Championship victory with his old friends Jimmy Jacobs and Luke Harper as the fan voice the disapproval of the events that just unfolded in the ring. The commentators wonder what just happened as Steve Corino begins to teach Ranallo and Tazz the history of Age of the Fall, commenting that he believes after 11 years, it looks like they are officially back together in Ring of Honor. The PPV slowly fades to a close as Age of the Fall stand in the center of the ring with Seth Rollins as your new Ring of Honor World Heavyweight Champion.

I have loved the way you've used Brian Kendrick, as I am a big fan of him and you do him a lot of justice. Fantastic main event and very well written. There was a lot of twists, turns and drama, it was one hell of a dream match. I thought Angle's debut with ROH was the moment of the year in 2019 and you really haven't disappointed with his usage.

Best in the World was a good first supercard event for Ring of Honor. It had plenty of solid matches on the card and some good surprises. I like the idea of putting Jay Lethal and Michael Elgin together as a team. Their pairing and appearance on the card was a welcomed surprise. Aries vs. Kendrick and RVD vs. Lashley were strong singles matches. The Elias vs. Jeff Jarrett feud is pretty fun and I liked that match for what it was. My favourite match of the night was the triple threat tag team bout. I also like that the Motor City Machine Guns won the match and have moved on to the finals.
I wanted to love Kurt Angle vs. Seth Rollins, but I didn't. I get what you were going for and I think the angle was a great way to establish a big heel faction. On the other hand, I was hoping for a clean contest with a clear, honorable victor. But if Rollins is going to be the champ, I'm glad he became the champ as a heel. I've never thought much of him as a face. He's a strong heel character - a guy you love to hate. Placing him in that role will do you wonders in the weeks and months ahead.

The amount of work and time you put into the visual presentation of your stuff makes me jealous. I just don't have the skills.
As for this actual event, bravo. I like the number of "real" ROH alumni you have on your roster, for starters. It gives your card a "dream match" feel. I didn't follow ROH back in the Age of the Fall days, but I'm looking forward to your take on it, even though I have a hard time buying Jacobs as a credible, physical threat. I second the notion of Lethal and Elgin as as a team (I'm a big fan of makeshift teams), and he rest of the card was more than solid. Keep up the good work.

What a show Cauchi I loved every second of it!!!
Ive said it before I think Rollins is a much better heel so him going full heel here tonight was a great thing to see and becoming the first ROH Champion was even better!!! I love the faction and I can't wait too see what comes next!!!

I know I read the show before but I wanted to read it again and leave some comments on here.First, to echo with Fifthhorseman said, the visuals are outstanding. The card and the results just look fantastic and really bring these stories to life. I'm a big Harper mark, so I love what you did here with him and it just makes sense. So far, it seems like everyone in ROH is being utilized pretty well. Also compliments to the length of the matches, every match length made perfect sense for the position on the card/amount of build for the story. Can't wait to see more.
