Joey Styles: Hello everybody – this is AWA Wednesday Night Warriors! We are live from the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and for the next two hours, you will witness the greatest wrestling action on the planet, courtesy of the American Wrestling Association! We have six, count ‘em, six matches on tap tonight, including an AWA Tag-Team title defense by the Miracle Violence Connection – “Dr. Death” Steve Williams and Terry “Bamm Bamm” Gordy – against the sneaky-fast Dudebusters in a true David vs. Goliath contest! But that’s not the only championship match on the card – here to tell you about it, as well as the other outstanding battles on the card, is the one and only Josh Mathews. Take it away, partner!
Josh Mathews: Thank you Joey and greetings to AWA fans far and wide! As mentioned, the AWA Television title is, as always, on the line tonight as the dominant Great Muta takes on a man who held the NWA TV title for almost two years, Tully Blanchard. Diamond Dallas Page battles one of the Gaijin Invasion’s heavy hitters, Mike Awesome! AWA newcomer Barry Windham squares off against Ethan Carter III! In tag-team action, the Varsity Club tackles the World’s Greatest Tag Team in what is sure to be a fantastic scientific affair, and to kick things off tonight, well, let’s go to the ring with Christy Hemme!
VS.
Kazuchika Okada vs. AJ Styles: This was an electrifying opener. Both men wrestled as if they were attract the attention of the AWA championship committee; Okada and Styles went to the air early and often, showing off two of the best dropkicks in the business. The IWGP stalwart took over, though, and alternated a series of strikes with choke-like submissions to wear Styles down. However, Styles rallied to his feet and went airborne again, connecting with his Superman springboard forearm and a Pele kick, before finally finishing Okada off twelve minutes in.
VS.
The Varsity Club vs. the World’s Greatest Tag Team: If you like scientific wrestling, this was your match of the night. All four were vaunted collegiate wrestlers, and at the onset, it seemed like each team wanted to prove to the other that they could win an amateur-styled match. It was very stiff, and ground-based, with all four combatants sticking to a (surprisingly) clean style. However, as the match wore on, the punches and kicks flew as often as the suplexes, and it turned into a four-man brawl. At the end, Swagger put Haas in his ankle lock, but Benjamin superkicked his foe in the back of the head while the referee put Rotunda out. Haas scored the pin seconds later.
VS.
Tully Blanchard (w/JJ Dillon) vs. the Great Muta [C](w/Gary Hart): Before the match even started, Dillon and Hart jawed at each other so much (due to their confrontation last week between Edge and Vader) that the referee sent them both back. Blanchard took advantage of the chaos, and laid the boots to Muta early. He kept the Japanese champ on the mat, targeting his lower back whenever possible. But he could not keep him down forever, and Muta fought back with kicks and chops of his own. He set the Texan for the moonsault, but Blanchard rolled outside – so the TV titlist hit a crossbody to the floor. They continued to brawl outside until the referee counted both men out.
A 60-second recap of last week's television show was presented, as well as "highlights" from the classic AWA Team Challenge Series.
VS.
Ethan Carter III vs. Barry Windham: Carter entered first, and grabbed the microphone out of Hemme’s hand, running down Windham as the “product of a different millennium.” Needless to say, Windham was not impressed, and the fight was on. The tall Texan controlled the bout early, using his strength and leverage advantage with punches, clotheslines, and bone-rattling suplexes. Carter, however, demonstrated his resilience, and took over on Windham for several minutes, scoring several near-falls. In the end, Windham reserved the advantage once more, and hit a brutal lariat for the win.
VS.
The Dudebusters vs. the Miracle Violence Connection [C]: To their credit, the Dudebusters exuded confidence on their way to the ring. They also used their superior speed to both stay out of harm’s way and land several double-team maneuvers. Unfortunately, once Gordy was able to catch Croft a few minutes in, the end was near. He and Williams isolated him from his partner Barreta, and after a series of tags, “Bamm Bamm” finished Croft with a powerbomb.
After the match ended, “Dr. Death” asked for a microphone.
The Team Challenge Series is coming up in a couple of weeks. And me and Bamm Bamm, we’ve kinda noticed that the tag-team division here in the AWA has gotten a whole lot tougher lately. But you know what? We’re the toughest team here! And we’ll prove it – with a team challenge of our own! This is an open challenge to every team in the whole AWA. Sure, we could beat you all, one at a time, but that’d take too long! How about you all show up at the next big show, and me and Terry, we’ll take you all on in a gauntlet match! If you got the guts – show up!
VS.
Mike Awesome (w/Gary Hart) vs. Diamond Dallas Page (w/Kimberly): Your main event of the evening, television time remaining. Both men were on a roll coming in, and they exchanged punches from the opening bell. Awesome took over on the exchange, overpowering DDP with heavy rights. For the next several minutes, it was all Awesome, who used high-impact moves both inside and outside the ring. But the “People’s Champ” gutted out every pin attempt, and fought back every time he landed on his back. He gradually took control, and connected on the former ECW champion with slams and leg-sweeps. The endgame occurred with Page hitting a “Cactus Jack clothesline”, taking both men outside in a heap. When he rolled back inside, Awesome got to the apron and hit him with a headbutt, momentarily dazing both men. Awesome then went for a rope-aided shouldertackle from the outside, but DDP caught him with his patented “Diamond Cutter” for the three-count. He celebrated with Kimberly on the ramp as the show ended.
