"Welcome to ECW!"
Tony Schiavone opens up the show in the usual way, following the brand new intro featuring clips from last week's show. Schiavone goes over the upcoming matches tonight and what happened last week with Joel Gertner putting his input in and making some jokes as Schiavone continues on. Schiavone then also mentions Paul Heyman's announcement last week which means the main event will be the fatal four way to see who is facing Joey Janela for the ECW World Championship at ECW Heatwave!
Myron Reed vs. Brian Pillman Jr
For this match, Pillman's adversaries Teddy Hart and Davey Boy Smith Jr were banned from this match, so this was a true test to see how the second generation star could fare on his own. Going up against a very fast paced and high aerial wrestler in Myron Reed, Pillman definitely struggled, but as soon as he slowed the match down and got some of his own moves in, it was a world of pain for Reed. After countering a superkick by Pillman, Reed hit Pillman with a superkick of his own. Reed went for a 450 splash, but suddenly, Brian Pillman (not Jr) nailed Reed from behind with a crutch! Boos rained down from the fans, as Pillman Jr got up and looked to his father, then grabbed him up and hit a brutal Death Valley Driver for three.
After the match is over, we are treated with an interview between Tony Schiavone and Joey Janela, taped earlier in the day. Schiavone asks Janela about the challenge laid down on him by Baron Corbin, calling him a mindless spot-monkey who he says didn't earn that ECW World Title shot and would easily beat him in seconds. Janela responds to Schiavone who quotes Corbin's challenge and says he can go up to Baron Corbin face to face to beat him, in fact he'll go to the Creator of Violence, Paul Heyman himself for a match with Corbin and will even put his title shot at Heatwave on the line.
Hart Foundation (Teddy Hart and Davey Boy Smith Jr) vs. Too Cool (Scotty 2 Hotty and Grand Master Sexay) w/ Rikishi
Commentary put over the fact hard that the winner of this match goes on to face The Rascalz who won a tag match last week to crown inaugural ECW Tag Team Champions at Heatwave, and both are trying to prove their worth by gaining a win here tonight. The Hart Foundation wrestle this match with some well-needed momentum picked off of their stablemate Brian Pillman Jr who won in the opening match of the evening. As soon as Hart Foundation gained control over this match, it looked like they would never let go. Rest holds and technical submissions by DBS Jr wore down Grand Master Sexay, and then DBS gave the tag in to Teddy Hart to finish him off. After Davey Boy distracted the ref so Teddy Hart was allowed to nail Grand Master Sexay with some brass knuckles towards his sudden burst of momentum, Rikishi entered the ring and superkicked Hart into the corner! When Scotty 2 Hotty went over to Davey and a brawl started outside the ring, leaving for the ref to go out there and try and stop this madness, Rikishi caught Teddy Hart with his Stinkface to a pretty vocal crowd! The celebration between Rikishi and Grand Master Sexay ended very shortly, as the duo of Brian Pillman Jr and Brian Pillman Sr entered the ring, nailing both men with kendo sticks. The two threw Rikishi out and left the ring, allowing for Davey Boy Smith Jr to roll back in after having taken out Scotty 2 Hotty with the referee, and picked up Grand Master Sexay so Hart was able to hit him with the Hart Attack, for three. With this win, it will now be The Hart Foundation vs The Rascalz for the ECW World Tag Team Championships at ECW Heatwave.
Joey Janela vs. Baron Corbin
Before Janela can finish taking off his shades and his jacket, Corbin starts the match off strong with a chair straight to the gut. As soon as Janela topples over, Corbin uses the advantage to repeatedly beat him over the back with the chair, but decides it isn't enough, forcefully ripping Janela's jacket off and then continuing to beat him with the chair. For the rest of the match, Corbin is in firm control, using weapons and what ever around the ring to his disposal. When Corbin goes for a chokeslam through the table, Janela fights back, and ducks a clothesline attempt into a bat straight into the gut. Janela hits Corbin over the back with the bat. From that point on, it was even game for either men. A near fall after a brutal Deep Six onto a seated chair had Corbin angered, so he went for the End of Days for the win, but Janela flipped out of it. Janela, taking a page from Corbin's book spat straight in his face, then went down for a kick straight to the groin. Janela stepped out the ring, chanting along his taunt to the fans, and then finally finishing Corbin off with a nicely executed Elbow Drop for three. Janela keeps his ECW World title shot at Heatwave!
But wait! Before Janela can celebrate much further, Baron Corbin is already up to his feet, attacking Janela from behind. Corbin lays out Janela with multiple punches, and then picks him up. Corbin shoves Janela into the ropes, and hits him with a brutal End of Days! But here comes Paul Heyman! Heyman tells Corbin that since he respects his hustle, but unfortunately, he just choked out and couldn't get the win. Heyman says that he'll get a second chance to prove himself here, and that will be at Heatwave, up against the Knockout Artist of ECW, Chris Hero! Corbin nods to Heyman, mouthing off some stuff about Hero that isn't audible to the camera, but Hero jumps the cade and enters the ring! Corbin turns around---BOOM! ROLLING ELBOW! Corbin is knocked out cold! Hero throws his elbow over the ropes, posing for the fans as the fans cheer him on and Heyman watches on in approval.
Jimmy Havoc vs. Sabu (1999) vs. Hayabusa (1998) vs. Jerry Lynn (1999)
This was an absolute car-crash of a match. Each men in the match complimented each other in different ways, and weapons were thrown at each other throughout the whole match. Jimmy Havoc was definitely outmatched as the match continued, considering he was going up against the best wrestlers to ever grace an ECW ring. This didn't stop Havoc, as he's definitely has some experience in hardcore matches like this as well. This match made the fatal four way last week very tame, as light tubes, gusset plates, scissor boards, among other stuff was introduced in the match, getting to the point some moments were briefly censored by ECW's broadcasting network. In the end, a huge sequence ran, with Havoc going for an Acid Rainmaker to Hayabusa, only to be caught with a brutal chair shot to the head by Sabu, followed by Hayabusa hitting Sabu with his signature Falcon Arrow, but in the end it was Jerry Lynn who snuck in and threw Hayabusa over the ropes, leading for him to land through a table already set up by Lynn. Lynn picked up Sabu, and nailed him with his Signature Cradle Piledriver to take the win and now go on to Heatwave.
When the match is all said and done, Lynn does a title motion around his waist, signifying he will be the one to reign supreme over Joey Janela and become the first ever ECW World Champion. As Lynn celebrates our victory, Tony Schiavone and Joel Gertner send us off for the go home show of the first ECW PPV: Heatwave.
