Joey Styles: Hello wrestling fans around the world – you are watching AWA Throwdown! We are live from Des Moines, Iowa, and we are just a few short days away from the American Wrestling Association’s first pay-per-view of 2014 – SuperClash 2.1! We will be crowning a new AWA Heavyweight Champion in a bonafide David vs. Goliath matchup, as the former WWE and ROH champ Daniel Bryan clashes with the massive former WCW champ, Big Van Vader!
But that’s later, and this is live television on your screen tonight! The AWA Tag-Team champions will be in action tonight - the BlueBloods, Doug Williams and William Regal, defend their belts against FlexForce, Chris Masters and Paul Orndorff! Also tonight, the newest member of the AWA, Scott Hall, steps in the ring with Edge! And that’s not all! I’m going to turn it over to my partner in crime, the only color man Tough Enough for the American Wrestling Association, Josh Mathews, and he’ll run down the rest of the card!
Josh Mathews: Thank you Joey, and thank you fans for letting us into your living rooms tonight. We hope you’re having a great holiday season. Also in action tonight, the cunning Nigel McGuinness squares off against the solo and resurgent Ricky Morton. The living legend, Harley Race, battles one half of the Samoan Strike Team, Haku! In another tag-team contest, the Natural Born Thrillers duo of Sean O’Haire and Mark Jindrak meet the Varsity Club, Syracuse’s Mike Rotunda and Oklahoma’s Jack Swagger! Adam Cole versus Jushin "Thunder" Liger!" And finally, the contract signing – Big Van Vader and Daniel Bryan meet in the middle of the ring.
VS.
The Natural Born Thrillers (Mark Jindrak and Sean O'Haire w/JJ Dillon) vs. the Varsity Club (Jack Swagger and Mike Rotunda): A very fast-paced tag match to start the night. Crowd loyalties were split down the middle. The advantage switched several times - the NBT using their raw power to counter the Club's mat wrestling - and it was ultimately power that decided the contest. The end came when O'Haire hit a high senton on Rotunda for the clean pin.
VS.
Adam Cole vs. Jushin Liger: These men wrestled at an even faster pace, and the action spilled outside the ring on several occasions. Liger used his agility to offset the slight strength advantage that Cole possessed, but was unable to score the quick pin, despotie numerous attempts. Cole fought back with strikes, and eventually took the match to the ground for several minutes. Light fought back, and hit two top-rope dropkicks to stagger Cole, but missed a shooting star press. Cole rolled Liger up with a small package for the upset (?) win.
VS.
Haku (w/Samu) vs. Harley Race:: The high-risk, airborne maneuvers were kept to a minimum when these legendary tough guys squared off. Obviously respectful of each other, they nonetheless pummeled each other with forearms, headbutts, and knees. When it went to the mat, both men tried to weaken the other man's legs, and it then began a battle to see who could literally stay on one's feet. Both men wound up cut in the hard-fought contest; in the end, Race scored the pin with a fisherman's suplex.
VS.
Nigel McGuinness (w/Layla) vs. Ricky Morton: The pace picked up in this contest, despite the contrast in styles; McGuinness was methodical, looking for limbs to disable, while Morton tried to employ basic but quick moves against his slightly larger foe. Armdrags and drop-toeholds frustrated the Englander, and he went outside often to vent his grievances. At the end of the eight-minute match, Morton hit a high cross-body, but McGuinness rolled through and submitted his opponent with a top wrist-lock.
VS.
The BlueBloods (William Regal and Doug Williams, w/Layla) vs. FlexForce (Paul Orndorff and Chris Masters), for the AWA Tag-Team titles: Despite the pedigree of the BlueBloods, the first few minutes of the match were all Paul Orndorff. "Mr. Wonderful" overpowered and even outwrestled both of his foes, who were unable to put him down. Unfortunately, Masters was unable to sustain the advantage, and the champs took over, both trying to weaken his left forearm. However, he eventually made the tag to his partner, and Orndorff cleared house. All four men wound up in the ring, and Regal clipped Masters' knee before he and Orndorff wound up outside. Williams hit Masters with his "Chaos Theory" suplex for the victory.
VS.
Edge (w/JJ Dillon) vs. Scott Hall: Before the match started, Hall grabbed a microphone and explained to the crowd (regarding his actions the night before) that if anybody deserved to fight for an Intercontinental championship in a ladder match, it was him, and he wanted a shot at that title. Despite the weight disadvantage, Edge matched Hall punch for punch and kick for kick. The tide turned several times, with neither man willing to lose in such an important match. The endgame came when Hall lifted Edge for the "Razor's Edge" - Dillon jumped onto the ring apron, distracting the referee. Edge slid down Hall's back and connected with a brutal low blow, flooring Hall. However, he could not keep the big man down, and Hall kicked out at the 2.9 count. Edge set up Hall for the spear... and missed! As he turned, Hall dropped to one knee and low-blowed Edge in full sight of the official, who DQed him. As the "Rated-R Superstar" writhed on the mat, Hall stood over him and, smiling, shouted, "Who's the bad guy now?"
Daniel Bryan - Big Van Vader contract signing: Imagine the seriousness of a UFC weigh-in without the typical shenanigans of a professional wrestling contract signing. Lance Russell "moderated" the brief speaking segment during the signing, noting that while both men were extraordinary wrestlers and competitors, Vader has been beaten in the past by smaller men than himself, while Bryan had never faced a man who combined the mass and agility of the former WCW champion. Both men signed, Gary Hart sneered, and neither man laid a finger on the other... if you want to see that, you have to order the pay-per-view!
